PFF’s Top 10 returning SEC players piece:
- has two Dawgs on the list in Jamie Newman and George Pickens;
- lists Newman third, behind LSU’s Stingley and Chase;
- says of Newman, “With Newman, a run at the National Championship is realistic for Georgia.“;
- lists Pickens seventh, making him and Stingley the only two true freshmen to make the list; and
- notes that Pickens “saw the third-most catchable targets without a drop among FBS receivers in 2019”.
The cherry on top of the sundae…
… with Jamie Newman now throwing Pickens the ball, the Bulldogs have easily the best quarterback-receiver duo in the SEC and one of the best in the country.
Cigarette?
Oh come on.

(Sigh) I suppose I need to check out some of Newman’s highlights. I hope it doesn’t cause my currently remissed Greyson’s Syndrome to flare up. I mean, Newman hasn’t played a down in the SEC yet.

You are on the money. A transfer coming off a season where he had a better passing efficiency rating and yards per game ranking than Jake Fromm is equal to a transfer who was a second string QB at his former school.
Got it.

Ok maybe I dawgraded Newman a little too much with the Lambert comparison, but can we at least get through G-Day before we go full on Heisman with him?

PFF was really high on Newman while he was still at WF last year. There’s a lot to like about his size and arm strength. We’ll see if his skills matched with better athletes around him translates into a more effective offense at UGA.

I haven’t seen one prediction that he would be a Heisman candidate. I have seen where some people said he HAS A CHANCE to be the best QB in the conference. No one said he is a lock to be.

He has the 4th best Heisman odds according to Westgate in Las Vegas. Just FYI. https://247sports.com/college/georgia/Article/Heisman-Trophy-2020-Georgia-Bulldogs-Football-Jamie-Newman-143593530/

Saw a handful of tweets yesterday about “prayers for Newman” and hoping Newman is alright. Not gonna lie, I panicked and went to all my favorite Dawg sites and found nothing before learning about the wreck at the Daytona 500. Glad Jamie is alright and I hope Ryan Newman is as well.

Ryan Newman’s condition was stated as serious but not life-threatening last night. It was a horrific crash with the driver’s side window getting t-boned by an oncoming car doing about 200mph… while Newman’s car was, in the air, upside down.

Newman wasn’t even the 3rd best QB in the ACC last season, much less the 3rd best player. And the ACC sucked out loud as a conference in 2019.
He can do great things here because of the talent here, but the hype is officially stupid now.

Actually, he was probably exactly the third best QB in the ACC, though it’s a little muddled after Lawrence and Perkins.

Howell blew him away as a passer. As a true freshman on a team with 2 FBS wins to its credit over the last two seasons

And Newman ran for about 500 more yards than Howell. On a team with roughly half the talent of North Carolina. As I said, it’s muddled.

I think the Wake talent issue is overblown. They played in the equivalent of a Sun Belt division last season if you subtract Clemson. Newman and his receivers were the best players on the field in a LOT of their games. The offensive line was sufficient for the level of front 7 talent they faced in every game except Clemson.
The assumption seems to be that Newman lifted Wake way above its normal punching level, and that’s just not in the data.
He’s a gifted kid who has a real opportunity to make a big splash in Athens. But anointing him 3rd best player in the SEC already? Insanity.

Wake hasn’t finished higher than 10th in the ACC in recruiting the last five years, including 14th and 13th in 2017 and 2018. Georgia Tech outrecruited them every year but one over that span. They lack talent even by ACC standards.
As for their offensive line, you can feel free to go watch some highlights. They were terrible against anyone with anything resembling talent in the front four.
I’m not saying this to suggest he’s going to be first-team All-SEC, but I don’t know why you want to talk the kid down more than he deserves.

Okay, so I was a little excited anticipating that Newman would be an upgrade from Fromm, especially with the added mobility, but the praises being sung seem a little high given the evidence. I watched some highlights from Newman’s 2019 season with Wake, and he appeared to be a good QB and athlete, but awesome?
I wonder if they are doing this…good QB + experience + better OL + better surrounding talent = awesome?
I hope all of these accolades are prophetic and not rat poison.

Hopefully, there will be an upgrade in receivers (or lack of)…something for him to work with.
That was the biggest issue last year.

I like a seasoned guy running the offense but it’s new to them all. He may be challenged by some talented guys. I hope he is.

If Georgia wins the East, I would sit Pickens out for the GT game.
The nerds will try to bait him into getting thrown out again so he will miss the first half of the SECCG again.
Unless he’s calmed down a lot in a years’ time.
I do love his competitiveness, though! He’s already made a name for himself and he’s going to be a great one..One of the missing pieces to the NC…George Pickens is! If Jamie is even close to “as advertised” we’re all going to be having fun!

I don’t know. Sitting out half a game might be worth seeing him slam another techy into the wall. 😉

If you’re telling me that he makes it through a trip to Tuscaloosa on that huge stage, another game against the Auburn team that he spurned, as well as another game against Fake DBU in Jacksonville with his emotions in check I’m going to say that he’ll be able to get through the Georgia Tech game this time. He’s had a year to grow up and think about what the consequences of his actions were. If he’s not mature enough to handle himself in that game it will have cost us well before Thanksgiving. I, for one, am optimistic that he’ll be a more mature player.

I am as big of a Dawg fan as anyone here, I like thinking positive over negative, and a little porn is occasionally good for everyone, but that is some overly sweet Kool Aide there. We have so many questions on our offense, let’s just hope we are good enough on defense to stay in contention for the East long enough to win it in JAX, and then able to compete with whomever comes limping into Atlanta for the SECCG. That is at least possible, doable, and reasonable, imo.
ll this crowning folks in February is bad enough when you are returning everyone off a successful unit, but when you are replacing everyone off your weakest unit, and have a new OC, just slow your fantasies down. If we can get there, it will be because we scratch and claw long enough until we can jell enough to make a stretch run. Man, we sound like FU fans this year last off season. Yes, we should be good enough to beat them again, but we have fewer facts on our side going into 2020. They may have a 40% chance this year, versus about 20% last season.
