Apparently, this is how Ray Goff goes these days:

Is that Ray Goff or Gregg Popovich?

Good for Ray. Hope we can get him back on the field one day for some recognition. He is a DGD.

    • As long as he doesn’t go near current players, coaches, or their playbooks I’m all for it.

He certainly ruined Kirby by way of “proximity.”

Spurrier always lost the week after the cocktail party.

Post game handshake got him every time.

Unfortunately that was all we had going for us. I mean other than he was a really nice guy.

Umm, we had the Thanksgiving Rumble of 1993 at the Joke by the Coke. I was there for that game. It’s the first Georgia game I ever attended live, and it was beautiful.

We beat the shit out of the NATS, and when we went in for a rub it in their face score they started a fight that Ray Goff finished. Literally. It’s probably then we should’ve realized he may not have been the best choice for head coach, but he had the player’s backs. That was something.

He ended the fight by literally wading into the middle of it all when it was a giant scrum of like 70 players pulling players apart. It’s right there in the video. Not exactly the smartest thing in the world for the head coach to do, to get into the middle of it with guys wearing pads and helmets. You’re as likely to get clocked yourself.

What, did you assume I meant he started throwing punches or something? Man, you do a lot of assuming around here.

You literally assumed I assumed, literally.

I remembered it. I just remembered him tossing our guys away.

If “having our guys backs” is throwing them towards the sidelines, he literally did that. Literally.

I think he handled it great. Just wasn’t literally as you described.

As with a great many things, I said what I meant and you saw something different or possibly nefarious, as is your wont, which is why you tend to pipe-in in the way you tend to do in this way. I can’t help that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Same here, they knew that day he was willing to get into the trenches with them…..it would make most fight harder for him, lay it on the line…no plays off.

Remember the game, slinging them around like rag dolls. Goff was a DGD, 5 points away from being undefeated in ’92.

The ’94 game homecoming against Vandy when the team just gave up was when I also gave up on him.

Loved ole Goff though, a damn good dawg!

Yeah, but you want your head coach to have more sense than to get right in the middle of all those huge padded and helmeted dudes throwing haymakers, that’s all I’m saying.

I gave up on Ray as a football coach a couple of games earlier in Bryant-Denny Stadium in 1994. So did Randall Godfrey.

Great guy. Decent recruiter and solid motivator.

Had no idea had to beat a team that was of his team’s equal or better. None.

                • Agree w/ you Chuck, there was something amiss. . . almost like a haze that morning. I dunno. I was a student at the time as well. We started to go to the game, then said, “hey – we’ve been to every game and it’s just Vandy – why not skip homecoming and drive down to the Golden Isles and take a few days off / hit the beaches / come back on Tuesday (?).” We had solidified this decision Friday night before the game after a few pops at a show downtown. Anyhow — we listened to Munson’s call the whole game in the car driving down Hwy 15, 57 & I-95.

He was at his best when we were at our worst. Without the laughter, we would have gone completely nuts.

                  One of my favorites:
“Here’s the punt. It’s a looonnngggg, high. . .SHORT kick!” (Almost swerved off the road we were laughing so hard.)

Then once the inevitability of the unthinkable 43-30 had arrived and Vandy was running out the clock, Munson quipped:

“Ya look down on the field and you just see ghosts and ghouls and goblins just rising up out of the field.” I mean, no better description is available.

Really hated to miss a game back then in person, but the memory, even in a loss will always now be a positive one. Thanks Larry.

Schedule that year was crazy good – open w/ So Carolina (W), @ Tennessee (L), Ole Miss (W), then @ Bama (1 point L) & Clemson at home back to back (W). Vandy (L), @ UK (W). then pasted by UF at the swamp and then tie @ AU and I think end AU’s long win streak(?). Not to mention, COFH was on a Friday. . .I mean Goff had some exciting years even the disappointing ones.

That was great Munson recapture! The scene with your friends in the car listening to Munson spanned a couple of generations of Dawgs. Thanks, made me laugh.

Was that the Vandy game that the black players supposedly took a dive? I read somewhere ( I think here) that the black players were pissed that the students didn’t vote the black candidate homecoming queen. Supposedly all the black students were voting for the black girl, so all the Greek white students passed the word around to vote for a particular white girl. I have no idea if that is true or if that is even the right Vandy game. It could explain a few things, although Goff probably didn’t need any help.

  6. Good for him … Ray will always be a South Georgia DGD. He wasn’t ready to be a head coach and truly was the 3rd choice after Erk and Sheridan. He inherited a pretty empty cupboard.

I found Munson’s call of the shoestring play against Vandy. Those guys aren’t as smart as they seem.

Oh my God… do y’all realize… if Erk was given the job like most people wanted… PAUL “FISH FRY” JOHNSON WOULD HAVE BEEN OUR OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR?

Holy crap, I am this minutes years old in realizing that. 🤢🤮

      • I’ve been saying that for years. Many have said Erk would have junked the TO if he had returned to Athens.

That doesn’t make much sense. In the late 80’s, the option offense in most its forms (Wishbone at Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Notre Dame, the I-formation Option at Nebraska, and the Triple/Flexbone at Hawaii with Fish Fry). Teams were still winning a lot and going to big time bowls with option offenses.

Erk totally would’ve brought Fish Fry from Hawaii to work for him, and thus, a much younger Mark Bradley would’ve found the love of his life much sooner.

          Wow.
