But muh receivers, a continuing saga

For those of you who would like to drop kick Cortez Hankton right out of Athens, there is this to consider:

Those were the two true freshmen.

Maybe they and Cager (okay, maybe Robertson, too) were just better than the rest of the wideouts.

It is not just WRs, it is scheming. You can work to at least get one guy open. Watch this Video of Matt Ryan’s MVP season TDs and just watch the wide open dudes running down the field:

Most fun NFL season I have ever had. Attended the Monday night game in New Orleans where we handled the effing Saints, the NFC Championship game in Atlanta where we handled the Packers with ease, and the Super Bowl in Houston. That was one fun ride. Kyle Shanahan may have been a jackass, but there is no disputing his offensive mind and his ability to receivers and backs open all over the field. Wish we could channel that kind of scheme in Athens.

Qualifier…most fun NFL season I have ever had until it wasn’t late one night in Houston.

    Pickens is a beast.

    The GT dude started it…

  4. I don’t know. Watch an LSU or Bama game from last year and then watch our guys. The difference is pretty substantial. I know they have recruited some really talented players, but so have we and we aren’t getting shit out of comparatively. Let’s hope it was bad scheme I guess.

That’s great the ball got to them, but the WRs were consistently running bad routes. And I mean awful routes where Jake had zero margin for error.

It’s Hankton’s time to put up or shut up. He needs to teach these guys the fundamentals, and then let their crazy athletic ability take over. Your athletic ability means squat when the QB has no idea where you’re going. Your athletic ability means squat when you can’t get separation.

    • Bad routes and horrible design. I’ve never seen WRs run into each other or get bunched as much as us as the last 2 years.

I mean running into each other….and at times it looked like design…they weren’t getting rode.

Horrible horrible passing trees. Like stuff you drew in school but doesn’t work that way on the field.

I hated everything about our passing design and at least it cant possibly be worse. But we’re a team that can pull it off. Damn lucky to barely give away Coley to a former buddy

Separation is who it is or you’re a 6’5″ wideout who can catch the football…(don’t want the wr coach sent packing), although i do believe with talented student athletes that work hard and film study, coaching should be a little easier, fundamentally speaking….maybe coaching is never easy at that level….the fanfare with which the wr coach was introduced (a steal from vandy)

Hankton should be gone already. You hire a Ferrari for an OC and put bald tires on the car with an inferior WR coach.

All I know is that Saban has ALWAYS had at least one total stud receiver on his championship teams. Not good, not serviceable, not reliable, not underrated, not even pretty damn good, but an outright stud. Even when they still played traditional pro style O. It makes such a huge difference for every other skill player on the field when you have that one receiver who can score a TD on any play where he isn’t properly accounted for.

I think we’ve finally got our first since AJ Green in Pickens, so until proven otherwise, I’m not all that worried about the receivers.

Saban ALWAYS has another threat on the field, be it a tight end, back, or slot that can run a tight route and draw some attention or outright respect from a defense. That helps his stud.
James Cook in the slot, anyone?

I’m hoping that’s exactly the kind of creativity Monken brings to this team with Cook.

But I think we’ve got at least a receiver or two who can be that other threat, and if Zeus is healthy he certainly deserves respect from linebackers. But those other receivers have a much better chance to do some damage with someone like Pickens on the field. For example, how much did Mohamed Massaquoi and Tavarres King benefit from AJ Green?

Malcolm Mitchell and Mecole Hardman were very good, but not quite “that guy.” They were slot guys asked to be the #1, and they did pretty damn good. But add one true stud receiver to the 2012 and 2017 teams, and both of those guys probably have championship rings and get drafted a good deal higher.

By that I mean Malcolm and Mecole WERE that other threat you refer to, they just didn’t have THE GUY on the field with them.

With a solid, veteran O-line Zeus is a threat between the tackles. Pickens is scary good. Newman has wheels and an arm, we think. With a good underneath receiver? This should be fun to watch…..

Really excited about Zeus. If the offense is humming, defenses will not want to see him coming thru the hole. Bull in the china shop.

How good of a WR coach do you have to be to coach Pickens or Blaylock? The measure of a really good WR is teaching Landers how to run a good route and catch a football.

    • Pickens’ route running improved dramatically over the course of the season. Neither he nor Blaylock dropped a pass all season. Both true freshman who must be true prodigies according to you. Let’s hope Kirby can sign a few more of those and we can dispense with a receivers coach!

Hankton has a history of putting guys in the NFL. He is not a problem. Gonna get butter and butter at WR.

Robertson is going to be another monster. Two big athletic WRs and Blayock will go off.
Plus we got speed coming in and a Big 5* TE.

Can smell the cook in’ already
