Looks like the Dawgs have a quarterback walking on for next season.
A three-star member of the Wolf Pack’s 2019 recruiting class, Kirksey was rated as the No. 59 pro-style quarterback in the country and the No. 170 player at any position in the state of Georgia.
Roster management, for the win.
I’m betting there will be others as well in the portal soon enough looking for a place to compete for a NC

How’d we miss out on him? Not offering a scholarship? Or did he want to play immediately?
I like watching him. He’s exciting, and he can change a game one way or another pretty quickly, but at the same time, I’m glad we’re not dealing with his growing pains.

Yeah, I believe that is what it was. They wanted to blue shirt him, red shirt, grey shirt or whatever the heck that call it these days.
I think they wanted him to pay his way the first year and wait for a scholly to open up the next. The kid made a smart decision and went to Ole Miss imo.
Thinks that is one decision we will regret.

He wanted to play baseball this past spring in High School. Was a deal breaker for Kirby, Kirby wanted him to enroll at UGA early, we needed the arms for spring ball..Kirby offered to bring him in later, probably knowing the kid wouldn’t accept that offer..thus both moved on…..I still think the kids future in in baseball…
After all that, enter The Mailman.

He loved Ga. But Kirby wanted him to blue shirt, so at the last minute he decided on Miss for a full ride. Kirby blew that one big time!!!

I’ve already asked this, but maybe you can explain to me how a kid with Plumlee’s passing stats fits in with Georgia’s offense.
LikeLike
Believe he ran more than he passed that LSU game.
LikeLike
That’s kind of the point. He’s a great runner and a bad passer. That doesn’t fall in line with Georgia’s offense.
LikeLike
Who cares…maybe when he ain’t hitting 60% of his passes he can run for 200 like he did against LSU. Kid seems to be like a Johnny M. with his head on straight to me. Seems very mature and grounded for his age to me.
More than likely you won’t be able to stack the box on the O’ like teams are doing now. Will also keep the backers guessing, whether to drop (pass), or play the run. Gonna keep them guessing, opens things up.
Only a freshman, he gets better imo.

Manziel threw for 3,700 and 4,100 yards with passer ratings of 155.3 and 172.9. That comparison, aside, what about the staff’s decisions makes you think they’d put a guy out there to run 20 times a game at QB?

In a career, yes (Manziel)….what I’ve seen, he reminds me of him. Turn on your set and watch. Don’t just look at the stats. Still very early for Plumlee, but he definitely reminds me of him (athletically).
What makes me think they would allow him to run???…..common sense. He has the legs, looks to me like the defense would have to respect the arm & the legs.
They sure let Fields run it. What makes you think they wouldn’t allow Plumlee run it??

Manziel was a redshirt freshman and sophomore. The passing stats I listed were his two years of play. I’ve watched Plumlee. He can’t throw with any kind of consistency. He’s a phenomenal runner. Maybe he’ll develop as a passer and maybe he won’t. RichRod (assuming he’s still there next year) has never shown any ability to turn a runner into an all-around QB before, and I doubt he’ll start now.

Agree with all of that. He’s ridiculously fast. His passing will improve and he’s going to be something.
I think he wanted to play baseball too or something like that. I never felt enough was done to sign him after his verbal commitment to the G. but then, I have no idea of what all was really involved.
It is what it is. I hope he’s beating AU and Bama by his third year.
If JF doesn’t return things will be dicey at QB ..but you have to believe Kirby’s on the mother.
He is isn’t he?
We should get to see a lot of Stetson and the other backups in a couple of weeks at CMR field at NATS.

But you know who does??? Matt Corral.

I didn’t like what I saw out of Corral, but if Smart were to get him as a transfer, it’d be worth a shot. I’m honestly not that concerned about QB even if Fromm leaves, provided Mathis can actually come back. He and Beck both have potential, and Bennett starting one year or part of one year wouldn’t be the end of the world I think.

Greg, OM runs RichRod’s offense. It’s a good scheme for Plumlee. Standard pro set stuff, not so much.

I get it, but you are allowed to run it in a pro set. The last I looked, Bama runs a pro-styled offense.

And Tua throws the ball much better than does Plumlee.
I watched a chunk of the OM-LSU game. Georgia doesn’t run anything similar to what RR calls.

Tua also has a better cast of players around him. Not saying the Plumlee would be a superstar or even a starter at UGA, but we certainly could use him…..that’s all. He is definitely a scholarship player, a player we lost that I believe we will regret…if not already.

Fields was a freshman with only 2 years experience as a starter at the HS level. He was not ready.
Another year at the college level has made him a better player imo…..and good for him.
You can’t compare the two…

He sure did get ready quick then. Left us in January and by August was fully baked. Either we can’t develop them as well as Ohio State can in quick order or our offense isn’t set up to take advantage of that type of talent. Either one is a major issue long term.

I kinda wonder if that was a result of Fields ‘buying in’ to Day and OSU. Don’t think that ever happened in Athens once fall ball rolled around he realized he was #2 on the depth chart. And I’d also agree that Greg makes a good point. You say 1 year shouldn’t make that big of a difference, but when it’s 25% of your career as a starter, one could argue at some point you make the jump.

Just from a “trolling Barners” standpoint, I’d laugh and laugh if Gatewood transferred here.

Looks like he played with Blaylock at Walton. Good for Kirby building depth but I’m thinking Jakes coming back. And We just have no idea if Mathis will ever be able to play. I agree with you on Plumlee…fun to watch but he’d be put in Fields type situations at UGA….and probably do better.

Probably do better based on what? Because you like him and you hate Fields?

You posted this two days ago Dawgman3000.
“Well it would help them if they had a qb who could throw them open occasionally. Better yet, how about the guru defense reader throw to the open guy rather than the guy with a db draped all over him. Love how some here want to place all of the offensive woes on anyone but the qb, while attributing any success the offense has strictly to the same qb.”
We all know you have a nut-up, knee jerk reaction to any comment about Fields. It’s as predictable as the sun coming up in the morning.
You just accused Mark of hating the kid because he said Plumlee would probably do better.
By your own standard (that negative critique of a QB equals hatred) you yourself apparently hate Jake Fromm. (Just applying your standard.)
The fact is Fields left Georgia in a deceitful and ugly way. People resent that. If someone doesn’t wish him well, that’s probably the reason.
Fromm beat out Fields. You resent him for that..Admit it if you’re honest. Just admit it. That’s it. And quit seeing racism in every single mention of Fields. It’s unfounded. Eason is white and Fromm beat him out too. It happens.
LikeLike
I like Fromm, although I don’t think he’s all world like his fanboys make him out to be. It’s actually SOME of his fanboys I have the problem with. I guess you missed when I said that Landers & Simmons should be benched for the remainder of the season. Am I a racist for criticizing them? That doesn’t fit your narrative though right?
You see, I understand I’m the bad guy here because I call it how I see it from my perspective. Black qb’s are consistently marginalized and underestimated, basically the way people of color are in general. Im glad you mentioned Eason because he ran the spread in HS and struggled running the offense at UGA at times. I never seen anyone say that he couldn’t read defenses, but yet that was the claim when it came to Fields. What’s that all about?
I’ll close with this. Fields is gone, that’s water under the bridge. You want to talk about the way he left? How about explaining why there was more sympathy for baseball player than there was for Fields who was called a racial slur? Did Fields use it to his benefit? Yes he did. If the baseball kid didn’t say what he said, then Fields isn’t playing this season. Simple as that. I watched Deshaun Watson destroy Kirby’s defense while he at Bama for a title. It’s been said that he was told he wasn’t good enough to play qb in Athens. $cam Newton carried the Barn to a title but was told to come in and play TE at UGA. DJ Shockley was the last qb to lead UGA to a SEC title before 2017, but is rarely mentioned when talking about great UGA qbs and he did it the right way. Three SEC teams have won championships with black qb’s, with 2 of them being from the state of Georgia. So yeah, I do wonder why it appears that UGA and black qb’s aren’t compatible? Now you answer that “honestly.”

Totally nutso but that is probably the way you see most things in the world. Your problem, and frankly most others in this crazy country. In this particular case it is a style thing, not a skin color thing with the QBs you mentioned, although Watson seems an error to me by Bobo and Richt.
Fields simply wasn’t ready to run this offense as a freshman, not because of his skin, because of the lack of exposure/reps in HS. This is a much disciplined offense than what he was accustomed. I am sure he would have been very successful here but not last year for sure, and probably not this year. He didn’t want to wait, and saw the clear difference at practice, as did others. He left, fine, wish he had never come because he was a distraction. Whomever advised him mislead him, he seriously thought he would win the job the last year, that is what amazes me.
UGA has had multiple black QBs before, Shockley is one of my all-time favorites for many reasons, including his skills as a QB. Sucks that his time overlapped an established QB, David Green (who wasn’t, but color seems to be your hang up). I don’t recall any being treated differently from other white, or black athletes. Get over your hangup, because it is your issue, not the program’s, or of any sizable number of UGA fans I have ever encountered. How many back athletes are beloved at UGA versus whites?
This QB doesn’t seem to be a great fit either as a QB for our present offense. Looks like a better candidate for punt returner or receiver. But maybe he could get more accomplished as a passer.

Plumlee is also a baseball star and that was his attraction to UGA. I guess true dedication to one sport is the thing now. Travel ball and all. Wonder if Bo played travel ball. It’s really a wonder that kids like Herschel and Bo do two sports. Such were the times when individuals were not making a boatload of cash from kids from the 5th grade through their Senior year

Yep, it takes a special person to be able to do so. Deion was another. I can remember in the HS days that if you played a skilled position in football, they wanted you to run track. Times have changed.

I May be wrong but I don’t see Plumlee running for multi 60 yd TD runs anymore. Now, coaches have tape on the guy and that will now be put in their gameplan against the black bear rebels. However the guy has a ton of raw talent. Reminds me of the awesome run that Vick had against the Vikings… but I don’t recall another run like that happening for the dog whisperer again in the League.

What does our QB room look like for 2020?
Jake Fromm* (SR) draft eligible, may go top 20
Stetson Bennett (SR) 3* transfer
D’wan Mathis (RFr) 4* pro style flipped from tOSU
Nathan Priestley (RFr) 2* pro style walk on – missed his sr year hs so under-recruited?
Carson Beck (FR) 4* pro style
Austin Kirksey (RFr) 3* pro style transfer walk-on
Other than the scout teamers, did I miss someone?

I’m thinking Fromm comes back, Bennett continues backing him up, Mathis medically retires, Beck/Kirksey come in and start learning the ropes.
Unless Kirby gets one of the available transfer portal QBs as well. He is usually on the mother when it comes to the portal.

I don’t see Fromm leaving for the NFL unless he decides there isn’t anything he can improve and with Tua possibly out he moves up one spot. That should set up good situation where Beck can redshirt his Freshman year.

What are the chances that are woes on offense are actually due to Kirby tanking Fromm’s numbers in order to get him back in 2020? With Mathis a weak maybe at best and Beck a crap shoot, having Jake back looks worth going after a highly risky four dimensional chess move. That’d explain a lot – low percentage passes, ignoring the middle of the field, limited play action, etc. At least moreso than the, ‘our WRs can’t get open and thus the whole offense sucks’, explanation. And with that, the Reynolds Wrap goes back in the drawer.

Reading the tea leaves, I doubt Mathis ever plays again. At this point, I doubt Fromm leaves. If he does leave, it’s cause our offense goes on a run here over the last leg of the season, which would be beautiful (doubtful).

Why doesn’t anyone think that Mathis or Beck is capable of taking the reins? Looks like a couple of competent dark horses are available as well to either compete and take the job or to hone the athleticism of the QB that wins out.
This contrived dependency on Fromme is ridiculous. There will be other QBs available for 2021,22, etc. that we are not yet aware could impress. It is too early to speculate on Fromme. Let’s enjoy him while he is here and give him our appreciation of the fine and historical significance he has and has had for UGA.
