Free agency!

It’s here.

It’s the right thing to do.  It also means we won’t have to hear any more pained excuse making for a waiver, or see kids like Luke Ford get screwed over by a technicality.

Use it wisely, kids.

Luke Ford sat so others could play.

Seriously though, if the NCAA were smart (they’re not) they would also ratify NIL allowances for the same day to head off the P5 conferences telling them to frak off.

“How you going to keep them down on the farm…” Well it will be interesting to see how this affects our depth (and Alabama’s) in the coming years.

If there’s one area where I think Smart will exploit every available advantage, it will be in roster management. He’ll probably use it to fill gaps and cut loose guys like Cox who aren’t worth the trouble.

It’s going to be even harder to groom QBs to replace two-to-three-year starters, though..

I’m guessing we’ll lose some depth guys we hoped would be studs, and replace them with G5/low P5 studs everyone thought wouldn’t be that good coming out of HS.

Yeah but look at how much better Florida’s defense is with Cox. They could easily be 76th instead of 75th out of 76 active teams.

We’ll still hear the tortured excuses for transferring. Only now, it will come on the second transfer.

Well it’s nice to see there’s even less consequences for decisions and less incentive to stick it out …

I know I know “ but the coaches !!” At least they have to pay a buyout when they bolt.

    • MGW

No, the coach’s new school has to pay a buyout. The coach gets a new, much larger salary. Nothing wrong with that, but the days of anyone involved doing it “for the school” are long gone. Now the kids just get to participate in making self interested decisions with everyone else in a slightly more meaningful way.

We’re fortunate to have a coach who happened to play here and loves the place, but if the timing worked out differently he could just as easily be at LSU, Auburn, Florida or wherever else kicking the crap out of us and whatever Tennessee, Bama, or friggin Washington State grad coach we had at the time.

It’s tradition and passion and all that to us fans and alums. For about 95% of the administrators, coaches, and players, it’s purely business.

Off topic but I just saw the ani k Saban has tested positive for covid 19. They Zak’s staff informed him and he left the facility.

  8. Joshua Walker

Saban has Covid. So does Byrne. Somebody get old man Saban in a respirator pronto. As long as the players are still available for us to whip their asses, I don’t have an issue

  9. 69Dawg

He obviously got the idea from Sideshow Dan. Funny Alabama fans are blaming Lane LOL.

Time to hire a couple of analysts to recruit the good players from lesser teams. Tampering, shmampering.

Just a guess but Bama and UGa don’t have the same off week until 12/12 talk about blowing up the SECC game.

    • Corch Irvin Meyers, New USC Corch (2021)

They won’t cancel the game because Saban has covid-19.

      • Got Cowdog

They’ll quarantine him in the booth, then when UGA goes up by two scores there’ll be a muffled “POP”, a puff of smoke in the booth, and a “Hey, where’d he go” by Danielson…

I cannot start to fathom the unintended consequences of this rule change. The rich will get richer and the bottom tier will get abused.

    • MGW

Bingo. But I think the middle tier will do quite well too. Studs will leave the basement dwellers to show out on a bigger stage. But UK/Mizzou level teams won lose their best players very often. On the other hand, the “barely lost the QB competition at Bama/UGA” type kids will go straight to obvious starting situations at UK/Mizzou level schools when there isn’t one available at other top tier schools. That solid linebacker/DB who loses his starting job to the freshman phenom will go to those places too.

New coaches like Kiffin will thrive because those antsy kids at other schools will know starting jobs are realistically up for grabs at most positions.

Its easy to speculate what its going to do. But the majority of current transfers are P5 to lower level (G5/FCS) transfers. Which means the bottom may gain from this. Then there are lateral transfers G5 to G5 or P5 to P5. The fewest in number are those transferring up. I dont think much is going to change from what we are currently seeing. There will be a larger volume, but the general trends will look the same.

      • Sounds like you guys are discussing the free-agent situation in MLB, but you’re actually talking about college football.

Sad, IMO. We already have professional sports. We really don’t need any more.

  13. Just cancel. If we win, that’ll be their excuse. If we lose, I’ll probably go into hiding because Georgia fans will be insufferable.

  14. I’ve been a supporter of this.
It’s another example of something every other student on campus can do. I only hope the 2nd transfer will require a player to sit a year with NO exceptions.

Every other student on campus can transfer to a third school without waiting a year.

      I don’t understand the rationale.

      • My thought is that this is a reasonable compromise between unfettered free agency and forcing a student-athlete to stay somewhere he or she doesn’t want to be.

        I get your point.

I think I just heard Sabin has the Covid….

If a kid didn’t want to play for Bama in the first place, I don’t know he’ll be any more eager to transfer there when he lands 3rd on the LSU depth chart, and not sure Bama wants that guy. Just doesn’t feel like this will be like Steinbrenner and the Yankees, just a better free market.

Also heard rumor on ESPNU this morning about the P5 breaking away from the NCAA.
