Talk about the weather

Seth Emerson ($$) explores the possibility of a regression by Georgia’s defense this season and finds Kirby discussing an old friend.

“If you are scoring a lot of points people are playing you different. We were in a lot of tight ballgames last year it seemed like,” Smart said. “Probably some weather conditions were favorable for the defense in terms of tough weather conditions (we had) to play in throughout the year.”

Echoes of Mark Richt trying to explain Georgia’s struggles in Jax…

I guess if you want to see continued excellence from the Dawgs D this season, you’d best hope for a well timed monsoon or two along the way.

Whelp, it is 2020 so there’s that.

I have not read seth’s article yet but I don’t think there is any doubt that our defense was helped immensely by the number or backup QBs we played and the bad weather in some of our games. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised of regression based on those two factors alone

Hmm. Here are the backups Georgia faced:

Brian Maurer (who started because Tennessee was 1-3)
Hilinski/Joyner (in their only loss, and both looked about as capable as Bentley)
Lynn Bowden (which probably helped the numbers at the margins, though I’ve never been particularly impressed by Terry Wilson)
Kyle Trask (a marked upgrade over the starter)
Powell/Bazelak (who didn’t perform any worse than Bryant had in the previous couple of games and would in the next couple against worse defenses, but this one also probably helped the numbers a little)

Perhaps more importantly, the four best teams they played outside of Florida had their starters, and Florida was better off without theirs.

We substituted 4 out of conference opponents for 2 SEC opponents. That will make our daverage defensive stats worse.

Our defense will be it’s own monsoon. I am drinking gallons of the Kool Aid. Right now and until the Dawgs break my heart. We have an unhealthy relationship and I am ok with that.

  5. I’d counter this by saying that Azeez didn’t really come on until the back half of the season. He is going to be a Jarvis Jones like pass rush terror this year.
