Looks like somebody threw away a perfectly good offensive strategy.

There is no statistic about Georgia’s offense this season that drives me crazier than this one.

For the love of Gawd, fellas, why do you do this to me?  Is it something I said?

I wonder how less frequently Fromm takes snaps under center this season compared to last season. It seems like he is almost exclusively in shotgun this season. And when he is under center, it seems a percentage of the play action is faking the jet sweep to Robertson or Simmons.

Exactly. Most of our play actions are faking the inside zone from the gun… in the spread. It ain’t really play action imo. We are much more successful on play action from under center. I wonder if this is Kirby’s version of combining physicality with the spread.

Ironic that Kirby was so slow to accept the spread offense and now as we see some sec teams bring back the i formation as part of their offensive package Kirby will probably be late to that trend as well. This is why Champ wants Bobo so badly imo… and why the east will become a lot tougher over the next few years.

Every time I watched CSU this year (granted not much), their general setup seemed similar to ours. Did Bobo move away from the I-formation ?

        • Nobody runs pure I formation (or its variations) now. Tight ends aren’t fullbacks.

Bobo really is multiple. I’m not suggesting we line up in the i every play but damn it seems like we could sure as hell do it in certain situations. But Kirby says that he doesn’t like a fullback so I suspect Coley will make him happy. I don’t think Bobo would tolerate that kind of oversight to his offense and I think that’s a big reason he ends up at Carolina… among other things.

I don’t think Bobo is going to Carolina. Boom’s time there seems tentative at best. Unless Bobo thinks if Boom goes he can slide into the HC position.

We were in the shotgun the same amount in 2017.

And note how often we are in the I formation. We’re going to do that and never use play action?

Last two games we’ve seen mire Under center snaps. Little bit of recent improvement I think.

  7. You can use play action in particular out of the pistol. Bobo and Murray used to shred defenses with it.

It is such a head scratcher. A team that runs the ball first..that has everyone keying on run first…should be living off of play action.
Wait a minute..maybe there’s some real slyness in play.
You HAVE to believe there’s a full stocking of surprises this Saturday.
That Kirbs will just sit back and let LSU load up and stuff the run is unimaginable. Well, maybe it is imaginable..but barely so.
I think he starts out with manball…running manball..and if LSU can’t handle it he will stick with it. If LSU is stuffing the run, Kirby will open it up with some shiny new to slightly used pigskin slinging. We know what LSU will do. There’s no reason for them to change. They don’t know what Dawgs O is capable of. There’s our hope.

lolol. and the only thing standing between me and becoming an astronaut is filling out the application.

we are going to run the plays we have the last 12 games, for better or worse. maybe there is a wrinkle or two here and there, but more importantly, hopefully we will see some freaking execution across 11 guys.

If he’s that unbending and still wins this game, a whole lot of people will be wrong…but your last sentence “hopefully we’ll see some freaking execution
across 11 guys” is absolutely the key to this offense straightening itself out.

With all of the analysts UGA has on staff the coaches have to know they’re not using play action.

They’ve not “Thrown away a perfectly good offensive strategy”..they’ve just left it in the broom closet. Maybe they’ll get it out and do some work with it.

or they have a good reason for not using play action. My guess is it works best for passes over the middle and in zone coverage. Two things we don’t see.

How the fuck is this even possible for a team that runs the ball as much as Georgia. This is complete and total coaching malfeasance.

If Kirby doesn’t fire this turd and bring Bobo back, or ANY coach who will actually provide a scheme to take advantage of the athletes we have while running the ball like Kirby wants, he’s going to face a seriously pissed-off fanbase and bunch of boosters for the first time in his coaching career.

Kirby isn’t stupid…don’t you think he would use it if the offense was successful at it? Play action almost always requires a true TE, which we don’t have, and skilled receivers that can beat man coverage. With a loaded box, and run blitzes on almost every run down, do we really want Fromm turning his back to the defense? Dawgs ran play action plenty last year. The losses at TE and WR have made that difficult to execute successfully very often.

Echo the comments above. My forever understanding is that under-center play action is so complimentary (necessary?) to our overall philosophy because (a) the run game becomes more downhill, seriously will-imposing that (b) necessitates more downhill commitment from second level defenders and that (c) the QB can provide a much better play fake since his back-turned body necessarily obscures the location of the football.

You can get so much mileage with a QB that can perfect his mechanics such that there is almost no “tell” between a handoff and play fake until it’s too late.

Mike Bobo is out at CS. Please, dear Gawd, somebody tell me Kirby has made him an offer he can’t refuse. Y’all think we can get him back in Athens in time to coach in the SECCG?

  15. Seems like running mostly out of shotgun has negatively affected Fromm, which has hurt the offense. Imo, play action out of shotgun isn’t as effective as out of other formations but you’d think we’d try it more with our tendency to run on early downs. Then again, maybe it comes down to confidence in our WRs. Maybe they’ve really limited us this year. Or maybe Coley has little feel for the game. Bobo was at least pretty good with that but that can be the difference between a pure playsheet OC and the opposite of that.

    • Given Fromm never took a meaningful snap from under center until he stepped foot in Athens, all of this about the shotgun affecting him doesn’t hold water. It’s more about the fact that he has a receiving corps that completely turned over. Throw in that Kirby has likely told him, “First, do no harm.”

It is really funny now to hear the calls for hire Bobo ASAP. How long was he gone and people still said I blame Bobo. There was a guy who used to sit a few rows down from me who continued to holler that for several years after he left for CSU.

That said by the time he left he was excellent at his job. i would be very happy to see him come home. I understand how close Bobo and Kirby are in life. I`m not sure they are on the same planet for game day planning. Any offense that leaves the defense tried and looking bad. I think will be a tough sell.

So if we go 3 and out first series. Run, run incomplete pass. If you hear a guy stand up and holler HIRE BOBO and get him here before halftime. Wave to me and offer me a beverage I might need it.

Preach it. Funny story – took my 12-year old daughter to the A&M game. I screamed “run play action!!” so often during the game that she hasn’t let me forget it and asked me while we were watching the Tech game “so are we STILL not using play action??”

Perchance first CS would need to recruit a FB if ya want to run some I formation. At last check we don’t have one on the roster. Wolf and Woerner don’t really impose much will on those DL penetrating the Great Wall of Georgia.
I would imagine Ben Cleveland might clean up penetration if we’re not using him at one of the 5 OL positions. He might even get 3 yds. on a quick opener. Hardest part of that would be changing his jersey.
Seen it in the Big 10 and even a few NFL’ers doin it.
