Your Daily Gator is diggin’ Heather Dinich.

You’d think the average Georgia fan looking at the 2020 regular season schedule would step back and identify Alabama as the Dawgs’ biggest obstacle to making the playoffs this season, wouldn’t you?  I mean, look at 2017 and 2018, right?

Wrong, bacon breath.

Biggest obstacle to playoff: Oct. 31 vs. Florida. Yes, the most difficult game on the schedule is the Sept. 19 trip to Alabama, but Georgia can lose and still have a chance to avenge the loss in the SEC championship — if it wins the East. And it’s not going to be as easy as the preseason predictions might lead you to believe. Georgia has defeated its SEC East rival three straight seasons, but on paper, Florida might be more deserving of the label preseason favorite in its division. The Gators return 12 starters from last season’s 11-win team, including quarterback Kyle Trask.

On paper, eh?  Well, Heather’s ESPN colleague notes that Georgia returns more production than does Florida.

ESPN statistics junkie Bill Connelly released his list of teams with the most returning production. Georgia was ranked No. 59, with 65 percent of its production returning, 50 percent on offense (98th in the country), and 80 percent on defense (21st in the country). For reference, Georgia Tech is No. 2, Kentucky is No. 25, Tennessee is No. 50, Florida is No. 61, Auburn is No. 78, Alabama is No. 88, and LSU is No. 126.

But muh quarterback!  Man, this is really turning into one “kneel before Kyle Trask” offseason narrative.  Gator Nation has to be thrilled.

GT at 2, Alabama at 88 shows this metric, though valuable, has limits, of course.

But, LSU at 126 with new coaches everywhere will be something to see. Can coach O win 8?

    • Bill is the first to acknowledge that it’s only one factor in his preseason SP+ evaluations.

I simply referenced it as a rebuttal to Dinich’s point about returning starters.

It just dawned on me that 2019 LSU was a lot like 2018 Kentucky, just with a much higher baseline.

It’s not a bad year to be a little down for them, though. There are three first-year coaches in the West. They’re on the road in three of their five loseable games (or three of four depending on how seriously you take Texas).

Bless her heart. Usually, her Jon is to over rate the whole ACC. I guess now that ESPN is getting the whole SEC package, she moving on up to saying dumb things about the SEC.

I know sportswriters weren’t math majors, but simple arithmetic is all you need to realize that returning 12 starters means they lost 10.

  4. Ah hell. I’d love to get all “Three in a row, bitches! Gonna be 4! Whoo Hoo!”
But we still have to play the game. I’ll go with the Kirby style. We’ll see y’all, gators, in Jacksonville. We’ll see what you got then.

Trask may be good on the field, but good won’t get the job done. Enter the best defense he’ll ever have to face with Nolan Smith(my breakout player this year) just salivating to get to him and rearrange his body shape. Enter Zeus, aka runaway freight train looking to destroy LB’s. Enter Pickens, the human hook & ladder truck making catches just below the cheap seat level. Enter the O-line whose parents were Caterpillar Road-graders. Enter Kirby Smart, who hates the Gayturds body, mind & soul. Bottom Line: FTMF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before she put this out, every fU fan was spewing this same crap. The only thing she left out was how much of a better coach Mullen is than Kirby, and that the only reason Mullen hasn’t beaten Kirby is because he has been working with a talentless roster.

Since Saban arrived at Bama, only one team has won the national title without being Bama or beating Bama….FSU.

In the past 40 years, no one has won the national title after losing to Bama.

    That game is beyond massive.

    • Damn, that’s an incredible statistic. Who is the last team to lose to Bama but win a national title?

It’s not that amazing if you think about it. About half of all national champions since 1980 have been undefeated. All of the others had no more than one loss. You can probably just as easily say that nobody has lost to Missouri and won a national title. Or Clemson. Or Michigan. Here’s the complete list of teams people have lost to an won the national title:

      Auburn
      Pitt
      Ole Miss
      Virginia Tech
      Texas A&M
      LSU
      Kentucky
      Arkansas
      Cal
      Florida
      FSU
      Notre Dame
      Illinois
      Miami
Alabama (well, that was unexpected: Penn State in ’82)

So the final one kind of made the whole thing moot, but the point stands. That’s 15 out of more than 100 I-A teams at any given time.

I’m fine with this. I want the Gators all puffed up and flagellant when we pop that balloon in Jax this fall.

    • Dear heather, have you ever thought about what people of this earth do with paper…(some highlights), they line their bird cage with paper, also wrap fish guts and other parts with paper, i personally have let my pet dog go poo on that paper, people will actually search that paper for obituaries, ladies of the night and so on…your “but on paper” statement does not hold up today or in eight month’s, if FU is the paper UGA be the scissors…

What strikes me as hilarious is that she doesn’t even include Florida in the list of potential playoff teams. If they are Georgia’s biggest obstacle, apparently we can get put into the playoffs in ink.

Returning production > returning starters, especially in CKS world of mass substitutions. Lots non-starters get valuable reps, building depth.. which hopefully translates well to future seasons.

It’s nice to see Bama and LSU so far back on that list.
