Solution seems fairly simple to me. Change the rule so that any time the clock is stopped for an injured player, the injured player cannot return until there is a change of possession.

I’m thinking same way. If it’s real injury, you’re out anyway. If it’s fake you sit the series. Doesn’t impact game flow and fits with current rules and officiating.
It’s a fair and easy to execute solution, so it’s clearly DOA. 😂

      Yep. Not hard at all.

Except, Brian Kelly tells the 3rd string noseguard, go in an after the play fake an injury. Brian Kelly wouldn’t care if the 3rd stringer sits out as long as he can slow the offense down.

The consequences has to somehow be on the team.

No, the others are right in the “change of possession” solution. Kelly, and any other head coach, isn’t going to put an inept player in to just stop a clock temporarily. It isn’t like basketball where you go in to get the other team’s star to be ejected for fighting and miss the rest of the game. By the time they are in the hurry up, you cannot get a sub in anyway. This is a no-brainer, don’t understand what the committee has to study on this. What is the downside? Player safety is a safe haven from critics. If it doesn’t work, they can always make the penalty stiffer next year.

Yea but they had a third stringer in for a play. A coach doing this regularly is going to get burnt with some big plays.

Also, Kelly can’t sub that guy in if the offense doesn’t sub first…in which case he wouldn’t need to fake an injury.

The problem is you may have players with legitimate injuries that would “play through the injury” to not be forced out an entire possession. That would lead to even MORE significant injuries since they are hiding injuries because of that.

That is already going on. The fake injuries currently have no downside when a team is out of timeouts or wants to slow down a hurry up offense. If a player decides to play through an injury, that is his and the coach’s decision. A coach isn’t going to want a player on the field that isn’t at 100%.

Aren’t we trying to make football safer? If we assume they would “play through” more significant injuries to avoid sitting out an entire series, then we have a problem.

Allow an exception if the defensive team elects to burn a timeout and let the player return – sort of like the rule for offensive players late in the game.

In the name of player safety make him sit out 4 quarters. He “might” really be hurt.

It’s not as simple as some make it out to be. Suppose your RB has a leg cramp which is clearly a problem for him. He goes to the sideline and the cramp goes away after some attention by the trainers. Does he now need to sit until there is a change in possession?

  4. Now we’re going to have players intentionally have their helmets come off. Coaches like Kelly will figure out something to get around it.

If there is any question about faking an injury, the coach should lose a timeout. That’s clearly something that could be buzzed down from the replay booth.

I’m all for player safety first, but this injury faking has to be stopped. If you are injured, you should have to sit for the remainder of the possession. The question would be how easily can that be enforced.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the committee goes the other direction and modifies the substitution rule in a way that slows down the HUNH (in the name of player safety of course). Faster games are fewer commercials you know.

It seems that UGA has been hurt more by the abuse than other teams. So we’re particularly pissed off about it.
But one real danger the fakers are posing, is that some kid that really does need to come out will not because he doesn’t want to be accused of being dishonest, unsportsmanlike and a cheat. So he stays in and aggravates an injury. Adding penalties will make this scenario more likely. A kid will just stay in.
There has to be a solution. It may be as simple as the refs before the coin flip, going to the sideline and asking the head coaches if they, “promise your team won’t fake injuries?” It would be very humiliating to have that inquiry televised and then, when the faking starts, to have the cameras pan in on the lying coach’s face.
When ND pulled this stunt I was shocked. I naively believed that program was too squeaky clean for such. It’s Auburn stuff. Any semblance of respect I had for Gus went down the drain when they lined up in the safe formation against Wisconsin and then tried to run a trick play out of it. Just low class.
HOW ’bout…if team X has a “convenient injury” to stop play, and thus the clock, then team Y is give the option to add 10 seconds or subtract 10 seconds on the clock once at any point of their choosing for the rest of the game. The second offense gives them 15 more seconds to play with…etc.

Two classes now mandatory for football players; basic acting and stage combat.

  8. The player in question must enter into a defined injury portal, where said player will be assigned an injury, should a secondary injury occur inside the prescribed time Zone said player will be forced to transport to another injury zone and will be penalized one year suspension and can’t use that injury till such time has healed all those involved…

In the interest of player safety, any injured player who fell after being able to stand and walk, or is lying on the ground unable to get up, must leave the field and must be thoroughly attended to by medical staff for the remainder of the series of plays or until fully cleared by medical staff whichever event occurs later.

If you wanted to go full blown player safety you could make them sit for the Quarter. I know that is silly but for the possession makes sense, at least the same player couldn’t stop play on the same possession. What about if a player goes out injured more than once in a quarter he sits for the remainder the quarter.
They could also do it for the loss of helmet but that would encourage more helmets being ripped off.
