Game day post, battle of the Titans edition

I think Saban’s coaching tonight.  I don’t think it makes any difference.

My head says that if Georgia can concoct an effective passing attack, it wins the game.  My heart says it doesn’t matter; it’s in Georgia’s DNA to lose to Saban’s Alabama.

Speaking of intangibles, what’s the effect of nothing really being on the line, ultimately speaking, in this game?  It’s not the SECCG.  The national title isn’t at stake.  The loser, unless there’s some sort of a stunning blowout, will still be favored to win its division.  These two should play each other again.  Does that affect the way Kirby coaches the game?

It sure would be fun to hear the pundits’ take in the aftermath be “hey, maybe you can still win a title with great defense”.

My heart says Alabama 35 Georgia 31.  My head is telling my heart to shut up.  What say you?

They’re not the new Florida or anything. But it’s something. We need to beat Saban’s Alabama this year.

I think your position is spot on. It’s just another week. I’m not nervous because if the dawgs do get beat, then there would be a good reason for it. With “win all the games you’re supposed to win” mentality, this would be a game where a loss would be just that, a loss.

I know I am excited to see the “benchmark” of where out team is right now. Safe to say, they will get better with each week, already have.

I’ve said all summer we lose a close one tonight and then hammer them in Atlanta in December. Still think that, 31-28 bad guys tonight. But 45-17 in December.

I hope you are correct and the Atlanta game is the one that matters, just ask LSU about winning the regular season game or Auburn beating UGA and Bama in the regular season.

ole miss has scored 0 on arky at the half. They had 21 against bama. We had 17 on arky at the 1/2. Probably means nothing but I think the arky win is worth more than we thought at the time.

Initially I had it Dawgs 73 – Bama 7. But then after viewing the sorry performance of their two previous opponents I adjusted my prediction downward.
    Dawgs 49 – Bama 31
Besides, that score was already taken today. Piss on tech and the Gumps.

  16. This game may not have huge implications but it’s still the biggest of measuring sticks. Still, I believe Kirby has always done a good job of not making a game too big. He coaches them to play well and win but I’ve really rarely seen his teams play tight.

He can be pretty emotional and serious but what he said about halftime of last week’s game is another reason I believe he gets it. He has a pretty good grasp on where this team’s collective and individual heads are. He seems to know how and when to press. Tonight would be the perfect time to display that. Imo, talent and coaching are about as even as it gets. Bama’s only advantage is the history being hung over this program’s head. It’s a new game and a new season, though.

My eyes say bama’s D is porous and the QB has not been pressured. My heart is with the senator. My guess is the refs decide the game. If they let both teams play Georgia wins, if they call it like a typical bama gone game well………..

  21. I kind of laugh at the Saban factor and whether him being in the sideline matters. I don’t think it does, the horses run or they don’t with their roster, I don’t see Saban as being a master of adjustments or anything, being very fortunate twice with subbing in back up QBs to pull out wins against the Dogs. In both games, unfortunate play calling and injuries tipped those games to Bama’s favor in the final frames. I have stood by and got ridiculed by friends in the wake of the National Championship game that I didn’t think Saban was “brilliant” in going with Tua. They were desperate and it just turned out that it worked. A poor offsides call on Simmons and a shoestring tackle that never was on Tua and Bama and the Saban mystique are wiped away. Good recruiting and some luck is all that is, not in game coaching adjustments. Auburn games that Nick has lost are prime examples of Alabama’s fate when the ball isn’t bouncing their way. They never stop the bleed, just hope that attrition takes place.

The offense is good. I get it. They’ve got ballers all over the field and will score on our defense. What gets lost in all the focus on our D and their O is that, when we aren’t getting in our own damned way, our O has been eerily good. Not explosive, but effective. Alabama’s defense has proven to be anything but a typical Alabama defense.

I see Alabama scoring on big plays but I don’t see them running clock on offense with a power run game. We will control the clock to the tune of 40 to 20 by games end. If we don’t get in our own way we can move the ball consistently and eat clock and keep the vaunted offense off the field.

If our offense plays competently and we don’t commit a lot of penalties, we beat Alabama by a field goal. If we have the bad snaps and penalties then we lose by double digits. I’ll remain optimistically.

I think we lose a close one tonight. If we win though, I think we’re playing with house money on our way to the playoffs IMO. Win or lose tonight, those red elephants won’t stand a chance against the team they’ll see in Atlanta in December.

  24. I’m going 34-23 bad guys for this one. I think it’s a low score at the half (like 10-7) and our D is playing lights out, but our O can’t get anything going consistently and finally Bama hits a big play at the end of the half to get momentum. I think things open up for both teams 2nd half, but we can’t hang and have to many empty possessions to keep up. I’m worried about Tyrique and Daniels getting burned a time or two in this one. Likely a turnover from a blind side sack. These things will add up, but it will be clear Dawgs have the talent to hang and I think it’s a totally different ballgame in the rematch.

I’m like the Senator, just can’t think we can actually do it. But sometimes it’s a matter of destiny. I have been a real Stetson doubter. My Ole Lady watched game day. They had a story about him. She reminded me about talking to his mom the weekend of the Natty on a shuttle bus to Taco Mac’s in Atlanta. After they dropped us off she asked me “who’s Stetson Bennett.” I told her he was a country boy walk on who played just a few miles from your home town (she grew up in Nichols). She’s loved him every since.

She thinks he has “it” and we’re gonna win. Over the years she often has some good hunches. I’m through being a pessimist, Dogs win 35 to 27. If so, he’ll be write in on Nov. 3.

How did Smart get the Dawgs into a situation of an offense that has no legit D1 QB, a poor pass blocking and run blocking schemes, and an OC that can not come up with a game plan. Bama, A&M, LSU, and others have QB and WR, who can go get the ball and get open. Mathis will never be a SEC QB no more than Bennett…good story. But good stories do not win games
Not at UGA. Same old culture.
Frankly i think Smart is afraid to have a team with an offense. Just not his mind set.
Why keep playing Bennett…he has limited physical skills and not much game experience. He never has a QB that can run or pass.
His offense is a shade better than Dooley’s.
Turned it off after that missed FG.
Tired of seeing a team with no damn offense under Smart.
Took a lot for me to get back to watching any sports this year, including the Dawgs.
Better ways to spend one’s time and money.

  111. A few thoughts while it’s fresh:
    1. Just bc they’re throwing all over the park, doesn’t mean we have to. We got suckered out of running the ball for no reason
    2. If they aren’t going to call holding on Alabama, and they aren’t going to let you be physical with their WR, then there is no way to stop this offense
    3. You aren’t beating Alabama with Stetson Bennett. You just aren’t. So if that’s the goal, then the time to make an adjustment is now.
    4. There is a scenario where we keep this game a lot closer, but Kirby has to rethink his game management. You cannot let Stetson throw it this much. It will never work.

Yup. This is a moment like Dabo had with Kelly Bryant and Trevor Lawrence. If you want to make a run for a natty, you roll the dice with a QB change. If not, we, will likely finish 9-1 and then lose again in the SECCG.

      • I agree with your point about a championship run. Who exactly do you throw out there? I have no idea if Daniels has proven he’s ready to lead or play. D’Wan Mathis? Great story, but no way is he currently a championship-level QB based on what I saw 3 weeks ago. Carson Beck? The kid is probably leaving as soon as Brock Vandagriff steps on campus.

I have no inside information on the reason Fromm decided to leave, but he was the plan for 2019 and 2020 when Fields decided to take his skills to Columbus (thanks, Sasser). Kirby went out and tried the Burrow/OU route and got burned by Newman.

There doesn’t appear to be a championship caliber QB in Athens right now.

  112. I thought we would lose tonight. I had a sense of foreboding all day. Even when we were winning, I knew it was a matter of time before the defense would get gassed and sure enough they did. SBIV played his @$$ off in the 1st half and then looked like a former walk-on in the 2nd with the 2 picks and the batted balls. The officiating as usual was horrible, but this game was lost on turnovers pure and simple. You cannot give up cheap points to Bama like we did and expect to win.

I don’t know if it’s time to get JT ready to play at Kentucky, but this team isn’t going to beat Bama in Atlanta with Bennett at QB in a rematch (no knock on him, but it’s just the truth).

This game and likely the SEC championship and a potential playoff berth were lost when Jamie Newman opted out or whatever he did.

I’m trying not to overreact because I do believe we should win every game remaining on our schedule.

Great defenses simply can’t hang with great offenses in 2020. If you want to have any hope of beating Bama, you better be able to put up 40+. In other words, you better be packing something a lot heavier under center than Stetson Bennett.

The transition to J.T. Daniels has to begin in earnest this week if we want to have any shot of winning a potential rematch in December.

    • I’m sorry I don’t agree with what you just wrote. Our defense eventually became demoralized as the offense sputtered and turned the ball over in the 2nd half. You have to move the ball consistently and get points when they are available. When you turn it over as we did in the 2nd half and blow 2 coverages as we did tonight, this is what you get. Also, you damn sure better make them pay when they gift you one as we received on the game’s first play.

“ I’m sorry I don’t agree with what you just wrote.”

No need to apologize, bro. But I think the rest of your post actually supports what I said. I agree the defense did become demoralized because they knew they were up against a juggernaut and they weren’t getting enough help from our offense. Like I said, to beat Bama, you’ve got to be able to outgun them. You’re never going to beat them in a defensive struggle.

        • My point is that you don’t have to score 40. You have to break serve. We broke serve enough in the first half. You cannot give them cheap points as we did.

Was this defense going to hold them in the 20s? Should they have held them in low 30s if the offense had provided any 2nd half assistance? Yes.

          • The score was 24-20 at the half. Thats 20 points before the d gets tired. Bama was absolutely going to score another 20, so that means 41 to win, which I believe was Dawgs point.

            • My point is that Clemson and Ohio State don’t seem to be teams that just try to outscore people. They have an offense that can turn it on and have elite defenses.

Clemson will wear this Alabama team out in my humble opinion because they will make Bama pay when their defense breaks serve.

We need an offense that can keep the pressure off our defense where they don’t have to play perfectly in a game like this.

        Nah.

We gave up a deep ball TD on the first series of the game. They weren’t tired then.

We were getting roasted by Alabama’s WRs all night. Deep balls, crossing routes, you name it. They had our way with us. Najee was running the ball just fine as well. Elite defenses don’t really exist anymore.

  114. Got to get a new qb ready over the next 2 weeks unless we are content to just try and beat Florida. No way we could beat AL in Atlanta even if we get the lucky breaks called by the refs which won’t happen anyway.

Observations: Alabama just showed the SEC how to stop Bennett, when the ball is snapped have your dline jump. Alabama’s QB is as accurate as any I have seen. Their WR’s are other worldly. They do not drop passes period. Play calling for us was good we just could not execute when we needed to.
Burton dropped too many passes. Zamir ran better but he still needs to bounce outside more. The refs were their usual Bama boys but most of their calls were right, except for the Bama dbacks being able to mug our guys (holding like the mf’s they are.). Glad we have next week off to get our mojo back.

Oh well, got to do better next time.
My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.

Stetson Bennett ain’t the guy if we want to win a championship, but that richochet’d ball off Burton’s hands directly to the Alabama player and phantom PI directly thereafter in the endzone were back-breakers. Otherwise we were playing them tooth and nail.

I also agree with others about needing all the offense you can get in today’s game. Having a great defense alone doesn’t mean anything. We just gave up 564 yards, got beat on multiple deep balls, and we got roasted against LSU last year as well. When has our elite defense ever stopped a legitimately elite offense? It’s almost impossible to do in today’s game.

As was stated earlier this is all on Kirby for putting us in a position where Bennett is our best and only hope for the UGA offense. We used to fillet Richt for rolling out JT III, Cox, and Lambert types, but somehow give Kirby a pass? Please.

The fact that we had to even pin our hopes on a graduate transfer in the form of Jamie Newman is a direct indictment of Kirby’s QB management. Jamie Newman is not to blame, but instead his absence highlights just how behind we are. Meanwhile, somewhere in the wasteland of Columbus, OH Justin Fields is laughing his ass off while Jake Fromm collects checks for just breathing in Buffalo, NY. Rats and ships and all that.

We’d all better pray Saban wins another Natty this year and decides to hang it up while on top. That’s our best chance for ever beating Bama with Kirby at the helm.
