The luxury of depth

I am in awe of this attitude.

You’re playing the eighth-ranked team in the country a week after you struggled a little to put away a weaker team and you choose not to play one of your best defenders because you don’t need him?  Holy Mother of Crap, that is one monstrously sized own of Auburn.

I thought I saw him on the sidelines with dreads and a clean jersey when he was high fiveing a defender after a big play.

I was watching a guy from 247 discuss Smart’s defense, noting that they are so loaded, they can basically mix and match personnel packages to match up with teams week-to-week. They really do have an embarrassment of riches, and everyone returning from last year only made it that much richer.

I also noticed that Stokes was not on the field fairly often against Auburn. I thought maybe something was wrong with him, but no, it just seems they used him situationally. And that’s a guy who was one of the top two or three corners in the league last year. That’s crazy.

All the more hungrier this week.

    Where was Walter Grant?

Wouldn’t the mother of all trolls be if a couple of days before Halloween Kirby said, “We’re really looking forward to the open date on Saturday followed by Florida because we’ve got a few players dinged up and we need them ready for the stretch run against Mizzou, Mississippi St, S Carolina, and Vandy.”

  6. I get the impression Kirby isn’t a huge fan of Gus

It is nice to be able to play your healthiest players and not worry about a drop off. If you have 2 (or 3 or 4) guys of roughly equal basic talent, you play the healthiest. Nice situation to be in.

  8. My thing with Kirby and HIS coach speak is that he’s said this about other players and they were out half the season. I just don’t think he’s always straight about the severity. At this point, it seems his answer is always “they could play if we need them”, no matter how serious the injury. I don’t have a problem with it, though.
