I can’t get over the contrast between this Randy Edsall quote about the transfer portal…
… and Kirby’s comment about Jamie Newman’s transfer.
“I know Jamie has been very mature about the process,” Smart said. “These grad transfers, No. 1 the fact that they graduated college, the fact he graduated from Wake Forest, these kids understand what they want. And they’re very driven in what they want. They’re really not into the whole recruiting process. So he handled it that way, and was very professional about it. We’re looking forward to putting him to work and letting him go out and compete this spring.”
I don’t know what’s sadder, Edsall’s mindless take on kids’ mindset, or that UConn is sold on a guy like Edsall as its head coach.
Anyone who recruited and got a verbal commitment from Aaron Hernandez shouldn’t be sanctimonious about recruiting entitled players.

I don’t know that they are talking about the same stock of athletes. Grad transfers are not the same as a not-yet graduated athlete. While I think KS is correct in his assessment of grad transfers, Edsell may not be too far off with his comment on undergraduate transfers.

And you know this how?

I am actually doing a thesis on the transfer portal. A student-athlete graduating while still having eligibility is an indication of a focused individual. I feel like KS’s description is more reflective of grad transfers than it is of undergrad transfers. Does UGA have any undergrad transfers? I don’t think the two coaches are talking about the same things.

… Kirby is going to take an undergrad transfer as well, I promise you.

Well Kirby is talking about a GRAD transfer who has played a few yrs. at his school and got his degree. Maybe Edsell is talking about a freshman who came in and thought his star rating intitled him to start right away. Then when he didn’t, he started sulking.
Kinda like someone at UGA in 18, but that is just an opinion.

Don’t bring Luke Ford into this. We have no idea what motivated him.

I’m guessing he’s referring to Cox.

Certainly not a specific QB.

To be fair aren’t they talking about 2 different types of players? Newman is a grad transfer. Edsal is talking about an underclassmen who enters the portal.

Edsall doesn’t say what you attribute to him there, sunshine.

They’re still discussing two different categories, if you’re going to get all bitchy about it. Edsall is referring to all kids in the transfer portal, and Smart is talking specifically about graduate transfers. Edsall is speaking too broadly, sure, but I think it’s reasonable to assume the kinds of players he’s talking about are the sulky undergrads, who do exist.
He’s also probably a hypocrite who would take an elite transfer in a heartbeat regardless of his attitude if any wanted to come play for his shitty team, but that’s another matter.

The point isn’t that such kids exist. It’s that Edsall won’t even take the trouble to find out if there are those who are more thoughtful.
As far as hypocrisy goes, I’m guessing he didn’t stick himself with the “enabled and entitled” label when he jumped ship from UConn the first time to take the Maryland job.
Really amazing to see people defending one of the biggest assholes in college football.

Remember the Maryland booster who accused the Maryland players who went public of being entitled and ungrateful for the opportunities that Maryland’s benevolent boosters create for them? I mean, screw that fat dead kid for ruining everything.
It’s a built in response to anything that benefits players. They don’t deserve it, college football exists to inject character into their otherwise pointless lives, and and transferring just short circuits that whole character building thing,
Forget the fact that they are transferring to another college football program which is also doing that character building thing. It’s only my program doing that.

The universe has few absolutes and all transfer players in the portal have issues with being “enabled and entitled” isn’t one of them. A dumb comment that cuts yourself off from potential talent for your program. Hire that guy!

Perhaps UConn should work some language into Coach Edsall’s contract that he will get a $5,000 bonus for every player he successfully recruits from the transfer portal.

Yeah, and I’d never sleep with Gal Gadot. Sure, she’s hot, but if she’d sleep with me then she’s got issues. I don’t have time for that.

When you reject her, have her call me and I’ll come over and console her…but only if she wears the WW uni. 😜

Grad transfers should be a separate issue. The undergrads in the transfer portal come in all flavors. We have had some leave due to entitlement, discipline, and family issues. Would ANYONE call Luke Ford entitled for wanting to be closer to his ill grandfather. If putting family first is entitled, then I want more quality “entitled” kids like him on my roster. Let’s look at who came in. His “think they’re enabled and entitled” does not exactly pop into my head when I think of J.R. Reed. Not to mention any names, but with couple of QB’s who went to OSU and the U that does come to mind. When a QB who left OSU and wound up in Athens is mentioned, that has never appeared to be the case.

Jesus, Edsall is such a tool. Want to talk about entitled? Buddy, you’re on your second stint at the trainwreck that is UConn after you flamed out at Maryland. It seems to me you should be looking at what you can do to do your job. But hey, if the bottom of your league is where you want to be, I guess you can keep collecting those bonuses for first downs in a game.
