May we live in interesting times.

As Seth Emerson put it yesterday ($$),

You can at least say this for Georgia’s offense: It may have seemed boring to watch during the season. But once the offseason hit, well, it’s been anything but boring.

On that note, here’s a list of names in the transfer portal to watch as potential replacements for Jake Fromm.  Anybody there interest you?

  1. There isn’t a name on that list that moves the needle for me.

Must suck to be as loyal as Bennet has been and not be given any chance. Does it pay to be a DGD in the new world of college football.

No disrespect, but this isn’t little league. And Bennett left after a year to go to JUCO in search of playing time and a path to a scholarship. He got a last second offer only because Fields left and the staff knew Bennett was familiar with the system. If not for that, he’d be a backup at an FCS school.

I do remember a couple years ago when the defense was praising the play of Stetson on the scout team as QB. they said he was accurate and extreme quick and illusive. I say give him a chance.

My limited impression (which his JC stats actually back up) is that he’s too much of a gambler. Seems like every time he went in, he tried to make a throw that ended up being nearly picked.

Among the QBs we currently have, who has demonstrated anything better than what’s in the portal? Ideally, which TWO have demonstrated anything better? We’re going to need help at QB and the only place it’s coming from this year is the portal.

If the grad transfer comes in and doesn’t win the job, then great. That means someone stepped up.

      • Do I have to remind you who the last grad transfer to come to Athens was?

Which of these graduate transfers do you believe will lead to an SEC title? In my opinion, none of them. That’s why I say none of these guys move the needle for me. There is no Jalen Hurts type of player in the portal that you can build a team around.

  2. Newman is the guy unless King enters the portal. I think Kirby wants a guy that can move a bit, so that takes out Costello. It’s hard to predict what Newman would be like with blue chip talent by watching his WF film and comparing his stats. I think he has some skills that can translate well to what Kirby and Coley would like to do. Expect more standing and looking at the sideline instead of on-field checks and expect a lot more QB runs.

Costello can move pretty well, actually. He’s not a true dual threat but he’s got wheels. He just has multiple concussions and doesn’t do a good job protecting himself.

Newman had Surratt, who will play on Sundays. And he faced very few DBs who will play on Sundays. But he seems to see the field well, and he’s very good at executing the run concepts within that offense.

But he’s headed to Oregon from what I am hearing from my friends in RTP, just waiting for them to settle on a new OC. We’ll see

Sorry for my ignorance, but can someone who is more in the know than I give me the 411 on why Newman is so highly sought after? Stats and ranking out of HS don’t really read like anything other than “decent/serviceable” other than have some running ability.

I’m ready for Mathis to show his game – the kid can play.

Amen. If we’re rebuilding the offense, let’s rebuild the offense from the ground up. Give a young kid the chance to take the start from the get go.

I would love to see Mathis take this opportunity and run with it as well, but if he was my son, I would encourage him to leave football alone. Even if he’s cleared, I’m still concerned about his safety on the field. For example, see the Baylor qb.

Yeah that’s where I’m at too. I want nothing but great things for the guy after everything he’s gone through, and the idea of him coming in and lighting it up for us next year with Zeus in the backfield makes for such an inspiring story. However, the parent in me would wince every time he takes a hit.

I have not watched him play but I like Jett’s numbers…and he’s mobile.

All I know is, it’s the off-season, and yet the D continues to pull it’s weight while the O continues to disappoint and generate all the negative noise.

I do like Newman from WF; the rest I’m not so sure could beat out Tfr Beck to be honest, including King, who seems to be everyone’s favorite but I don’t see it myself (under 6 ft, ok arm, questionable decision to bolt the team after a few losses, etc.)

Plus, I already have my ‘hello, Newman’ line teed up for if/when he signs, so I’m looking forward to that.

Newman graduated from Wake so he has the mental capability. He is 6 4 230 and can run. He also has a strong arm.

No one’s coming right out and saying it — certainly no one on the coaching staff — but I now can’t help but think that D’Wan Mathis’ football days are over. A 4-star mobile QB with a live arm that we flipped from Ohio State … and he doesn’t even seem to be a blip on the 2020 QB radar at this point? The whole conversation seems to revolve around experienced back-up Bennett, true freshman Beck, or a possible transfer.

For what it’s worth (nothing), after having watched some highlight videos, I actually now prefer Newman of all the transfer options. He can run the ball effectively, but he’s pretty clearly a passer first. And he loves throwing the ball downfield.

I’m kind of thinking the same thing. Hard to see a kid playing again after that. And for the same reason, I wouldn’t pursue Costello. Two concussions in a season would DQ a kid for me.

I’d love it if Mathis was the guy, but I’d hate for it to kill him. Bennett isn’t it, and Beck is unknown. A grad transfer is the best insurance.

Is Trask a grad yet? He isn’t a 5 star, but they owe us a transfer for a position of need. Kirby usually gets what he wants from that state and has been taking Dancing Danny’s lunch money his whole career. Kid doesn’t have many starts sine his nuts dropped but he has potential, and he might like to play on the winning side of a Cocktail Party game for once.

I’m not seeing this year’s Fields, Burrough, etc. out there.

On a related , who will be the top returning QB in the SEC? Mond? Trask? Nix?

SEC media are already hailing Trask as all SEC QB next season, and Florida fans now think 2020 is their window for sideshow Dan to finally topple us given the news. Never mind the fact that our defense will in all likelihood be better next year…

Kirbys major screw up was not sealing the deal on Plumlee. He should have gone ahead and signed him to last years class instead of asking him to wait before going on scholarship. He will be a star a Mississipi.

I hope we stay with the quarterbacks we have unless we get another one via recruiting. Beck is a taller, more mobile version of Fromm. Mathis is one of the fastest players on the team, has a great arm and was good enough to be going to OState before Fields jumped. Stetson is a multi-deminsional quarterback as well. The quality of the returning defense should cushion the effect of a new quarterback. Also, notice from the SBowl that the offense is already changing. While no passes went to tight ends, the middle of the field was targeted more and the running game moved to the edges giving our backs space to operate. Dawgs will be even better next year.

No matter how things shake out at QB, I don’t see any of these guys — including the possible transfers — walking into Bryant-Denny Stadium and beating Alabama.

My way-too-early prediction for 2020 is that we go 11-1 (once again), win the East (once again), get our asses handed to us in the SECCG (once again), and narrowly miss out on the playoffs (once again). With a new starter at QB, that’d actually be a great season. But it would really suck if it allowed an 11-1 Florida to sneak into the playoffs.

GRAD 92 With Kiffin coming in it would be unrealistic for a QB to transfer to Ga, would you? I had hopes for the same thing but he will be a star at ole miss with Kiffin coaching him, enuff said!!!!!!!
