He’s a carnival barker and, frankly, I think that’s an insult to carnival barkers.

I listen to his show sometimes just to get some laughs and my favorite call by far is when a caller asks him to analyze an upcoming game or give his prediction, as if he has actual football knowledge. Finebaum always mumbles a few words and really says nothing of substance, then shuffles the caller off. It’s comical that anyone thinks he has a shred of football knowledge. His specialty is being an observer of the “spectacle” of college football – he really doesn’t understand what he’s watching on the field, but he has an opinion about everything the coaches, players, etc. are doing off the field.

When he claimed to have football knowledge? He gets ratings, or he wouldn’t be on the air…period.

Many of the callers are set ups…it is just entertainment…or not.

Mullens’s defense of Utah was kind of eye rolling. They lost to USC, who had to play their 3rd string QB in that game, largely because they just couldn’t cover USC’s 3 receivers. Mullens basically said the loss didn’t count because Utah’s “elite” back Zach Moss got injured in the game. Apparently not even making the Top 40 in yards per carry makes you “elite.”

So, USC is ranked solely because they beat Utah, and Utah is ranked so high because that loss has an asterisk.

    Ok.

Don’t make too big of a deal out of a team losing to a team playing its third string qb. Glass houses and all, you know?

Yeah, I was about to say it wasn’t USC playing their 3rd string QB, it was Kentucky. But then I realized he wasn’t talking about our bad loss.

SC was playing their third string qb after Hilinski went down. We lost to a bad SC team playing its third string qb.

SC had lots of players going out in that game. If you would have told me that they would lose their QB and all those other players, I would have expected a blowout!

      • You do realize that 3rd string QB didn’t do anything against our defense? The 2nd string/starter made one play the entire game. Anyone who wants to blame the South Carolina game on our defense is blaming the wrong side of the ball.

Yeah, it’s not like our defense gave up 12 yards per pass on 32 attempts. Can you imagine what LSU, Clemson or Ohio State is going to do to them in the playoffs?

Because Oregon’s Cristobal, with a first round QB, is going to run right at them over and over, which is exactly what they want.

Utah is plenty good. I think they could very well beat Oregon in the title game. As others have said, they lost to USCw, but the Trojans are light years better than USCe and the Utes lost on the road, not at home. Frankly, other than Bama being rated too high, hardly have much of an issue with the Top Ten.

If they lack the athleticism to handle the Trojan passing game being run by a 3rd stringer, then there is no way on God’s green earth they can stay on the field with Ohio State, Clemson, LSU or even a Tua-less Alabama.

Utah didn’t derp that game away. They won the turnover battle. They just allowed a 3rd string QB to rack up 12 yards per pass on 32 attempts.

And no matter what you think of Utah, Mullen’s understanding of that game means he didn’t watch it or look at the box score.

If you’d beaten LSU at home, you wouldn’t be in this mess, Alabama. For that matter, if you’d beaten a single ranked team to this point, you wouldn’t be in this mess, Alabama. Don’t blame it on the Oregon athletics director.

Agreed. And this year has truly affirmed Kirby’s push to schedule big out of conference games. As long as you win those OOC games, it’s great insurance against a (probable) regular season SEC loss.

how do you think it affected UGA when the UF and GT AD’s were on the committee last year?

    Like

    • mp

I don’t think it made one iota of difference. UGA was treated the same as any other 2-loss team that didn’t win their conference would have been. If UGA had beaten Alabama, what do you think happens? You think they’re kept out?

The committee really should have adopted a “if you can’t even win your division, you shouldn’t get in” rule

I disagree. But I’m a “the four best teams in college football should get in, period” person. If all the data points to four teams in one division of one conference, I don’t care if those are the four teams that go to the playoff. That is why I find the argument to increase it to eight teams and have the five P5 champions automatically get in laughable.

I disagree, mostly because if Bama takes a loss in their toughest regular season game and doesn’t win their division but gets a shot at a national title for the third time in less than 10 years, the criteria are broken and biased (though I’ll admit if Bama can claim titles, I’m within my rights to not recognize their 2011 title at least. LSU-Okie St would’ve been fun to watch at least.)

Bama and Georgia both, with a back up QB, goes undefeated against Clemson’s schedule. If we’re banging on schedules, let’s start there.
