Your Daily Gator is jealous. Again.

You want to know how obsessed our poor ol’ DG is?  Well, this question appeared in today’s The Athletic’s Florida mailbag ($$), which is, presumably about all matters Gator.

What is Georgia doing to dominate recruiting when it hasn’t had the recent success of the Gators? What sets the Dawgs apart? What is Kirby Smart willing to do that Dan Mullen isn’t? — Kevin S.

The answer is pretty great, especially this bit:  “Maybe you’re actually a Georgia fan who just conned me into spouting off some pro-Dawgs stats, in which case, that’s some pretty savvy mail-baggin’.”

Having played in the conference, and been All-SEC at that, has to be a big advantage for Kirby when talking to these recruits.

I think he relates well to these guys. If he can smack his former employer in the mouth and win a natty we might really get it going in Athens.

Not to mention sounding like he has something between his ears other than mash potatoes when it comes to talking about COVID-19.

I dropped my subscription to the Athletic, so can’t see if there is more context or what the full answer was but in any event, I presume that guy must’ve defined “recent success” as “MNCs between the period of 1996 and 2008”??? Seems like kind of a tortured meaning to me…

Yeah, one of the Gator fans complained about his answer, but every other person backed up the answer by say obviously Georgia has had more success recently. They even pointed out Florida hasn’t won anything since 2008.

I know what it’s like to go into JAX with a 3 game losing streak, but getting salty with a beat writer never works.

This is where the #1980 insults start to ring a bit hollow, eh? 2008 was 12 years ago. 1998 was 22 years ago. 1990 was 30 years ago. They all acting like that’s not a long time too when nary one of them has played in the CFP.

        • stoopnagle

…I almost forgot but the other rival has beaten us 2 times since their last title a decade ago. So…

The one giant thing about about 1980’s WLOCP is UGA was behind in the score, UGA was behind the down marker at the 8 yard line…”we get a block from behind”, just believe that victory helped propel UGA’s confidence the next week clinching the title at the barners and the annual scrimmage the week after that…#FTMF

Thanks for that. I was racking my brain on the ‘recent success’ comment.

Recent success of the Gators? [FILE NOT FOUND]

For as much as your typical Gator fan likes to make fun of 1980 being so long ago, it isn’t like football recruits remember the glory days of Timmy Tebow and Steve Spurrier, either. Recruits were 5 or 6 years old when Florida won the 2008 title. Since then, it’s been a decidedly mixed bag in Gainesville. During a current recruit’s football career, Georgia has been even against UF in head to head matchups including dominating the last three straight meetings. Georgia has appeared in three straight SEC title games, winning one and also advancing into the playoffs (something Florida has not done) and reaching a national title game. Simply put, recruits have seen Georgia succeed. They’ve heard that Florida used to.

They are absolutely convinced that CKS is paying players. No way he could actually out-recruit cousin Eddie.

    Maybe, just a thought . . . Dan Mullen is a drip?

  8. The entire response made me smile. It definitely was written without a typical Gator Pravda spin. It was an almost “Gator fan, you must believe college football only started in 1990” response. It was a member of the Gator media admitting the worm has turned in the rivalry.

Maybe Kirby himself submitted the question

Unpaid plug for the Athletic, but I let my subscription drop and was offered to renew for $1 per month. I really only care about GA football, but $12 a year was a no brainer. The rest of his answer was worth $12 to be honest. It just baby seal clubbed the question with GA stats since Kirby arrived in Athens. Pure joy to read and pure poison for the gator fans to read. He finished up by saying UF currently ranks 7 to our 11 in recruiting. He knew enough to end the beat down with a positive for his readers.

It was kind of him not to point out that Georgia has lagged behind all of our rivals in recruiting rankings before the season each year, Kirby does his work with flips and late commits. LOL

    • Biggen

I did this last year and will do the same when it runs out again.

I agree it’s worth the price, which I think is even lower today than it was originally. Seth E is a very good writer and we are lucky to have him on the UGA beat.

Replayed 2019 UF game yesterday. Being in my 70’s it was like seeing it for the first time, except I knew who won. Say what you will about Trask, he is very accurate passing the ball. When they came down the field in 3 or 4 plays to score, I was worried. UF remains the biggest challenge in the East for the foreseeable future, as long as we don’t have a total FU like SCU.

Uhhh….how about getting out on the road and recruiting instead of hanging out at Lake Oconee.

Well, gator fans, when recruits still remember that you lost at home to a 1-AA school in recent memory, most consider that a negative for the program.
