Chaser.

I’ve gotten a fair number of queries from folks in the last day or so asking if I know why Jamie Newman decided to drop out of the 2020 college football season. All I’ve got is speculation. I know nothing definitive.

And I strongly doubt, outside of a very few number of folks, none of whom have been quoted on the record, that anyone else giving their take on the situation does, either.

All I’m saying is make sure you take anything you read or hear about Newman with a very large grain of salt.

Because the move doesn’t make a ton of sense and there was no explanation, there’s going to be rampant speculation.

Wouldn’t shock me to learn that Newman concluded that Monken preferred Daniels.

    • If there had been spring ball, I’m assuming Newman would have had such a head start that Daniels couldn’t catch him. Without it, they were pretty much starting at the same place with the staff.

Newman was signed before Monken was on campus, and Daniels was signed after. We know Monken approved of Daniels.

However, that observation can not be used as end all be all reasoning. The situation is filled with what ifs and well why did X happen? The Senator is correct, we don’t know at this time and I am not sure the general public will know for some time if ever.

Are you thinking Monken might be thinking more pocket QB versus running QB? I also wouldn’t be surprised if the starting QB is someone other than Daniels.

Also, it wouldn’t shock me if he really had a foot injury and it wasn’t getting better so he decided to completely rest it for a few months.

It wouldn’t shock me if he had a close family member/friend die from COVID and he decided to be cautious.

He always seemed like a smart young man, so I have to assume he had a well thought out reason.

In regards to Newman, it’s a shame the Dawgs are losing him. However, it’ll allow some other young man to step up and be a hero. The D will keep em in the race until the new QB can gain experience and confidence to propel the Dawgs to win the SEC Championship and more.
I still have my eye on the 25 meter target; but, I’m not forgetting that a year from now is a huge game in Charlotte against the tater trash from Auburn on a lake. Having a QB with a year of SEC grind under his belt will be another advantage over Clemson who will most likely be starting a green play caller.
I plan on being around for that. I’m gonna slow my ass down a bit. Piss on all this work.

It actually does make a lot of sense that Newman felt or was told he was losing the QB competition. Time was of the essence in announcing he was opting out. If it became obvious that he was going to be 2nd team, opting out would look like he was a quitter. That would explain the sudden decision. Now he can say it was simply a business decision. ( which it was either way). I would have done the same thing.

Honestly, it’s useless to spend time thinking about it, other than to make fun of those who “know” why he opted-out. Maybe his feelings were hurt Kirby brought in Daniels. Maybe an agent got in his ear and convinced him his hype would never be higher. Maybe he really is super duper scared about COVID-19.

Who knows? On Newman and a small number of people around him know, and they’ll never be truly honest, so we need to move on.

The timing of it all, especially right after the scrimmage, can’t help but speculate that Newman was either losing the battle – or at least not clearly winning it, and decided it wasn’t worth the risk of actually losing it. However, I will emphasize the word speculate because I sure as heck don’t know anything for sure either.

Also, those same folks said Monken was not pleased with the pace at which Newman was picking up the offense and wasn’t shy about letting him know it.

Cleared for contact doesn’t mean what you think it means. No QB gets “contacted” in practice or scrimmage, so Daniels has been taking snaps this whole time.

Cleared for contact just means cleared to play. He will be, by the first game.

However, we shouldn’t assume he’s the guy. Remember, Corch really wanted Mathis and as much as a piece of subhuman slime as he is, he knows great quarterbacks.

Does he really? I would say off the cuff he recognizes a type of QB that will work well in his system. Tebow, Haskins, and Fields are a type. All are big kids that had to be accounted for in run defense, and that opens up some passing opportunities. Tebow was a master and getting a linebacker to commit then dumping it over his head. Just my observation…

Have any of his QB’s done much in the NFL?

Corch knows great quarterbacks no matter the system. And since when does NFL have anything to do with who is a great college QB?

Off the cuff, big guy. My entire knowledge of Urban’s QB’s is a collection of highlight memories and Tebow who I cannot classify as a great QB. TT was a great player in a system that fit him well. YMMV.

Dude knows great QBs, and not only does he know great QBs, he knows great QBs that have that thing in them to be great leaders in big time games, who can win conference and national titles.

Don’t forget Alex smith at utah, led them to a 12-0 season and was the #1 overall pick. Completely agree with your assessment of Meyer as a scum bag who happens to be one of the greatest coaches of all time. I have a theory people have a hard time accepting this because 1) he repeatedly kicked our ass while at Florida and 2) people have a hard time reconciling that a person can be both a horrible human being and incredibly talented. In fact the latter usually helps to foster the former, especially since for some strange reason our society wants to equate character with competence, ie so and so is successful so he must be a good guy (probably due to people wanting to believe life is fair and good people are ultimately rewarded and scumbags punished)

I gotcha. And I won’t argue any of that other than to say when I think of great QB’s, I think of Stafford, Manning, Mayfield, Elway, Aikman, that ilk. None of Meyer’s QB’s seem to me to fit that mold except maybe Burrows who I wasn’t counting as one of Urb’s kids having conveniently forgotten where he transferred from.
Mathis does strike me as Irvin’s type of QB. So does Fields, which takes me down the rabbit hole of “Is Kirby trying to adapt the scheme to more of a spread and recruiting as such but his OC’s haven’t quite caught up?”

Just hard to reconcile the confidence with which many quarters asserted Newman as the best QB in the SEC – heck, one of the best 50 players in college football – and the idea he was in danger of losing the competition to a guy who had a good-not-great freshman campaign at USC, didn’t play last year, and is still rehabbing an ACL.

Entire trajectory of the story is just weird.

I don’t know. Daniels is a full year removed form surgery, 3 more months than Blaylock was. He was #3 QB, one of just 3 5-star QBs that year, along with Fields and Lawrence.

His frosh year at USC was not that bad for a Sr in HS age-wise. 4 of 5 losses by less than a TD, similar to Stafford’s frosh year frankly. He threw for well over 300 in several games including vs. ND.

Started at powerhouse Mater Dei all 3 years if I recall. And he’s a film rat.

Doesn’t matter, the theory that it’s a career / draft hedge makes the most sense. And it just might be the least of 2 undesirable choices (the other being scouts’ last image of you holding a clipboard behind a sophomore who is also a transfer).

Covid is the perfect out, but in Newman’s defense would he have stayed in college as a grad transfer if he (a) knew what 2020 would entail with Covid or (b) even go to Georgia if he thought his 1 reason for staying behind might not manifest because the seat might not be open. At the end of the day, the QB spot (a 1 man show more often than not) is even more delicate when assessing whether you will even have the stage you think you need. This is only magnified for a guy with 1 year of eligibility left.

The interesting question I have is how are you supposed to manage a QB roster in the modern age. Georgia can get away with the fish culling approach more than 99% of other teams. But the argument for a cleaner pipeline of succession is not without its merits…..until you get one that doesn’t work out. Still though, it’s not like you can’t miss on the shotgun approach either……and I do worry it leaves us in a predicament of oscillating between an over-full cupboard only to have no depth the next year when you have an exodus.

    • Corch Irvin Meyers, New USC Corch (2021)

Nope, because when you try to do it that way, you end up with what happened to TAMU post-Manziel and what happened at Georgia when all we were left with in certain seasons were Joe Cox or JoeT3.

Kirby’s way is the best way. You load-up on talent and let that talent shake itself out by giving everyone their shot in practices before the season starts to win the job, regardless of position.

This is why the “Fields never got a shot,” people are making ridiculous, emotional arguments instead of being rational about it. You don’t get a shot in games, you get your shot in practices. That’s how it works.

Lets all root for both, and if I had to pick a favorite I’m going with Doc Holliday. Only because I kinda like the USC fight song and he used to be there. But I like the heart Mathis has, I’m pulling for him too.

This is an entertaining blog.Newman’s “inherent” lead came from being on campus since January and, as the next line in the story explained, JT Daniels not being completely cleared. Daniels has 5 years of experience in the Air Raid offense (granted, last year was mental reps), and I’ve said several times since he arrived it was a matter of time before he took over —
I told the Jax radio show host Daniels was going to be starter by the time UGA played Florida, anyway. Daniels was essentially Monken’s choice after Newman opened the door via a Zoom disconnect (See story link). Mathis has big upside, but no one is close to operating in the offense like Daniels. I will keep reading this blog, I like it, even if the author likes to pick and choose his favorites (and take shots, haha). That’s normal, we all do the same. Makes this blog no less fun. https://www.dawgnation.com/football/georgia-uga-jamie-newman-offseason-kibry-smart-newman-bust-competition-daniels
