“Is the time now for Dan Mullen to finally unseat Kirby Smart?”

I’m starting to think Brandon Marcello is straight up trolling us now.

UPDATE:  You’ve got to admit this is a pretty snappy graphic, though.

I made the comment elsewhere, but we, as a fan group, and I’m definitely not immune, tend to have rabbit ears regarding slights against the Dawgs in the National CFB Media. That generates clicks. I think what we’re seeing right now is the National CFB Media finally realizes that it does matter if they get hate or love from Bulldog Nation, as hate brings more clicks. So right now they’re in the mode of just get those clicks in the hopper.

I think you put that thinking in combination with what someone else here said recently about how you can’t just keep picking chalk in the national sports media no matter how much sense chalk makes, and that’s how you get generally smart people like Barrett Sallee picking Florida. They’re literally talking themselves into something different just because it’s different, regardless of how little sense it makes. Andy Staples isn’t prone to this, that’s what makes him the best in the biz. He’s a “prove it to me” type of guy, and that makes sense because he actually played the game in college (though as Florida’s version of Rudy in his own words). People like Marcello, Feldman or Fornelli wouldn’t know what a football is if they didn’t cover the sport. They’re the type of nerds who’d call it “sportsball” if they were like, TV writers or something.

The one thing that’s most weird about everything the last year or so though, is how much love Mandel has given Kirby and the Dawgs when the narrative from the Nation CFB Media has been saying how Kirby is some kind of barely functional idiot. I just don’t understand where that’s coming from, but there are weirdos in every family, I guess.

You said, “generally smart people like Barrett Sallee”. This cannot be true. Sallee went to Auburn.

Barrett went to Auburn and Andy Staples went to Florida.

And yet, even with those handicaps, they’re the No. 2 and No. 1 best national CFB writers.🤷🏻‍♂️

Ugh. Don’t remind me that Captain Obvious is our big contribution to the National CFB Media.

Barnhart’s from a kinda, gentler time. That’s the nicest thing I’ll say about him.

I actually miss having Mark Schlabach writing on the national scene. Dude’s a great writer and a great product of Grady. He was solidly No. 2 behind Staples, and then he truthfully reported about the Arizona BBall Coach’s cheating, ESPN wouldn’t stand behind him, and he didn’t write for something like a year.

I love Maria Taylor. She’s smart. She’s gorgeous. She loves Georgia. She’s pretty much the perfect woman. But she’s not a writer.

Yeah, she’s part of Mickey’s CFB Machine, which makes her part of the National CFB Media, but I guess because I grew up with the papers and whatnot, I still look to writers as my main source of CFB news.

I tell you this, if she’s not the one to take over for Rece Davis on the big desk, I’m gonna riot.😉

    Can’t say I disagree with his conclusion…

“The dam breaks at some point, but for consistent success, beating rivals on the recruiting trail leads to victories on the field. So far Georgia is crushing the opposition but hasn’t been immune to a few hiccups under Smart on the field.

The 12th matchup between Mullen and Smart is Mullen’s best opportunity yet to turn the corner against the Nick Saban disciple. If not, Georgia’s recruiting reign will continue, which will surely translate to more wins on the field for the Bulldogs — in Florida and on the national stage.”

I don’t how you could logically make the argument that THIS is the year MuLLLen has his best chance to beat the Dawgs.

Georgia is the odds on favorite to have the best defense in all of CFB this year.
Trask is more likely to fall back to the mean now that people have tape on him and he won’t have any kind of a running game at all on which to lean.
If the Georgia offense is even as good as last year’s terrible offense, we’ll win 11 games this year. Odds are, they’ll be better even if it’s marginally better.
Florida lost almost a much as the Dawgs, but unlike Georgia they’re not replacing players they lost with blue chip talent.
Kirby may get his ass kicked by innovative spread offenses from time to time (Herman’s tOSU offense in 2014, and Brady’s LSU offense last season), but he has Sideshow Dan the Clown’s number. He has that dude’s tendencies down cold. Honestly, I’m more worried about Chad Morris’s offense at Auburn than I am about Cousin Eddie.

Well let’s see… He was the beat writer at Mississippi State for a couple of years covering Mullen. Then at Auburn for quite a while. So the question of bias is out of the question.

Note that he did not bring up their issues of depth at the O-Line position. Or unproven at the RB position (and they were one-dimensional last year). Or the losses in the secondary and their number 1 and 3 best receivers gone. Yes, Georgia has some pieces to replace; but they have recruited to do that. Has Florida?

This article could have easily been titled “Is the window closing on Mullen?”. Fact is, that if Georgia beats Florida ‘again’ and scores another Top 1-3 class, with the changes in UGA’S QB room, you have to wonder if Mullen has what it takes to ever beat Georgia.

He is their Mark Richt (but not near as nice of a guy). Right now, on paper, I don’t see how they score more than 10 to 13 points. That isn’t too much to ask out of Georgia’s very talented, revamped offense.

Even Will is doing better at 12.2 vs. CKS.

Gus is at 19.9 ppg vs. CKS.

I’m not going to look but I’d bet Sumlin and Swinney have posted respectable numbers vs. CKS. Not because of Manziel or Watson or Lawrence but cuz “coachin’.”

At some point, the handbags will win one. It is just the law of averages. Will they win consistently. Not a chance in hell. After Kirby’s FTMF comment that we all have seen, we do not have to guess how he feels about this game each year. I would suspect there will be a little extra venom this year with all the trolling. I suspect with the defense being what it will be, and the offense expected to be improved and more open, that there will be a beat down of epic proportions on the banks of the St John’s river. I would love to see Kirby staring across the field late in the game mouthing FTMF again.

  8. I like that the ONE advantage Mullen supposedly has over Kirby is his coaching acumen. Yet, Kirby has out coached him each time we’ve played. I swear the media is never gonna let go of those fake punts. FFS, it’s like they forget all it took to get to those games to begin with. I was at the Rose Bowl and had admitted defeat at halftime. Nope! He learned his lesson after the debacle on the Plains in 2017 by stomping the shit out of them in the SEC Champ game. He’s beaten ND TWICE. I feel like Kirby’s was a bit hamstrung the first couple of years because he didn’t have the pieces to make his offenses and defenses tick the way he wanted. Now that he’s been through a full cycle of recruiting and playing only his players, he can coach the way he wants. Maybe I made that last part up…though.

  9. This 92 Dawgs-Auburn game on the radio is a blast! It’s strange to think I’m the same age my dad was on this day. (it’s also fun that the Illini tied Michigan 22-22 that day and Larry kept giving the score'”!

    • I was in Jordan-Hare that night. My wife and I got in from our honeymoon on the red-eye that morning and had a message from friends that they had 4 tickets if we could make it. We put our luggage in the apartment and drove to Greater Opelika since I had been able to sleep on the plane. We’re sitting in the Auburn section in the west upper deck as pretty much the only Dawg fans in the area. When the game was over, we said “Go Dawgs!” and got the hell out of there as quickly as possible. I was so tired on the drive back I don’t remember anything about the ride home.

That game was the one time when it really mattered the football gods smiled on One Play Away Ray.

      That’s what I read too.

If they don’t win this year or at least look very good losing a very close game, the natives will get restless. After all this rationalization the fans are doing for him to be good enough to win without talent, if he doesn’t perform, they’re going to get sick of it. They sound like idiots. They’ll finally have to admit there’s no excuse for not recruiting at an elite level at Florida, and that you have to to win there because you have to to beat Georgia with any regularity now, and you have get past Georgia to do a single thing of consequence.

One of the things that drives me nuts about our media is their inability to provide astute context to analysis. Eight out of the eleven markers on that graphic are when Kirby was a DC, not HC. Transitioning from career subordinate to program leader isn’t accomplished over night and learning opportunities will take place during that period.

As a Head Coach, Kirby OWNS Dan Mullen. Let the national media think Kirby isn’t a great on field coach (a ridiculous meme), because I anticipate Mullen continuing to figure out ways to charge rent for Smart living in his skull.
