This week, in net yards per play

I tracked the net yards per play for every team in the SEC last week and I think I’ll keep that up for the season, as I find it to be a useful indicator, although we’re still working with a small sample size after the second week.

Here is the conference order, by net yards per play, with the offensive ypp and defensive ypp, respectively, in parenthesis.  (Stats via

  1. Alabama:  2.64 (7.79; 5.15)
  2. Florida:  1.95 (7.80; 5.85)
  3. Mississippi State:  1.75 (6.45; 4.70)
  4. Georgia:  1.30 (5.12; 3.82)
  5. Tennessee:  0.55 (5.87; 5.32)
  6. Kentucky:  -0.11 (6.20; 6.31)
  7. LSU:  -0.21 (6.03; 6.24)
  8. TAMU:  -0.22 (6.23; 6.55)
  9. Arkansas:  -0.35 (4.20; 4.55)
  10. Ole Miss:  -0.72 (7.39; 8.11)
  11. Missouri:  -0.96 (4.93; 5.89)
  12. Auburn:  -0.97 (4.50; 5.47)
  13. South Carolina:  -1.78 (4.51; 6.29)
  14. Vanderbilt:  -3.16 (3.86; 7.02)

If the order seems a little different from your expectations, filter it through turnover margin.

  • +3:  LSU, Tennessee
  • +2:  Alabama, Auburn, Georgia
  • +1:  Arkansas, Ole Miss
  • 0:  Vanderbilt
  • -1:  Florida, South Carolina
  • -2:  Missouri, TAMU
  • -4:  Kentucky, Mississippi State

And a few random observations:

  • Only five teams on the plus side seems to be an early indication the SEC is a top-heavy league.
  • Turnover margin completely explains Kentucky’s season so far.  And why MSU is 1-1.
  • Tennessee has played nos. 11 and 13 on the net ypp list, is +3 in turnover margin… and has a net ypp that’s less than half of Georgia’s.
  • Auburn’s a mess, despite a +2 in turnover margin.

Georgia’s defense didn’t do aubrun any favors in the YPP metric.

Small sample sizes indeed. Auburn was fine after week one. Georgia demolishing them makes the number look a lot worse. Georgia themselves is trying to statistically bury that first half against Arkansas. The crazy thing to me is how far ahead of everyone Georgia’s defense is at this point. Well, that and the closest team through two games is Mississippi State.

One of those defensive YPP numbers is significantly better than the others.

    Some YPP oddities:

Ole Miss’s offense was 1.3 yards per play better against Kentucky than Auburn’s. Auburn’s offense against Arkansas is going to be interesting.

Arkansas’s defense allowed 4.35 to Georgia and 4.76 to MSU – a week after MSU averaged 8.32 against LSU. Arkansas’s defense through 2 weeks has been legit. If FF can avoid turnovers and convert some 3rd downs (big if), Arkansas could be 2-1 after 3 weeks.

Conspiracy theory. Gus gets fired. Laner slides one state over to take the reins of WDE.

The Miss State number jumps out at me. And Arkansas must have a pretty good defense after all.

Senator, there are 7 teams on the plys side of TO margin, not 5. 8 teams that are even in TO margin or better. That is unless I’m reading this wrong.

The Dawgs D is really good. Even though they’ve played nos. 12 and 13 in offensive ypp. Of course the low ypp of the barners and hogs could be due to playing the Dawg D. Its just too small of a sample size to say for sure. I can say for sure the Dawgs D has been a ton of fun to watch and has been dominant these first couple games. I think it will take a offense like LSU had last year to make this defense look average. Tyson Campbell is starting to play up to his 5 star potential and he played absolutely phenomenal Saturday night. If he can keep that up, along with Stokes doing his thing, it will be really difficult to pass on this defense. We’ll probably need to bracket/double team the fu TE but that can be done without giving up anything else with Campbell and Stokes playing like they have. I can’t wait til we play the lizards. And how great would it be if we were undefeated going info that game. I think we’ll have more than a punchers chance against Bama and should handle the vowels and kats as long as the mail man keeps progressing.
