Georgia has in its proverbial backyard one of the top high school quarterbacks in the country: Brock Vandagriff, currently a junior at Athens’ Prince Avenue Prep, de-committed from Oklahoma last month. Vandagriff is known primarily as a pocket passer but he can also run. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards as a sophomore and is on the basketball and track teams at Prince Avenue Prep. (He missed most of his junior season after breaking his fibula.)
Vandagriff is rated the nation’s top pro-style quarterback recruit by 247Sports, and is the No. 8 overall prospect in the 2021 class. But Georgia has also been in the mix for the top-rated dual-threat quarterback, Caleb Williams of Washington D.C., who is the No. 15 overall prospect in the 2021 class.
Both Vandagriff and Williams are being recruited by James Coley, Georgia’s quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. Coley also ran lead on Newman, in case anyone needs reminding his value to Kirby Smart as a recruiter.

That’s the problem—Coley is a great recruiter so Kirbs keeps him around as QB coach and OC. Can’t we find something else for him? After awhile the recruits will figure out that no matter how charming he is he will be a liability to them after they enroll. Then he’ll quit being an effective recruiter. I hear that there is a vacancy at LSU. Send him there—after recruiting is over.

It’s true. His stint at Georgia has crippled the NFL prospects of Javon Wims, Mecole Hardman, Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, Riley Ridley, Isaac Nauta, Jake Fromm, D’Andre Swift, Andrew Thomas, Lamont Galliard, Terry Godwin, Isaiah Wynn, Isaiah Wilson and Solomon Kindley. His mere presence shaves half a second off 40 times and reduces vertical jumps by three inches. George Pickens might as well transfer now. Who would possibly draft him after Coley tainted him?

I’m at the point where I couldn’t care less about how our system prepares players for the NFL. I’m happy for them when they do well, but UGA being as successful as possible is what matters to me.

Agreed. The fans want championships. Glad the players do well, but winning recruiting titles and having a lot of players drafted should be a means to an end, not the end itself.

Depends on your perspective. For us fans, championships matter.
But for the kids themselves, the NFL is THE objective.

I don’t watch the NFL not even the Super Bowl but I am happy when I see the news story that a kid who played in Athens has success in the NFL.

Championships vs NFL is not an either or thing. Lets not get carried away like their is no correlation between teams winning championships and players that get drafted from those teams. Naturally, kids want both. End of story.

Championships and nfl are two different stories, should players (no matter the level/sport) have an opportunity at a collegiate championship or even get one, good deal…should that player ever get a chance at the next level, god bless ’em…nfl is a small group of participants

You literally are making the same argument to excuse not winning national titles that people used for years under Richt. “Yeah, we’re not winning national titles and our defense kinda stinks, but look at all those players, especially on defense, that Richt sends to the NFL!”
Right around 2013, people started realizing that if Richt sent the 4th most players to the NFL during his tenure, more than Florida, more than Bama, than Richt should have won a National Title or two, that he severely underachieved to the talent he had, and even more, that the talent underachieved at Georgia and only blossomed in the NFL.
Is that what you want again? For Kirby?
People think I hate Kirby, but I don’t. I think Kirby can be one of the greatest head coaches in not only Georgia history, but in CFB history. However, if Kirby doesn’t quit with this stubbon manball b.s. philosophy and get with the times, he will wind up EXACTLY like Richt: An underachiever.
I want to win, dammit. ANY WAY POSSIBLE. I’m angry right now that it seems Kirby only wants to win HIS way when it’s obvious to anyone with a brain in CFB that his way doesn’t work anymore.

To hold this year’s offensive recruiting class intact, at least as much as possible following Pittman’s departure, I think Coley had to stay. He sold incoming receivers on playing time and a promised a grad transfer QB the chance to play in a pro style offense and give himself the best shot at the NFL. Both are strong selling points without having to even mention an overhaul of the existing offense.
But, I’m still hoping a new offensive mind will fill that empty seat at the coach’s table. A regressing quarterback and underperforming talent at wide receiver might not be isolated to one season without some new ideas.

I think the No. 1 reason why Fromm left is because Kirby told him Coley stays and nothing changes. I guarantee you no one knows more than anyone how bad a QB coach Coley is than Fromm. We’ve seen Fromm throw over the middle of the field to attack defenses before. Why did that suddenly change this year? His passing chart shows a pathological choice to avoid throwing over the middle of the field.
Whether it’s Kirby or Coley, this is the Georgia offense and nothing will change for 2020.

I definitely agree Coley had a negative effect on Fromm, both through play calling and likely in coaching his mechanics. Fromm became less mobile, less accurate and made poorer progressions this year, period. I also think the effect of losing Swift, both tackles, both tight ends and really having only one reliable, returning wideout made Fromm worried about another down year which would further hurt his draft prospects. And since Tua is going this year, Fromm is at best the #3 QB 2020. If Tua goes next year, Fromm is at best #4 in 2021. This was just the better year for him to go, probably regardless of Coley staying or leaving.

He coached him last year, too. You guys should try to remember that. He coached QBs during Fromm’s best season. I have no idea how much of the problem on offense was Coley, but you’re basing all of these assumptions on one one half-season of football.

I am tending to think more and more that Fromm’s offensive struggles this year and his decision to leave might be somewhat tied to a certain person who was in the stands at the Sugar Bowl sitting next to his parents. That person, btw, has already graduated.

Also, I love your handle. Mick Foley is maybe my favorite WWF/WWE wrestler ever. Yeah, he was mostly a jobber toiling away in the matches in the middle of the show or the PPV, but damn if he didn’t put his body on the line and make every match he was in an amazingly professional and fun match. My favorite era of the WWF was the Attitude Era, when he was Mankind, and when he and The Rock became the greatest tag team in wrestling history: The Rock and Sock Connection.
Whether he was Cactus Jack, Dude Love, or Mankind, Mick Foley was amazing.

It was amazing! It was never the same after The Rock left for Hollywod, Stone Cold semi-retired because of injury, and Triple-H stopped being a heel. When they changed the name to WWE. Then the roster turned-over and it was guys like The Miz. I stopped watching.

Then why did Fromm have a one-on-one meeting with Newman convincing him to come to UGA if he hated Coley/Kirby so much? I’m not the biggest fan of Coley and I want Kirby to open up the offense like many, but you are projecting here.

I think the #1 reason Fromm left is because folks know how to defend him and another year of playing like crap will just tank his draft status.
He isn’t good enough to increase his draft status, so he might as well go get the money now before getting hurt or dropping further.
Fromm should spend more time getting better and less time quoting bible verses.

I’m sorry, but scoring 24 against Florida and 26 against Baylor isn’t a great game when Bama, LSU, Clemson, tOSU, you know, the teams we believe we compete against for playoff spots, are scoring 40 points a game.
This isn’t the 1990’s or 2000’s anymore. Offenses need to score, and never stop scoring. They need to be dynamic. They need to throw the dang ball over the middle of the field. Get back to me when Coley calls an offense like that.
Also, I do believe this is Kirby’s fault as much as anything, but Coley has never been a good OC, even when he had control.

I actually think play calling was much better later in the season but execution was not there. And Coley shares responsibility for that as the QB coach. I still think we could do a better job scheming the receivers open, but them actually catching the ball when thrown to them, or the pass actually being on target also has an effect on play calling.
I think Kirby full recognizes the problems with offense last season and they will be addressed. How effective we will be remains to be seen. I just hope we don’t waste an all-world defense trying to find answers on offense.

Agreed. A dedicated QB coach is indicated. Say what you want about Jim Chaney as an OC, but the guy can coach QBs. To me, this is where Coley has been found lacking.

Coley WAS the dedicated QB coach during Chaney’s time here. Maybe the fact that during that time Coley could just coach QB and didn’t have to do any of the other things that an OC had to do was the problem. Maybe got too distracted and didn’t have enough time to work on Fromm’s mechanics?
I think if we found a coach who could take over playcalling, that would be helpful. When teams went from zone to man to man after USC, the plays did not reflect man-beating route concepts.

Coaches are great recruiters at Georgia because it’s Georgia, not Vanderbilt. “Could I interest you in driving this Ford Fiesta for the next 4 years or ….. galvanizing around in this spanking new Corvette, while we try to make you rich in the NFL? Is the guy asking the question a good recruiter?

Kirby’s approach is an interesting experiment: what happens when the focus (at least on the offensive side of the coaching staff) is all “Jimmies and Joes” rather than “Xs and Os?”

I still think we’ve taken for granted the decimation from 18′ to 19′ in returning receiver experience. After Hollomon was let go, I think our leading returnee had 9 receptions. That’s a ridiculous mountain to climb. No doubt some may have left out of jaded attitudes with the offense and I don’t discount that. So if we get some change at the same time we increase experienced depth, I think we can put the problems of 2019 passing game behind us.

The OC/QB coach is not the position for a glorified salesman. Hide that guy as the TE or RB coach. You have to hire an X and O/technique guy to head your offense. If you run a great system, it will recruit itself.

I kindly disagree that Coley called a “great game” in the Sugar Bowl. It was actually more of the same. It looked “great” because 5 star, Pickens was superman for a night. Fact is, tight ends got zero passes. Backs got 1 for 1 yard. The silver lining is Coach Luke in his first game. For the first time all year, our running attack wasn’t straight into a stacked box. We relentlessly attacked the edges, getting our guys out in space. The defense had to run to defend .. why they wore down as the game progressed. Credit should be given to Coley for a faster tempo which allowed Fromm to get into rhythm and for more throws to the middle of the field.

Kirby pointed out that Baylor looked weak on the edges and susceptible to outside runs. Sounds like that dictated the game plan rather than a new face on the coaching staff.
I do think Luke is an upgrade in coaching the OL. Pittman was a lights out recruiter but appeared to lack the coaching chops to truly coach up 4 & 5 Star OL recruits. Many of the scouting reports indicate a lack of development along the OL. Several reported that both of our tackles were considered “raw”.

We don’t need a new OC. What we need is better execution across all offensive categories and we need Cortez Hankton to step his coaching game. You can’t have WR’s making route running errors 11 games into the season. We also need a dedicated QB coach and play calling analyst (see Joe Brady for further details). I believe Kirby is working on it. We’ll be fine.

Coley needs help. Whether that’s similar to the analysts brought in after 2016 that made Chaney look a lot better in 2017, or a full-on passing game coordinator/QB coach, we’ll see. But hopefully something like that happens.

So we are loaded up with recruiters and we have a team full of out this world talent .….. No coaches that can truly coach to get the talent out of the players and win championships
We have to find a balance, we need someone on offense that has a system and can improve QBs …..Right now we don’t have that and I don’t see it getting any better with exp ,,,Coley looked like a clown while at FLSt (ever wonder why Jimbo didn’t make a run at getting him back) and he looks like a clown now …. Chaney had a system and is a very good Qb coach , Coley runs 6 end-around a football game then throws a few passes in the flat has a QB who cant keep his elbow tock in and reverts to throwing sidearm as often as not
Come On man get us an Xs and Os guy to improve the Qbs and make the offense better if you wanna keep the clown that’s fine he can recruit hire a real coach to coach
