So, you’ve been jonesing to thwack a few commenters over the head with some choice COVID stats?  Buddy, you’ve come to the right place to get your rocks off.  (I only ask that you refrain from personal insults.)

This week, my passions run in a completely different direction.

bronco_vintage_01

After a 24-year hiatus, the Bronco is officially back, as Ford announced (choose one, depending on when you’re reading this)

  • just now.
  • yesterday.
  • a year ago today, which is July 13th 2021, when humanity has emerged from the pandemic chastened and demoralized but determined to band together in preserving itself and the planet upon which we depend for survival.

Not only is the Ford Bronco back, but it’s a beefed-up off-roadin’ machine meant to go just about about anywhere semi-solid land exists. Ford has managed to pack in a ton of trail-driving technology, sure, but it’s also kick-started a new inter-manufacturer rivalry on the level of the decades-long blood feud between the Mustang and Camaro. Fun!

I know.  It’s completely irrational.  I don’t do any off-road driving and the number of days a year in Atlanta when you need four-wheel drive and some road clearance can be counted on two hands.  But it’s bitchin’ looking and you can get a 4X4 for less than thirty thousand dollars!

Me want.  For one thing, this will make a badass tailgater delivery system.  (You gotta love this piece of standard equipmentBottle Opener (Located in cargo area).)  For another, the original Bronco has occupied a soft spot in my heart, so I’m predisposed to like this one.

If this gets added to the GTP Gift Guide, don’t say I didn’t warn ‘ya.

And with that, the floor is yours.

Bronco looks cool. Had been thinking about a Jeep as an extra fun car for the family but somewhat to my surprise my wife actually likes the Bronco

  6. Until a couple of years ago I had a 1976 half cab that my father in law found in a barn, literally. My then 12 year old son and I got it running and driving, cleaned it up and drove it around for a few years. 4×4, 302, 3 on the tree power nothing. When I started looking at a full on restoration it was going to go north of 60k, and that was too much. I ended up listing it on a Bronco blog and selling it for 3 times what I paid for it.

Ahem… (taps mic) …this thing on? Ok, here we go. WEAR A DAMN MASK! Don’t crowd others in public. Go about your business, but only as necessary. This IS a serious illness. We DON’T have a handle on it yet. Helping keep others from getting sick is the American thing to do, world citizen thing to do, Christian thing to do, etc. It’s the RIGHT thing to do. There is no conspiracy, no one is out to get you, it’s not spreading fear for fear’s sake. Just do the right thing and help your neighbor instead of being determined to make this some false stand about your Constitutional rights. Save that for another day. The medical world is catching up but need a little more time. Give it to them.

This isn’t as hard as the politics make it. Life moves forward. This society is not wired to sit at home. Kids go back to school or work go to school from home or a combination tof. People go back to work, some work from home or a combination of. People shop differently now, with much being delivered – that continues.

Businesses are already making changes, noting productivity from home and how they can monitor it. (Would hate to be in the office real-estate business) – because it’s going to shrink. Would hate to be in the business travel business – because this is going to change too.

Testing is going through the roof now. That’s good. A vaccine or vaccines will come late in the year. That’s good. In the meantime, we adapt to the virus, depending on our own personal circumstances and know that the fall months are going to be a little challenging.

The problem? Politics in this country are at a all time low, with plenty to blame on ALL sides, including the media (especially the media). And with it being an election year – the ugliness and finger pointing is going to make today’s noise feel like soothing music. I’m already planning to stay away from all news cycles – even local once we get to September.

If you are in your 20’s and 30’s – the truth is that if you get it – you are likely to have ‘at best’ flu like symptoms and your back at it. But… You could give this to others that it could really harm, even kill. So where a mask when you are out.

If you are in your 40’s and maybe even 50’s – you can get sick – but it’s there is still a very small chance of you ending up in the hospital – but the same answer – wear a mask.

If you are in your early 60’s – really up to 65 or 66 – you are maybe a moderate risk of dying from this. Wear a mask and limit your public exposure.

Above 65? Stay home, if at all possible. Limit your contact with people.

If you already have an illness that this virus can lead to your death – then stay home – or be really really careful, should you have to go out.

Other simple things that you can do…

Use a disposal glove when pumping gas. This, perhaps above most other public forms of contact, has to be one of the easiest ways to contract this virus.

    Wash your hands ” a lot”…

Eat healthier, take care of your body and be smart about your interaction with others.

We all do this – and this virus looks very different.

I don’t care if you are a Trump or Biden supporter – this is just common sense.

I’m looking for a pickup that can tow a Keystone half ton fifth wheel (about 10000 lbs. fully loaded). On paper it looks like a Ford F150 configured to tow 13000 lbs. would do the job, but in the real world, would that work comfortably? Anybody here have experience with F 150s, and does that sound reasonable? I’d rather not go up to a 250 or a Ram 2500 if I don’t have to.

It all depends on the configuration of the F150. Right engine, max towing package, two wheel drive, etc. But 10000 lbs is getting close to the max safe range. The truck can handle it, but it is going to be hell on the brakes, suspension, and engine over time. I would probably opt for the bigger truck if it were me and I was going to be hauling a load over 75% of the F150’s rating more than very rarely.

Depends on how much you think you would travel with it. A half ton truck struggles to tow that heavy and the driving experience is stressful. Maxed out engine/trans and suspension gets old fast. But, if you intend to camp in only a couple of neighboring states, you might be ok.

I would suggest moving up to a 250/350. The 1 ton trucks are a completely different animal than the 150. I think you would be safer on the road too, but this is just my opinion.

        • Speaking from experience. I have a 28′ Jayco (GWV 5400#) that was all an F150 wanted plus some. I ended up upgrading to an 250.
I’m going to plug for a friend that I buy a lot of fleet trucks from and bought the 250 personally as well. Richard with Marietta Truck Sales has a great setup. He buys one owner fleet trucks, cleans them up and renovates the interiors if necessary, then resells them to the public. They are basic trim packages, but I require that because we are outdoorsy and travel with dogs. Vinyl seats and rubber floorboards are easy to get sand out of.
The trucks will be a little higher than average mileage but sell right at wholesale. To date I’ve bought ten or so vehicles from him, I’ve had no mechanical issues with any other than the one our transportation shop started up without refilling the crankcase during an oil change.

Pretty specious legal reasoning if you ask me.

I certainly understand the executive order setting the floor. The rationale that it sets the ceiling for all counties and municipalities doesn’t make sense.

Where I am the county and city both require masks and the Governor hasn’t. No enforcement dispute about it.

          Like

          • Yeah, great idea. Lets allow each city or county in GA to set their own rules on this thing. That way, anybody unfortunate enough to travel across our great state could get stuck with multiple fines, in multiple areas, for multiple offenses they had no idea they were committing (mask in store, mask in parking lot, mask in car if child present, etc. etc.) Hell, some small counties, who are really broke, just might decide to toss folks in jail for a few days so they can run up a tab. No, I think I’ll side with the governor on this one.

Their recommendations also include wearing masks, whereas one of the previous articles you linked said masks are useless. So which scientists are to be believed? Are the mask guidelines part of some nefarious plot?

I don’t think many people are arguing against the goal of having students attend classes in person, it’s just a question/debate about whether or not it’s safe to do so. The AAP is also calling on the federal government to step in and provide funding to make the safe reopening of schools achievable.

          https://services.aap.org/en/news-room/news-releases/aap/2020/pediatricians-educators-and-superintendents-urge-a-safe-return-to-school-this-fall/

My sarcastic point to Derek (which I’m sure he’ll miss) is that SCIENCE isn’t unanimous. Sometimes it’s contradictory. Sometimes it’s counter-intuitive. Sometimes it’s political. And sometimes it’s impractical.

The mask studies are probably the definitive word on masks and respiratory disease. But the authors aren’t the ones at the CDC writing school guidelines or general recommendations. The CDC guys have a broader, but probably less detailed, pool of knowledge.

The Georgia DPH is recommending schools keep 6 feet between students at all times. I doubt there is a school in the state that could satisfy that requirement. Classrooms weren’t designed to be spacious and uncrowded. But those guys aren’t running schools. They don’t have to worry about the practical concerns. It costs what it costs. Figure it out.

Similarly, CDC is only concerned about Covid-19. That’s it. And if you want to stop the spread, then isolate and quarantine. So they can just write the guidelines about staying home, only going out for emergencies, and then staying far away from everyone. But the pediatricians have other concerns, like the complete health of the children. So the AAP is balancing the risk of Covid-19 to children, which is small, against the dangers from being isolated or being in dangerous households. On balance, the benefits of school outweigh the harms of staying home, in their opinion.

I wouldn’t say that any particular guideline is a plot. But people certainly feel pressure. In the media, if you’re not first, you’re last. Remember the headline about Georgia practicing human sacrifice by reopening too soon? It didn’t come true, of course. But so what? The story got clicks. Mission accomplished. On to the next doomsday prediction. And that’s the atmosphere that public health officials operate in. You’re either a hero who is saving lives or you’re a monster who is killing grandmothers. You can’t be a guy who is waiting for data so that you don’t make the wrong decision. Will masks work? Who knows? But better to recommend something that might not work than to shrug and acknowledge that nature doesn’t always bend to our wishes.

Sorry for the wall of text.

WTF – is it possible that things are not nearly as bad as the media and democrats tell us
“Is Florida’s positivity rate accurate? Several organizations that perform tests for the coronavirus show a 100% positivity rate, including many Southwest Florida hospital systems.

The state says it’s working with the labs to make sure they are reported correctly, but the hospitals say they are submitting it right to begin with. So where’s the mistake?

Concern sparked Tuesday because the Florida Department of Health shows multiple labs in the state with a 100% positive testing rate. That would mean every single person tested received a positive result.

Lee Health and other hospitals say that’s wrong. But, at this point, no one knows why the error exists.

Data we analyzed from 110 health care locations in Florida show everyone who went to them tested positive for COVID-19.”

I figured it is easier to post it here. What follows is my personal humble and demoralized opinion after working on our mobile unit outdoors only (1252 COVID-19 tests since April 16th, woohoo). This is not the opinion of my employers. Please note that wearing a mask that is not an N95 or KN95 is in order to protect others and that wearing an N95 protects you and others.
Students, Staff, Teachers and Faculty: N95 or KN95 (protects you and others), Face Shield, eye protection (eyeglasses not contacts). I am planning on wearing zip up coveralls as my makeshift Hazmat suit for teaching/classroom. Coveralls do not have to be pulled off over my head (which would contaminate my face), and can be doffed in the parking lot before I drive home if I wear short and tank underneath. Sanitizer on hands, neck and face after doffing all gear and before getting in the car. Full decon at the back stoop of my house, no outside shoes in, coveralls straight into the wash, and then me straight to the shower… I am asking the kids (if they end up F2F) to do the same. N95 can be stored in brown paper bag, labeled with name, date and time of removal, and kept aside for 72hours until considered clean enough for next reuse, can be used this way 5 times total. So keeping several N95s in rotation is a good idea. Face shields need to be cleaned at end of every day and set aside. Be mindful of what all of this does not cover on your body and be prepared to sanitize and wash those areas (neck, ears, forehead, hands/wrists etc. If you do not have access to N95, KN95, wear at least double layered high thread count cloth mask (only protects others).
I feel more at risk teaching, and believe that all teachers are more at risk indoors in a classroom full of students of any age, than I feel doing outdoor testing. I do not have any resources to offer for acquisition of PPE.
And really all of this is to say, it is TOO SOON to reopen schools/universities for face-to-face instruction. Period.
    Best of Luck.
