Today, in you, too, can be a college AD

Shot ($$).

… And though Leach is a huge name inside and outside college football — he’s been the subject of a “60 Minutes” profile and a Michael Lewis profile in The New York Times Magazine — his hire feels like an admission by Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen that Cohen, the Bulldogs’ longtime baseball coach before he became AD, understands his football program’s place in the universe.

Chaser.

  1. So AD’s are turning to the Family Feud strategy of hiring coaches? Survey says…….

Leach is the best hire Missy State could have made who would take the job. Starkville is a coaching graveyard. Leach has a history of winning at places like that.

Not to mention, rolling with his air raid is probably better than any other strategy for a place that’s at best 5th in the West and probably not close to the 4th best team. Try to remove your handicaps in the trenches from the equation as best you can and play an exciting offense while you do it.

and it did just dawn on me they had a couple NFL d-lineman just 2 years ago, but nevertheless it’s going to be a long term rarity for State to be able to compete in the trenches on both sides of the ball simultaneously.

Because it worked so well for John Currie at Tennessee.

If Leach finally hires a really good DC, they could be in the running for (checks schedule)…6th place in the West!

(National Geographic Channel Narrator’s voice): “As members of the troop vie for dominance and the right to mate, the baboons newest to the troop are often set upon by the existing members and despite their bared teeth, screeching, and the exposing of bright red hindquarters are set upon and driven away by the more established members. Forced into the protection of the branches, they must make do on what is cast aside from the group proper until one of the original members is eventually cannibalized, making space for another to become assimilated into the hierarchy.”

I’ve been to Starkville for MSU UGA and MSU UF. The advantage Mike will have is the same that the Genius had at Tech for a number of years, he’s the only one running it. He will make it fun and will be a pain in the butt for his Eastern crossover and once in a decade Eastern opponents. After a few years, unless he find magic in a bottle like he did at TT, he will be hard pressed to out score the rest of the West. Still it’s going to a lot of fun watching.
