Wednesday morning buffet

Please maintain a six-foot distance from your fellow grazers as you read…

  • Tennessee, Tier 3. (h/t 81Dog)
  • On the other hand, UT is back, baby, in part because… wait for it… they’ve got a chance, playing Georgia in November.
  • In case you want a line on the Dawgs’ opening opponent this season, here’s Pete Fiutak’s Virginia preview.  (All I can say is if the Cavs’ offensive line doesn’t step up, it’s gonna be a long day to be a Hoos fan.)
  • “With 1.139 million fans attending Georgia games — home, away and neutral site — the Bulldogs were one of a dozen schools to eclipse the million attendance mark in 2019.”
  • Louisiana has made it okay for immediate family members of college coaches are now officially allowed to be employed on staff.  I wonder who lobbied for that.
  • Another sign of the times:  apparently Southern Cal and Reggie Bush have kissed and made up.
  • Groo:  Curating a day of classic Georgia football
  • Can I just say this is dumb?

Not surprising. The number of cases far exceeds any reported number. I personally know 10-12 people that have tested positive for the antibodies (meaning they had it) yet showed somewhere from no to very mild symptoms. They are not included in any positive case count that i am aware of. It’s not great that orders of magnitude more people have it than any official number suggests, but it does suggest that its not as big of a deal as the media has made it out to be.

So despite the enormous talent and depth advantage at every position, UGA has more risk of injury in a late season game than Tenn. Makes sense.

Michael Wayne Bratton is one of the dumber employees over there on Saturday Down South, so, that’s not a huge surprise.

As for the leading topic, I find it hilariously accurate. The state of Tennessee simply does not produce the kind of football talent needed for the Vawls to be a Tier 1 program, and their admin has done an admirably terrible job the last decade in making the job less than it ever has been. As good a DC as Pruitt is, he has far too much ignorant redneck in him to be a successful head coach of the kind they desperately need. A head coach needs to be able to speak without mangling the English language the way he does every time he opens his tobacco-stained mouth. A head coach needs to be polished, and the only thing polished about Pruitt is his chrome dome.

Is it 1981 or is it 2020?

Times change, CFB has changed. It’s not a sport of ignorant good ol’boys anymore. Pruitt’s lack of polish and ignorant demeanor may be a feature for the dumb hillbillies who wear that awful color, but it’s a bug pretty much in every other aspect.

Could you name a few of those “polished coaches” you are talking about? The list of unpolished coaches has to win hands down, i’m thinking!!!

My definition of what makes a coach polished is not the same as what makes a Fortune 500 CEO polished.

        Speak English well.
Don’t appear in front of the media with dip in your lip.
Basically, if you’re an ignorant redneck like Pruitt, set aside those trappings to be better than that, don’t revel in your ignorance.

Saban is polished. So is Kirby. Corch. Ryan Day. Spurrier was folksy, but he was polished. Lincoln Riley. That’s what I mean by polished.

That’s a damn fine list of games Groo has selected. They are some of my favorite games as a young(ish) Dawg, and I can vividly remember where I was for every one of them except for ’91 Clem and ‘ 09 GT.

I suggested the 1978 Tech game. Buck Belue and Amp Arnold saved our bacon. Great game and the full game is on Youtube.

Maybe the most exciting comeback I ever saw in Sanford. Not the most significant from a rankings standpoint, but for pure excitement, hard to top.Seems like our best comebacks have mostly been on the road: Jax 1980, AU 96, Tech 97, AU 2002, UT 2001, Rose Bowl, 98 Peach, the Drew Brees Outback game. I dont think there was one with a better combo of prestige on the line/bigger hole/more drastic turnaround than the Rose, thought 80 Jax comes close

If you prefer a comeback I missed, I cant fault you, but for me, those were the ones that came to mind fastest.

So wait…..the Vowels playing us in November is better for them because of…..wait for it…depth????

I can see someone making a rational argument about breaking in new starters and needing time to gel, I can even see where if Cade Mays gets a waiver the Vowels May think that they have comparable starting Oline talent to us (and to be fair they do). But to base your projection on “it might depend on who is healthy “ and take the side of the Urnge is ridiculous. Has he been living under a rock the past 4 years? To imply they have better depth at ANY position on the field (much less straight up 22 vs 22 being equal) is absurd.

you hafta love the UT “logic” that they are some juggernaut in November by virtue of racking up all those wins over Vandy, UK, Mizzou + a patsy.

      True correlation = causation.

After looking at the attendance numbers, it again makes me wonder what Georgia Southern and Georgia State are doing in FBS instead of FCS. Is it just ego? It has to cost them a LOT more to run the athletic department at FBS levels vs FCS levels (facilities, scholarships, travel, other sports programs needed to reach FBS status). They have absolutely no chance of ever reaching the pinnacle of the sport. Georgia Southern was thought of in the same elite circle as North Dakota State at one time. Now in FBS they are just a footnote. With all this said, I suspect Tennessee would disagree on my assessment of Georgia State.

It’s because the money they receive from the SunBelt, which may be a pittance compared to the SEC, is so much more than they would receive from being in the FCS.

      It’s not ego. It’s money.

The entire SunBelt conference should be FCS. I guess they make enough money from the conference pay out and the paydays from the obligatory beat downs from the big boys to make it work. The paydays from the Tier 1 schools who need a FBS sacrificial lamb to meet bowl eligibility are pretty good and as Tennessee found out, occasionally backfire.

It’s not just the sacrificial lamb payments. They have a national TV deal. FCS conferences do not.

Southern made a choice, they aren’t going back to FCS no matter what you think they should do. I’m still not sure why anyone cares what level they play at.

That is a hell of a leap from asking the question to being chastised for asking it. Why do I care? I have quite a bit of family (Mom is an alum along with my nephews and cousins) that have/do attend there so I care. My sister and her family still live in the ‘Boro. Multiple friends played there back in the day. When I lived there I attended many of the home games so I have an attachment to them. Hate to see a grand program that Erk built into a national powerhouse get ruined by ego and money. That school exploded in the 80’s in no small part from the national exposure they got from all the championships. That has been usurped by NDSU. Today most outside of the area could not find them with a GPS. I’m still not sure why you care that I care what level they play at.

  9. I lost 20 points on my IQ for skimming that “UT is back” article. Any rational thinker knows that 10rc is 0-4 this year before the season even starts. The only game of those 4 they even have a remote chance of winning is the meteor game.
