Alternative reality blues

Boy, here’s a Vol fan jonesing for moral victory praise:

Matt: How about that for a statement game from the Vols, pal? You’ve been doubting us for months. We were beating top 3 Georgia on the road for 2 quarters, and we just couldn’t close it out. Respect us!

Tory Stephens

Tory: The Vols still haven’t won a game of significance under Jeremy Pruitt. I don’t know any other way to look at it.

If losing by 23 qualifies as a statement game, I have to wonder what Tennessee’s message was.

    ” …just couldn’t close it out…”
That seems like a statement you make when you come close in the closing minutes of a game…not going scoreless in the second half.

It’s like a lot of people watched a different game (or didn’t watch at all and just saw the halftime score), because Georgia more or less dominated the entire game. A bad snap and a bad fourth down call were the only reasons Tennessee wasn’t down at least 17-0 at the half. Yes, I’m convinced they never score an offensive TD in the first half if Georgia doesn’t set them up at the 36 and give them some confidence.

Make no mistake, that was a devestating loss for UT. Not just on thr field, but for their program as a whole. And if you don’t agree, just look at the top recruits (Mims, Mondon, etc) we were really fighting them with, and where they are leaning today.

All off-season UT has been pushing the narrative that they have closed the gap on us and Bama, all while touting their consecutive win streak. Now, all that is up in smoke with yet another 20+ point loss to a big rival, and Pruitt has yet to beat us, Bama or UF. UT also is 0-33 in their last games against top 10 ranked opponents. That…. that’s not good at all.

I do think UT is in a better spot now than previously under Jones, but when it comes to recruiting top flight recruits, UT still lags behind us considerably.

Doing the ut math concept here, its not the 23 point margin , it’s that they lost by 3 scores, 3 being less than 23 = moral victory….we now return you to your local sesame street programming

    • Bama is going to destroy them as well. I’m betting they’ll be competitive with the Handbags but probably won’t beat them. I haven’t looked at the most recent recruiting fall-out, but I think the Three Star General is going to be coming up empty on those blue chips.

Thanks, 3rd! That’s some good reading right there! Made me smile!

  3. If losing by 23 to the #3 team in the country qualifies as a statement game, losing by 27 to the eventual national champion must mean that the 2019 Dawgs were absolute worldbeaters.

I believe UT fans also claimed a moral victory after our victory over them in 2019. They did the same about their 2019 Bama loss. Let’s give them Moral Championship rings.

A guy who works for me on a couple of projects and is a Tennessee grad reached out to me yesterday. He was very complimentary of our defense. He knew they were gifted 14 of their 21 points. He said he knew the dam was going to break as Guano kept getting pressured.

I think reasonable people would say the talent gap between the programs has continued to expand over the last 3 years, and they have Jim Chaney to boot.

  6. I guess the moral victory is the Vols being involved with the Georgia offense messing up the Georgia D’s points allowed per game average!

  7. This is some Clavis level delusional Tennessee bullshit. UT is damn lucky that didn’t get handed a fiftyburger.

Stetson had just run for that first down, and then when he came back in, threw it in the endzone to try for 50. I wonder what that was all about? Was Kirby wanting to run up the score for style points or had the Vols done something to piss Georgia off during the game…or had JP maybe mouthed off?? It just seemed unusual to me for Kirby to not just run out the clock..I think there were a couple of minutes left. (BTW..I wanted that 50)

    What a loser.

And that’s trolling. I mean it. What a frakking loser!

BEAUTIFUL. You know these are the same toothless wonders who were really talking shit back in the 90’s. They can eat all of it now for as far as I’m concerned.

And they’re closing the gap, y’all! They lost by 26 in ’18, 29 in ’19, and just 23 in ’20. Pruitt is making progress!

  11. I mean, I do think it’s a statement that Tennessee is considerably better and played us considerably better than they have for the most few years. I also think there’ll be our biggest threat moving forward because they are recruiting better and they are back to battling us for the same recruits. I still remember UT’s NC team having 7 starters from Georgia.

That said, they still have a ways to go and this guy did lose me with his “we just couldn’t close it out” bit. This wasn’t a Georgia vs alabama ending, buddy. You didn’t score for the ENTIRE 2nd half.

Bragging about a 23 point loss means you’ve essentially conceded your team will never achieve parity with the program that issued said 23 point ass whopping. This is a good thing.

That being said, I think there’s some unconscious dawggrading here. Auburn, tennessee and dare I say arkansas might end up being decent to pretty good. Stomping the crap out of the #7 and #17 teams is the tell tale sign of a great team. Also would not be surprised to see tennessee finally beat florida.

LOL – Are they seriously calling it a “statement game” because they led at halftime by four points in a game where Georgia gifted them 7 free points on the second snap of the game? After the ball that was snapped into the end zone for the free points, Georgia outscored Tennessee 7-0 in the first quarter and 17-14 in the first half. After the ball that was snapped into the end zone for the free points, Georgia outscored Tennessee 44-14 for the rest of the game. I mean, congratulations to the Volunteers for taking advantage of the free points, and I sincerely congratulate them for the way they were able to stop Georgia’s rushing attack through three quarters. But… I’m sorry, y’all got your asses kicked. That’s the statement you made.

  15. Let them build their house upon that rock…losing by 23 as their statement game that their program has turned a corner…truly it’s better than 45-0…does anyone else hear that old SNL skit Lowered Expectations playing?
