Back in the saddle again

Some good news on the health front:

UGASports has learned Georgia head coach Kirby Smart told supporters in Charlotte on Monday night that redshirt freshman quarterback D’Wan Mathis has been officially cleared to practice ahead of spring camp.

Mathis – who underwent brain surgery last May – will compete with grad transfer Jamie Newman, Stetson Bennett and Carson Beck for playing time once spring practice begins March 17.

Boy, what a change in the quarterback room from last September, eh?

I’m really happy for him. It’s going to be fun to finally get to see him compete in the red and black. Just from reading the quotes from this dad about his time in Athens and the affection they’ve developed for UGA and the medical staff, I know it will mean a lot to him to finally be able to play, too. I hope he’s successful. He’s definitely got a lot of competition for playing time, that’s for sure.

Great news! Hope he’s back and ready to go and we have a tight QB competition all spring/summer.

Those guys can feed off each other and learn from each other. Some good chemistry in that group would really set 2020 on a strong trajectory.

This warms all of our hearts! Congratulations to D’Wan and his family!
Neman’s being a one and done and Bennett being in his last year UGA makes this huge for 2021 and beyond especially.

You just know that the first time he steps on the field as the starter or in mop up duty, the place is going to go nuts. The fact that he has recovered enough to be able to compete is already the biggest win he will ever have.

This will be fun watching him play. Who knows, he could have been a sleeper all along. He damn sure knows the playbook by now, or at least what will remain of it.

Obviously it appears Newman is the guy this year. But the 2021 QB competition should be a doozy. Will be a talented JR and a talented SO (at least one of whom will probably have a good bit of mop up experience), and a VERY talented 5* freshman.

Shaping up to be a real message board shit show.

Will Kirby and Monken let them run at G-Day?

The one-hand touch rule accounted for seven sacks last year. Five on Mathis.

  15. Great news! I hope he can find success here at some point. There are several talented QBs who could end up here but I’d love if he could rise to the top over the next couple seasons.

I’m sure he is excited to get a chance to play but if I’m his parent I don’t think I would want him out there. One wrong hit could put him in a bad state of health for the rest of his life. Guess you have to weigh the risk.

I believe Mathis will be the backup and see significant playing time this season. The kid can play. Competition will be fierce next year and beyond in the UGA QB room. I’m sure the “portal master” (and Tennessee) will be lurking in the wings to grab whoever doesn’t win our starting job. Make book on it.
