Our daughter’s school has announced a 2 week closing starting on Monday.

At the risk of compromised anonymity, I handle facilities maintenance for a K-12 system in NEGA. We have 36 campuses (7 high schools), close to 40k students and staff. We are opening tomorrow to give everyone a chance to make arrangements, then out next week with another if necessary depending on circumstances.
Based on what we know, what we think, what we see, and what has worked in other places, this is a good plan. Technology allows for home based learning. This gets the occupants out of the building so my staff can disinfect, clean, and make repairs that are necessary that we cannot do when the student population and staff are present. We hope it will keep kids and parents away from popular concentration and will give this particular virus time to run its course.
Better to err on the side of caution here, I think.

My fall back during no football season is F-1 damn if they aren’t cancelling the first race. I suspect the season may be in jeopardy too.

I’m 59 and have survived the moon landing (lots of folks thought that was the end), disco, AIDS, SIDS, Y2K, SARS, Swine Flu, and too any Weather Channel scares to count. I am believing the Bible and common sense will get me through. And listening to Sticky Fingers and Let It Bleed.
Seriously, my Dad is 88 and has breathing problems. He doesn’t need this. Most of the rest of us will be fine,

Mick, the concern for you is that an outbreak that infects other people diverts health care resources so that if you have an unrelated problem, such as gall stone attacks, there will be fewer resources available to care for you.
In my city the local hospital operates almost always at capacity. If 100 additional people showed up feeling like shit thd hospital couldn’t handle them plus the usual needs.

This is absolutely nothing like the Spanish flu of 1918 which had a death rate of 5%. After this is over in a few months we all will be looking back and saying “what the hell were we thinking?” Can you spell Y2K?

There is little doubt that the mortality rate in Italy is somewhat higher due to having a relatively old population. But that alone doesn’t get you from “just the flu” to 5% mortality. The Italian health system is overwhelmed by the number of cases. In some places they are not even treating the oldest or sickest patients because they have to prioritize care for people with the best chance of surviving.
That can happen here too, if we don’t succeed in slowing the rate of infection. The Lombardy region, where the epidemic is hitting hardest, is the richest and most developed part of Italy. It has an excellent healthcare system and more capacity per capita than most regions of the US (or the US as a whole).
