If you’re not doing anything this afternoon…

you could always tune into WSB Radio.

For the last month, the longtime flagship station for UGA Athletics has been replaying radio broadcasts of the Bulldogs’ games on Saturday afternoons. That will continue today as the WSB reaches into its vintage files and recast a classic called by the late, great Larry Munson — the 1987 Georgia Tech game in Atlanta.

Spoiler alert: Georgia wins 30-16 in what was coach Vince Dooley’s last game at Grant Field. But nothing can bring the details back to life like the gravelly-voiced Munson on the microphone…

The games have been edited down to fit in a neat 2½-hour window and air from 3:05 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on 95.5 FM, AM-750, wsbradio.com, the WSB Radio App and your smart speaker.

I can think of worse ways to spend 150 minutes.

Are these old broadcasts archived anywhere for streaming? Seems like they should be.

Way back when I was just out of school, you could buy casettes og Munson’s greatest hits. They went back to some of his earliest Georgia games. They were great around the tailgate interspersed with the latest “Leonard’s Losers”.

I’ve got some of those. I lost the one that had the 1960 (?) Tech game, before Munson. Some old DAWG told a really funny joke about the Tech guy and the Atlanta Theater League, at the postseason team dinner that year. Sure wish I hadn’t lost that tape

Len was the successor to the Voice of “Leonard” on “Leonard’s Losers” football prognostication radio show for many years.

You could almost pick any game – any year – and see the Dawgs beat the Bees. I couldn’t find 87 but did find 1986 on YouTube

      • When I ran the intramural hoops program Peanut Jackson was on the team that won it all. I was telling a young Dawg fan about his play in the South Carolina game and, boom, this game pops up with him at QB.

Man, he’s going up against the Virtual Kentucky Derby featuring all the past Triple Crown winners. Guess I’ll have to record that. The best thing is that bourbon goes well with both of them.

OMG I tried to listen – 40 minutes of ads 4 minutes of the game. Count me not impressed.

Listen on Georgiadogs.com. They cut right to the chase. Never heard any game on WSB online.

BTW, this just reminds me how great Munson was. I could “see” the game because he described each play so well. Poor Scott Howard can’t quit screaming long enough to actually describe the scene.

          • Agreed. Scott tells you just enough to make you wonder what the heck is happening. One of his calls in the Rose Bowl went something like: “Man in motion. Play fake. Sony.” Who’s in motion? Play fake to the man in motion or to Sony? Is Sony the man in motion? Unlikely, but because you didn’t give the pre-snap alignment, Scott, I have a very unclear picture of what’s happening.

I listened to it yesterday on 960 the Ref. It is well worth the time and brought back some nice memories. It was a bit frustrating that we could never quite shake a 2 win Tech team in that game – it wasn’t really decided until very late.

Man I miss Munson. Back in the day Pop and I would leave the truck doors open to hear the game while we were working.

      • I used to talk to him quite a bit at the Y. I remember him in the pool the first Saturday he didn’t do an away game. I wanted to say hi but I decided it was best to leave him alone that day.

Dad and Larry were fishing/bird hunting buddies. I didn’t participate but did get to visit with him a few times. When Mr. Munson’s knees got bad Got Sr. volunteered me to change his toilets out to ADA and put up some grab bars. I wouldn’t take any money but I had him sign a toilet seat lid. It says:
“To Scott: Hunker down Dawgs! Larry Munson” (It hangs over the guest bath toilet.)He hands it to me and says “Hunker Down, get it?” and busts out laughing….

            • Oddly Larry called the 85 Peach Bowl on the radio between Army and the Illini. I just watched it on youtube and forgot that Trudeau threw a 54 TD to David Williams with less than a minute to go and we missed the 2 point extra and lost. Williams was the #1 draft pick of the Bears the next year and Ditka cut him!

Man, this just reminded me how long we’ve been RBU. We had Tate go in the 2nd round of the 88 draft, Worley in the 1st round and Henderson 3rd round of 89 draft, and Hampton in 1st round of 90 draft.

I hoped in my car yesterday in Northeast Florida for a quick errand, and lo and behold I heard the distinctive stylings of the greatest radio play-by-ply man in history on a Jacksonville station. I sat in the driveway for half an hour just soaking it in. It must have been agony for all the handbags down here, including all the “talent” at the station running the broadcast! What a treat in so many ways!
