Cinderella, Cinderella

Shorter John Feinstein:  The reason they’re not expanding the CFP field to eight this season is because Alabama was pissed off that UCF claimed a national title in 2017.

  2. I was dumber after I read that drivel. UCF wasn’t in the playoff in 2017 because they didn’t play anyone in the regular season. Just because they beat a very disinterested Auburn team in a NY6 bowl doesn’t mean they would have had a snowball’s chance in hell against a
Clemson team that was the #1 seed that year.

    Hey Senator honest question here.

I think I’ve read where you don’t mind a team having a weak schedule when they are undefeated. I think Clemson was the team you were referring to, but it may have been Ohio State when they lost to VT but won out.

That being said do you mind if UCF goes into the playoffs? Or you just against the expansion of playoffs in general regardless of the cases being made?

FWIW, I like the 4 team playoff. I don’t want it any bigger, last year should have shown why.

Not to speak for the host, but, I think the general consensus is that there never really is more than 3 or 4 teams that have a legitimate shot at surviving the “tournament”.

    • Honest answer: I don’t think you can simply define the quality of a team by its strength of schedule.

I don’t have a problem with a qualified G5 team in the CFP. “Qualified” being the operative term. UCF 2017 had a fantastic offense and a subpar defense. I don’t think they qualified as one of the four best teams in college football.

Feinstein wants a Cinderella team in the tourney. I don’t.

      • My BIL told me long ago when he ran his blog that was basically about busting every play off formula, that people want playoffs specifically for that reason – Cinderella and the only chance in heck their school may make it to a championship.

Thanks for the reply. I guess Im the same, no Cinderella but if you are legit you deserve a shot.

    • The Mountain West TCU team that finished #2 in the AP and #3 in the Coaches polls in 2010 behind Auburn certainly would have been playoff worthy in a 4-team playoff scenario. Other than that team, I don’t think there’s been a playoff-worthy Group of 5 champion … yes, that includes the Handbag rejects from Orlando.

I know Feinstein’s piece is pot stirring, but Bama complaining about somebody “claiming” national championships is throwing stones from a glass house.

As all mythical championship tales go, ucf’s 2017 season evaporated like fairy dust, they have a knight, they needed a prince, the evil strength of schedule did them no favors and when it came time to fit into the magical slipper, ucf was to small….enjoy the undefeated season, they are hard to come by….

It was only Bama that was pissed? I’m pretty sure the entirety of college football was tired of them within weeks. Bill Connelly lobbied hard for UCF in the playoffs – and even he got sick of their fans quickly. They attacked him for not lobbying hard enough.

Duke’s AD’s son is the UCF AD. Feinstein is a Dookie. White lost all credibility; he might be the most mocked guy in college football outside of Scott and Emmert.

So this is just Feinstein saying what White would say if he had not permanently branded himself an administrative clown.
