Kirby got his 9-6 masterpiece.

They used the bye week to figure out they don’t trust Stetson Bennett.

“We got better in the passing game but we didn’t have to throw it. We were running well.”

    -Kirby Smart.

It’s like he encapsulated his entire head coaching experience in two sentences.

Stet came into the Arkansas game throwing quick strikes to the open receiver and moving the offense. Haven’t seen it since that game.

Original, we went round and round early in the week on this topic. I admit that I have zero inside info. That being said, I have to believe that we have a more talented QB on our roster. What I also believe is that Kirby refuses to play talent or caution. Bennett is the less talented, but safest option as of today. Playing safe for the sake of playing safe will get you beat and will most certainly give you heartache. Kirby is old school and still believes in his hear of hearts that defense wins titles. That is 100% false. A great offense with a strong defense wins titles, not the other way around.

I get what you’re saying, but if you’re just going to hand it off, I think Mathis or Beck could handle that, right?
IMO, a wasted opportunity. Sure, leverage the run, but at least work some of the passing game and get a big enough lead that you can try a few other options.

O.K., was never in the stable to change UGA QB’s, this effort from Stetson Bennett IV said UGA needs a change at QB but can’t…which means for now UGA football is “constipated manball”, RB’s room has gotta luv that music…UGA football will not succeed when the opposition goes 6-8 in the box, UGA “OL” is really good, but not that really good…lets go #FTMF the hogtown dumbasses….#FTMF

We wanted Saban and instead we got a slightly better version of Will Muschamp who is somehow even more stubborn than Will Muschamp.

We will never win a national title with this version of Kirby Smart.

He didn’t learn one damn lesson from all that time coaching under Saban.

When Saban switched up his offense and won a national title in 2015 with a more wide-open attack, I bet it pissed Kirby off something fierce.

Nope. We lined up against a talented OL and played their game and won. The INT in the second half was on the WR Jackson. There were a couple balls that were under thrown, and we all know our QB is not capable, but, we beat a good team at their own game.

UF is another chapter. There is enough locker room material to get our team up for next week. Let’s see what they do tonight.

Corch I think you are wrong about Kirby. He played the game to stay healthy (that didn’t pan out) and we didn’t give Fla any good film. I still don’t think Kirby is dictating the offense or calling plays.

Matchups….matchups….game planning. Kirby is playing to his strengths, just don’t think QB is one of them. But he is playing the one that gives him/us the best chance imo.

Inexperienced QB, inexperienced WR…..Kentucky has a helluva secondary. He played for the win and stayed away from it for the most part..& we got won.

Now, here’s hoping that we get healed up on ‘D and Pickens is healthy by next week.

Another win, we’re still in it…..always happy with a win.

    • 2015 Bama was more “wide open” in that they weren’t really doing any I-formation or anything, but…Derrick Henry had 395 carries that season. and Jake Coker had 7 starts where he didn’t even crack 200 yards (and that was with Ridley to throw to).
Saban didn’t really embrace wide-open offense until Tua saved his ass in 2017

The Bennett we have seen the last couple of weeks is the one I remember from past Gday performance.

I think it’s just wrong to judge Kirby on Bennett. Newman was the guy Kirby expected with Monken’s help to create a high scoring offense.

What would have happened had Jake Fromm gone down for the season game 1 last year. Bennett under Coley’s leadership struggles to get to the Belk Bowl while FU wins the East.

Our QB room was much worse last year. Most top teams are like Clemson, tOSU or FU. Lose your starting QB which happened to Kirby when Newman walked away and your in trouble.

Uh, Clemson’s backup is a former #1 5-star (aka not a walk-on) and he threw for 300+ yards. OSU won a national title with their 3rd-string QB. Alabama beat us with their second-string in 2017 and 2018. I know it’s harder to hang onto good backups, but it’s not impossible.

  10. As proven most recently, practice ain’t a game, and not working stuff out in a game to ” just get a win” almost always comes back around. If we beat Florida lime this, I’ll take it, it’d even be funny. But there’s absolutely no winning rings like this when the good opponents can hit dimes repeatedly. He’ll even bad teams like ole miss can do it. This was a match up of 2 bad teams on offense, one team with tremendously better talent all around.

Stumble our way through the season to start all over at QB again next year. Living on 9 or 10 wins but really never bringing a total team deal.

We are struggling because of QB play – WHICH ISN’T Kirby’s fault. He addressed the problem and Newman killed it dead. I guarantee Stetson never figured he would be our only option and likely thought he MIGHT see the field in mop up roles.

  11. I’ve been just as frustrated with the offense but think how that game could have gone of we HAD to throw the ball.

I don’t see the QB situation being great any time soon. Even if someone really steps up this season or next, it’s still probably going to take a couple years to solidify that position with quality depth. We really got ourselves into a hole at that position. I’m not even sure it’s really anyone’s fault but more a domino effect.

Do you think Kirby will allow the kind of offense it needs to win a national title, let alone let a freshman have full rein of that offense?

I’m gonna say a big, “No,” to both those questions. Kirby is who he is, and who he is is not Dabo.

He’s Les Miles. Or Muschamp 2.0. Either way, he’s a play not to lose coach, and a play not to lose will never win a national title in this era.

Since we have no one better (I’m with you, we don’t), play the kid you believe is your 2021 QB. We Are Not Winning Anything More Than The East. If that. Bennett is not the qb of the future. • Id ask, with the messed up nature of this year, does it even matter? I’ll give Clemson or Ohio state all the credit they can enjoy their national championship but mostly I don’t think many people care as much. It would be the most Georgia thing ever to win a CFP Championship this year. But it’s not gonna happen. Even with the Wake kid, it was a long shot. Kirby’s in a tight spot. He absolutely has to win now and that puts the development of next years QB behind. Here’s another variable. Covid cases are rising rapidly. Spring ball is very much in danger. So we go into March with BM closed until maybe June and we’re exactly where we were in ‘20. Hoping. Hope is not a strategy.

It matters because it’s going to kill Kirby on the recruiting trail if it somehow isn’t already. Top QBs don’t come to UGA to get passed over for SBIV. Beck has got to be kicking himself right now for choosing the Dawgs. Daniels, too. If Vandagriff doesn’t recommit to OK he’s blind, which isn’t a good thing for a QB to be.

My prediction, and I’d love to be wrong, is that SBIV remains the starter and Mathis and Beck or Daniels leave after the season ends. As for BVG, I’m not convinced that a Class-A private-school QB is ready for SEC competition. Eason struggled mightily after lighting it up–he was Gatorade POY–at Lake Stevens. I’m excited about Mims, less so about Lovasea, but the Dawgs need a QB and WRs next season. Just my two cents, which probably aren’t worth two cents.

                Predicition:

Bennett throws an early first quarter pick-6, the Gators shut down our one-dimensional offense, and the go into halftime leading 14-0, as our defense puts up a heroic effort in shutting down their offense.

JT Daniels comes out as the starter and runs Monken’s offense as designed. Finds the open receivers all over the field. The Dawgs score 21 unanswered points in the second half, the ‘turds get a fourth quarter field goal, but Daniels comes back to hit Darnell Washington on a huge pass up the seam for 50 yards for JT’s fourth TD pass of the day, and win 28-17.

Or, Kirby sticks with Bennett and we wind up losing 17-6.

There isnt a playbook with a chapter that says “explosive”. It is just any play that is run successfully. We had way more today than in the past this season.

UK is a good team. Probably better than UF on the LOS. Just let it happen. Yeah, great teams like LSU last year just blow everyone out. That doesnt happen. Our ‘17 team did that. It wont happen again for some time. But, the Zeus/Milton/McIntosh/Cook tandem appears to be developing.

I can be the biggest bitcher on this blog, but today I’ll say that Kirby’s building of a great defense and offensive line paid off. The running backs were money and that’s something to hang our hats on.
If the man doesn’t have a great QB ready, that’s that. He doesn’t.
I wasn’t the least bit surprised at the way this game went. Georgia left some points on the field, but what else is new?
What happened to all the assurances we gave each other that all we needed was a game manager at QB? I don’t think he was sacked all day, and he made some good runs. On the last interception, our receiver was held and quit on the route because he thought for sure the ref would call it. He didn’t.
Not a great performance, but Kentucky isn’t chopped liver, esp. at home with nothing to play for except the upset.
I still think Kirby pretty much has to play manball…and the running game was money. And I don’t think Florida will have the offensive line muscle that Kentucky has.
Heck yeah…I’d like to have a better QB, but hats of to the kid for not getting down on himself like so many of you have.

  18. Highly unlikely we win the Nat’l Championship this season- we don’t have the QB to beat Alabama, Clemson, or both. Of course, we haven’t won a Nat’l title since the Carter administration so I don’t see the need to whine and cry as this is nothing new.

That Kentucky team is average as grits and their QB wasn’t capable of completing a pass longer than 7 yards. All we needed to do was run the ball and not do anything foolish and everyone in Butts Mehre knew that. This game was just a glorified scrimmage before the real battle which is next week in Jax.

Now, if we come out with the same game plan against Florida, it isn’t working, we don’t adjust, then I will be pissed. But, we didn’t need to do anything today other than run the ball and pass a little bit. Kentucky had no shot of beating us with that offense they trotted out there today.

I am looking forward to hopefully sticking it to the Gators once again.

Blank’s mistake was not stepping in to do what needed to be done LAST SEASON so the Falcons could hire Kevin Stefanski who runs that Shanahan West Coast Offense to come in here and get Ryan and Julio rolling again.

They were a packaged deal. GM’s don’t get to make the same mistake three times. They usually get two chances to hire the head coach. Dimitroff didn’t even get two chances. We looked awesome for a couple weeks, UK is not a given W for anybody. UF has been shut down, they were flying high for a minute, not for long though, everything is out. The single constant is roster and complimentary ball. We can do that, if nothing else, lol.

Instead of taking the opportunity to work on those things in game we squandered the opportunity and did a rerun of last years KY game. Our excuse last year was the weather. Maybe it was to sunny today? Just a pitiful wasted opportunity. Again, I think it’s a good and troubling comparison. Except I don’t remember Miles ever saying, as Kirby basically said, “The best games are the ones in which we score the least points and win.” 2-0! 3-2! Woo! Kirby seems to be more convinced than ever that defense wins nat’l championships. It doesn’t. Not anymore. If any team beats Bama, OSU, or Clemson 9-6 in 2020, I’ll eat my hat, shirt, pants, socks, and shoes. You beat those teams by scoring in the 40s–high 30s at the very least. As the Senator pointed out last week, the next time Kirby’s Dawgs score 30 or more against Bama will be the first.

Siskey told you Miles was 19-9 his last 28 games. You retorted that he had to play Alabama. Correct . Miles played Alabama twice in that 28 game stretch and lost both. By contrast, Smart is 22-6 his last 28 games, but the “had to play Alabama “ argument does help you as Smart has played Alabama twice in those 28 games, the same number of times as Miles played Alabama in the range of games Siskey cited you.
Miles was 1-2 against Auburn in that stretch, including 0-2 at Auburn. Smart was 2-0 in that stretch. Miles was 0-1 against Notre Dame. Smart was 1-0.

I do see a different between Miles and Smart in the last two and a half years with Smart much better.

It’s a scandal and a shame that the Dawgs don’t have a 6 star QB. Yeah I reckon we can Blame Kirby for that. But dammitman! It’s not like he kicked any of them off the team. The Dawgs are doing about as good as possible considering the circumstances. Winning doesn’t suck so…

Correction. Briefly plays to wins, then pisses himself when it’s working.

I could see him getting conservative if aggression wasn’t working. But… when you have a lead suddenly pulling into your shell…

Or, today, being up 14-3 and D playing lights out, for some damn reason NOT practicing 2 min offense with each quarterback available and getting more game reps.

Why do we need to shorten the game vs Ky?

Yeah it’s all Kirby’s fault we won another game. Terrible coaching even Ray Charles or an SEC ref could see If we don’t throw the ball we can’t lose this game. I’m OK if we win every game and never cover.
If we win ugly next week I’m OK with that too. Just beat FU I don’t care how.
Each week just find a way to win. Always amazed at how many fans complain about a win.

Rosters seem to change daily with CV and injuries. It’s going to come down to what team can stay healthy the longest. Hopefully, it’s the Dawgs. Fine. SBIV is the “best” we’ve got. That’s still the problem if he’s the “best” we’ve got. I get it, Newman bailed and that put us in a tough spot. But when you have to go all the way to your 4th string as QB1… that is an issue. I sure hope you all are right that we didn’t need to throw much to beat KY, but don’t you think we should’ve worked out a few more passing game kinks? You think all of a sudden FU is the team to test out a new and improved offense? Because if you think we can get in a boat race with them and that SBIV is gonna lead us to victory…. I guess I’ll be happy to eat that crow. Kirby is who Kirby is and at this point, I hope he can evolve. At some point, he’s not gonna recruit this same talent, certainly not offensive talent playing the offense he’s so comfortable with. I’m just glad that I don’t invest so much of my heart into the Dawgs these days. I can’t take the continued heartbreak.

If you want to talk about Kirby demanding an offense that is far more complicated than a college offense needs to be from 2016-2019, that is a different conversation worthy of having. And even now, in bringing in someone to install a much simpler offense, he’s still demanding manball bullshit. I’m ready to agree with you that Kirby has been nothing but wrong in the kind of offense he wants to run.

But, if you actually say that Kirby should’ve benched the QB who won the 2017 SEC Title, was key in the 4th Quarter comeback to tie the Rose Bowl and get to overtime, and who was the third best QB in all of college football in 2018, then you lack the basic intelligence for rational thought.

I’m gonna regret this, but… no Kirby shouldn’t have benched Fromm. But he should have put in an offense, tailored some of it in some capacity in 2018, so that Fields was still on our roster this season. Fields may have left regardless because Kirby wasn’t gonna give a whole lot of time to Fields over Fromm, but he’s also paid millions of dollars to figure this out. Much the same way I’d say that we shouldn’t be sitting on SBIV as QB1 on Halloween 2020, regardless of COVID/Newman leaving. It’s a shitty hand Kirby’s been dealt for sure.

It’s late, so let me weigh in. I did not see the game as it happened, but I did check the score occasionally and 7-3 at the half made me wonder wtf was going on. Ditto for the final score. Then I read Emerson’s article where I believe he said Ky ‘gashed’ the UGA defense. So then I watched the game.

I admit it was not great, but I’m not slashing my wrists just yet. KY averaged 3.5 yds rushing which is more than it should have been, but that wasn’t exactly gashing us. Bennett’s 2 INTs were killer. One was completely his fault for several reasons but the other one I thought was at least partially on Rosemy. Point being without those two gaffes it’s probably a 28-3 game. At least 20-3, which would have been about what you would expect on the road at Lexington. Hell, I recall people here opining before the season that Kentucky was a trap game and might be our toughest test outside of Bama. Bennett can play better; maybe if he hadn’t been so successful vs. Arkansas (and the next 6 halves of football) we would more desperate, but changing horses right now going into Jax is a level of desperation we don’t need. It’d be like starting Bauta again. I’m a lot more worried about defensive injuries. We do have some depth there, though, and it’s always possible that some injuries may be minor but they didn’t see the need to take any chances.

So, it’s not great, but it is fixable. We can still beat those FMFs. I am going to console myself and finish listening to Asleep at the Wheel on ACL. Damn, they’re good. Can’t believe Ray Benson was ever as young as he looked in that first ACL show.

    • Corch, we all want a national title. I still believe Kirby is the guy who can deliver it. I don’t know (and you don’t either) if he and Monken decided the best way to win yesterday was to win the line of scrimmage and not give Kentucky anything cheap. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a lot of preparation done these last 2 weeks for the Handbags … some on the practice field but a lot in the coaches’ offices. Take away the 2 turnovers (especially the batted ball), and that game is very different.

Am I happy with where we are at the QB position? No way. I would have thought JT Daniels would have gotten a really serious look by now. Until we have a QB ready to be a pass-first team, we are going to be a physical, run-first offense.

Stoops wanted to limit the number of possessions, and Kirby was more than happy to play the same game.

Georgia safety Richard LeCounte was involved in a traffic accident after the team returned to Athens, Georgia, from Lexington, Kentucky, on Saturday evening, Athens-Clarke County Sgt. John Q. Williams confirmed to ESPN.

There were multiple vehicles and a dirt bike involved in the accident, Williams said. LeCounte suffered undisclosed injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

LeCounte, a preseason All-America selection and team captain, had 13 tackles and three pass breakups in Georgia’s 14-3 victory earlier Saturday against Kentucky.

Florida is gonna get us next week, and we should finish at 8-2, bypassing another thumping by Alabama on our way to some mid-tier Florida bowl (Citrus, Outback, Gator). That’s what this team looks and has performed like. We’re not getting better week-to-week. If anything, our weaknesses are showing.
