I just realized weve hated one coordinator or the other since like 2005. This is the first year I’m not hating on someone in a long time. Lol. That’s why we wont have football. I finally got everything I’ve wanted.
No seriously, my complaints from 2007 to 2016 have been rectified. We have great facilities finally. Were taking strength and conditioning super seriously finally, Which was a huge complaint of mine. Your strength and conditioning coach is an extra coach with unlimited hours. Roster management is absolutely stellar. We have depth and quality in every position. O line is no longer a joke. We have coaches all over that have been head coaches and successful in their own right. We have a quarterback That wants to be pro style, but still can run, another long term complaint of mine, In college football I believe a quarterback needs to be mobile. Instead of just one awesome receiver and everybody else, we have a lot of awesome receivers, I mean the only thing kind of missing as a heisman candidate junior running back.
No, I’m right there with you. I know we rightfully give 3rd and Grantham shit now, but that’s only because Pruitt, Tucker, and Lanning were better than him. And all four of them are better than Soft Willie.
The problem with Bobo was while his offense was mostly great, it tended to be less so against top-10 teams, but again, in the last 10 years that’s more on Richt than anything for poor roster management and just not getting his team up for every game. The less said about Schotty, Chaney, and Coley the better.
Monken, if Kirby allows him to run his offense, we know he’s good. He ha a track record. Lanning is one of the best up and coming coaches in all of CFB. He’s Kirby Smart circa 2008.
Everything else seems to be on a good path. The problems I have almost entirely exist within the B-M leadership and some of the other sports, but the football team looks good. I even think the men’s basketball team should make the Big Dance this year with the way Coach Crean has recruited. I’m still not happy about Coach Stricklin who couldn’t make it out of his home field regular regional (not even a Super) two years in a row, but then again, I hated that we fired Perno so I’m biased.
We need titles and we need much better representation for the Director’s Cup.
I hated on Bobo, and in fact I’m the original Bobo hater green note book guy started all of that, more than I should have, I just had a big problem with nepotism. And OJT. I don’t think Georgia should ever be in the OJT department. Which gets us to…yep, Coley. Bobo got better. But we still had a problem with turtling. We were leading.. had a chance against Auburn 2010. The only solution must to win a shootout. That’s when I started railing about keeping the foot on the gas. Which once again has been an issue with Kirby. The difference with Kirby is his 1st tenant is to be more physical and more physically dominant harder hitting and tougher. So if you’re gonna start grinding on a lead you’ve got to have that physical presence.
I was pretty on board with Grantham but I learned about football myself with him. That 350 pound nose tackle deal does not work. Hes excellent with linebackers. Getting in a coach fight with Franklin is one of the highlights of Georgia football in the twentyfirst century. 3rd and Grantham happens because hes gonna blitz on 3rd down and everybody knows it..lol.
I don’t think I would trade almost any of our coaches for anybody else in the country right now. Although still not big on our receivers coach if hes gonna wear the moniker passing game coordinator. He really sucked at that.
I like it that Kirby, and I’m sure saban had a big influence on this, has not been afraid to hire other guys that have been head coaches or probably will be head coaches. And he builds depth and preparedness in his coaching staff. If monken left today, We got a great analyst sitting there ready.
For other sports I’m in agreement and that was part of my issue with the facilities. It was completely lost in corona , but Georgia was number 2 in the nation probably about to be number 1. number 1 some places in baseball. We might have lost a college World Series this year. We have about as good a basketball coach as we’ve ever had. Hes a clean living guy that loves to coach and has more energy and passion than anyone. He would be my 1st pick of anybody at Georgia to work for. Amazing that we had record attendance in an absolutely abysmal year. Lol.
Thanks to sec network I’ve got to watch more gym dawgs the last couple years then maybe ever. I think she’s pretty solid coach and got mentoring from the greatest of all time. Jury’s out.
But things like a fund raiser to build a bandstand on the practice field really irk me also. I’m glad Georgia doesn’t manage its finances like Tennessee but at the same time I don’t know what you do with 80 million dollars in the bank. That seems just insane especially from a broke unemployed guy. I mean seriously it took 10 years too long to do the lights and sound. And why not drop 5 million on concession in restroom improvements. Strip the whole thing out and re do the whole thing. Really not that big a deal in it’ll pay for itself.
I’ve long said that the quickest and best way to improve not only concessions and bathrooms on the 100-leve but the cramped 100-level concourse is to tear down the current concession stands and bathrooms and rebuild them along the ugly concrete columns that hold up the upper deck. This will build modern bathrooms with an entrance and exit and new modern concessions, and it will literally double the size of the current 100-level concourse.
How difficult would something like this be? How expensive? And how much better would it make our fan experience?
Those coaches you speak of weren’t available during those times…when you get exposed to coaches, their styles/persona i would have thought the past UGA football coach would have had more contacts based on his exposure to the coaching world (trust me, i’m not monday qb here), it just seems Kirby Smart has a rolodex of names and contacts that he has accumulated through time and uses it to his advantage….not speaking after the fact, my curiosity was raised at that time of some past position coaches hirings (OC/DC) i get coaches loyalty and the brotherhood…was surprised at Coach Lannings promotion…so what the fuck do i know about football, I just bleed Red and Black and tell the opposite fan base “if you’re scared, say you’re scared”…..
I didn’t mean Tucker and Lanning should’ve been our DC in 2005 or whatever, I was just saying that the four successive DC’s after Willie were all better than him, even 3rd & G.
It is pretty amazing that for the first time in years, we as a group of fans that tends to fret over a lot and also tends to be hard on coordinators are all, for the most part, pretty happy with what we have. For now. 😉
There was no shortage of people wanting to come work for Richt. He was a poor CEO. Willie Martinez is his best friend. Bobo was his protege. LINCOLN RILEY Want me to come to Georgia. Can you believe that shi!!. So went to Oklahoma and loses national championships. Lol. Instead we got shotty, Who was completely unaware that you only get twenty hour’s contact a week. Kirby is the guy always working the Room. Hes the guy that’s all about making those connections. And we’ve taken a couple of lumps for his OJT, but he sure does rebound like a mother funker. I think his timeout issue on offense is gonna get some help with his 2 new hires.
Mayor….those are the sports closest to my pocket book and heart (count the Red Coats in there)…choosing instead to stay on topic, if possible…sadddddly disappointed with the ad and those three
Oh my God, yes. Or immediately following the 2007 Tennessee game.
I know BVG became a shell of his former self in the last ten years or so as he spent more time bouncing around from place to place in CFB and the NFL, but it Dooley and Adams had just paid him what he was worth following his Broyles Award-winning season instead of being cheap misers (why does Dooley always get a pass for being a cheap AD?), I believe we go undefeated and win it all in 2007 with BVG and those defenders.
Dooley sucks. His greatest years came because of the greatest player of all time and Erk. He was not that great an AD and almost didnt hire mark richt. Amazing what a national championship at Georgia will buy you. I was enamored because I was a young kid , but really looking at history…oh well
I will never say he “sucks” as a coach even though I can’t believe he didn’t win that 1982 National Title. But he definitely is the Bobby Cox of CFB coaches, meaning yes, he should have won more (especially more Sugar Bowls and SEC Titles) but was stopped from doing so by his own failure to adapt.
But he did win us a title. He did hire Erk. He did recruit Herschel. That has to count for something as a coach.
As an AD, he was mostly terrible. Ray Goff? Ron Jirsa? The baseball coach I can’t remember before he swung on Polk? His best hire was Yoculan followed by Manny Diaz and then Bauerle. That Richt is only his fourth best hire really kinda tells you all you need to know.
Then again, McGarity’s hires have almost all been horrendous unless explicitly told by the boosters whom to hire (Kirby and Crean).
I think BVG inherited some great players and he and CMR was able to add some pieces. BVG’s coaching style was one of safety punishment. Once the college game started doing away with head hunting, BVG regressed very quickly.
What happened to BVG? He was spoken of as a sure thing as a future head coach and Richt was smart to hire him after being impressed by how Central Michigan played against Richt at Florida State. I can’t believe that he was too dumb to catch up to modern football. Maybe it was the amount of talent on defense at that time that or he was cursed in Statesboro.
I actually concur with Junkyard in some way. His defenses were a deceptively simple 4-3, much like the Cover-3 D in the NFL. It relied on great DE’s to get pressure as it didn’t blitz much, and it relied on LBs and DT’s to contain the run game, and it relied on the CBs to play both zone and man but not do much against the run. The safeties were there to hit often and hit hard. That part is definitely true.
BVG simply couldn’t adapt to more zone read spread-like offenses. They struggled with running QBs because his LBs were keyed on the RB and the DE’s were rushing. Watching his ND defenses get shredded by running QBs became depressing after awhile.
Yeah, whereas the Saban-Kirby method is to sub like a motha and really make the nickel your base D, BVG didn’t want to get much out of the 4-3. Watching LBs trying to cover slot receivers and scat backs in the flat, or having no one spy or key on the QB… yikes.
Wasn’t Ramsay the coach replaced at halftime of the Auburn debacle at home by the former DC that was demoted to give Ramsay the job?
I’ve tried the block out his short time in Athens. I blame You for the flashback 😇
I have never thought of it that way but you are into something. His era began with Jones and Davis and ended with Rambo’s hit against Auburn.(I know that he was long gone by then but Martinez ran the same scheme). Corch and the Senator are correct too, but while we do run the nickel as our base defense to counter the spread, Saban and Kirby would prefer to keep the defense more or less vanilla to guard against the big play and rely on having better players. Which is what BVG did except out of the 4-3, it still puzzles me that he failed in his other stops, especially Notre Dame which can at least match the talent depending on that years schedule with 9-11 teams they play.
I think a really good UCF is bad for the Handbags. Orlando beats the hell out of Hogtown in every way imaginable. If they can keep it up, they could take Miami’s place as the Northern Alliance.
Sapelo is nice because it’s so isolated. The history of the Gullah and Geechee folks is fascinating. It’s a bit of a strange movie but if you ever get a chance to see “Daughters of the Dust” check it out. It was filmed on St Helene Island but has references to all the barrier islands from there south.
One trip on the menu is to go to the swamp which I have never done. We want to kayak the swamp though. but the Georgia coast isn’t too terribly far for us.
