Kirby’s kind of Dawg porn isn’t our kind of Dawg porn

Shot ($$).

“Nobody wants a 9-6 game. They don’t enjoy that. I think it’s a great thing. I think it’s physical toughness, I think it’s a rock ’em-sock ’em, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I think it could be a great game and be 9-6, but nobody’s entertained by that. So the world we live in today is entertained by points.”

Chaser.

Georgia ran on all 12 plays of an 86-yard scoring drive on its first possession, getting a two-yard Bennett touchdown run.

If Bennett attempts 30 passes next week, Florida wins going away.

Be honest though, has that EVER NOT been the case with Kirby? It isn’t and ain’t and won’t be any sort of Georgia’s identity to be a pass first offense. Kirby says he wants to take what the opposing team gives his offense. Seems every team we’ve played for four years never gives us the passing game. Hmmm

Also…Kentucky ain’t exactly recruiting Richard Sherman and Patrick Peterson at DB, and I didn’t see a lot of open receivers as we have in past games. Only thing that seems to scare our O more than press man, is zone. yikes.

    • Actually, Kentucky has an excellent secondary. Kirby saw how they won their games (Points off turnovers) and said okay we will make them beat us with their offense, not ours. Still nearly backfired even though we only threw it a handful of times.

They currently lead the nation in INTS. Right game plan coming in, a win going out……will take that every week.

TD, Punt, INT, Missed FG, TD, INT, Punt, Downs.

Consecutive top five recruiting classes shouldn’t be doing that against Kentucky, ever. Not sure how much clearer I can state it. Gameplan is one thing. The offense continuing to play down is another.

Kirby has no choice but to try and bolster his teams public confidence. But for goodness sakes. It’s just so mediocre as to be offensive.

At the end of the day, you get graded on wins and losses……1, 11 or 50 point wins, they all count the same.

The last I looked, the Dawgs are still in it.

            Greg,

I wasn’t a fan of the Goff/Donnan years. And my guess is that you weren’t either. Approaching the Kirby era with the mindset of “a win is a win” against Kentucky sort of smacks of that aforementioned doldrums of the 90s.

Bottom line, more is to be expected. With our resources and recruiting, win or not, yesterday’s performance was not good enough. If Alabama had won at Kentucky 14-3, Nick Saban would chew a hole in the foam spit guard on the microphone in the postgame presser.

I feel like you have somewhere you want to go with this question, but I’ll play. I’m happy when we win. I’m happy with quality play. But when was I last happy with the direction of the program? With Kirby Smart’s ability to evolve as a head coach into a style of play that is more competitive against the elites? With the macro view of the team to which a devote most of my fandom? Sometime early in the fourth quarter against Alabama in the SEC Championship game. Since then it’s been mediocre. I’m sorry, but dominating the East doesn’t do it for me anymore. Just my viewpoint.

And this is what it’s all about.

If we are what we say we are, we beat the Kentuckys and Sakerlinas of the world by more than 30 EVERY TIME WE PLAY THEM. We don’t barely hang on to beat Kentucky and lose to Sakerlina.

We are not what we say we are, and it’s because our coach refuses to adapt to the reality of modern college football. We won’t be what we say we are until he does just that.

I’m not gonna hold my breath.

Hayul no, I just don’t completely lose my mind on an “ugly win” as “Corch” has. Thinks he has gone to an extreme, you can too if you want…..it doesn’t effect me, you’re prerogative.

The way I look at it, is we are 4 & 1 and are still in it and I am happy that we are when all things are considered…..perspective, perspective. It ain’t over until it’s over.

In Greg’s defense, Goff (Air Georgia!!) and Donnan DID score, but you did ultimately judge them on wins?

Just to play devil’s advocate. Kirby IS winning despite obvious deficiencies such as both top WRs (Pickens, Blaylock) out yesterday with a third 5star stud (DRob) on a milk carton nowadays, a 4th string QB, and seemingly half the defense standing next to him on the sideline.

He is thinking, I got the W, now let’s get home.

I know our household just wanted that game over ourselves!

But, you are exactly right…..shit has happened this year and Kirby is working around it to win, maybe buy some time to get us to the SECG.

Give me an “ugly win” any day, just win.

UK came into the game with TEN turnovers forced in just the last 6 quarters, incl. NINE ints., so yes, you are correct about that.

The run game to cool off a hot Defense was brilliantly executed (shades of Richt at GT), but then they got 2 more INTs anyway!

Kirby just has to wonder what we are all screaming about; we won.

But it is obvious that Stetson can beat 8 teams we play this year. He was beating the 9th at half, and may be able to beat number 10 next week.

He is OK, but if we win in JVille, what about game 11?

        That is the question.

Points are everything in the modern optics of the game. UGA suffocates and wins by 11 over a 2-4 team, and the world is ending. OSU beats a winless team by 13 and is an undisputed member of the 2020 CFB royalty. The difference: points scored on offense.

We are clearly a Top 4 team. Our strengths are Defense, Special Teams (Hello coach Cochran!), Offensive line and running back. But our weakness at QB and WR means we play by running around our backhand. You can only get away with that for so long until your opponent exploits it…and they will. Grantham will have his D ready to be physical and run blitz. If our OL decides to rip holes open for Zeus to average 6 YPC then hooray! But if we can’t then what the hell is Plan B now? As satisfying as it would be, and as much as it seems to be our first option, I don’t see how a pound and ground Plan A is the way to go in Jax. I trust in Monken to make the calls…will Kirby trust in SBIV to try and execute? Wouldn’t have yesterday been a good time to find out? Of course we needed to win, but beating a lesser opponent (for gawd’s sake, it was Kentucky!) by just hitting forehand slams isn’t going to get you ready for someone that can pressure your greatest weakness. Last year and this year are really starting to feel so….

    …Mark Richt.

Since Kirby arrived the formula has been make UGA throw for over 30 passes to beat them.

We could have won yesterday without a single forward pass.
There has been plenty of player chatter saying Daniels physically is not ready. Mathis great story just right now horrible option as starter. Beck was on the travel team interestingly yesterday for the first time. Sadly SBIV today is our best option.

I’ll keep saying this till the Senator locks me out. Jamie Newman leaving at the last minute forever changed this season. I believe when Kirby fired all star recruiter Coley and brought in Monken it was his admission Man Ball could not win a NC.

    • I couldn’t agree with this enough. Kirby’s misplay with Fields, and Jake’s early departure put us in a big bind. Kirby finds an experienced, DIV 1 QB who can throw and run/RPO, and is over 6 ft. tall. And also gets Daniels, just in case. Things are progressing well and then 4-5 weeks before the season Newman opts out. Daniels is obviously not ready for whatever reason and Mathis- who won the QB start for game 1, is AWOL.
Look, I’m not happy with where we sit today, but this isn’t the NFL. We can’t trade for a serviceable DIV1 QB mid-season. Kirby is trying to make the best out of it but make no mistake, he pulled all of the cards he could to shore things up (last minute) and it’s back-fired, again. If Monken had Newman to work with this past Saturday we win, convincingly.
IMHO, what happens Saturday is a direct result of Newman quitting on his “team”, too.

  8. Football has become driven by statistics and Madden, which are offense-oriented. Offense sells tickets and TV contracts (for those of you who thought the 9-6 Bama/LSU game in 2011 wasn’t great football, you don’t know great football). Call me old-fashioned and post the “get off my lawn” clip from Gran Torino in response, but I love to watch a good defense play and an offensive line open a hole that enables a running back to get a nice run because it’s team football.

To get back to our program, we got screwed by Jake’s decision to declare early and then Newman’s decision to opt out. I only want an offense that would make our 2012 offense proud. Is that too much to ask, Kirby?

      • I wasn’t happy at all with the offensive play yesterday (or for the last 6 quarters). I have made my thoughts about the QB situation known.

Would I like to see us win every game 73-7? Hell, yes. We would still have a segment of our fan base say “We gave up too many first downs” or “The 3rd team quarterback sucks … fire the coach.”

Spurrier had a point when he made the comment about how 10 years is long enough for someone to be at one place and how it irritated him when the Handbag fan base was upset that they didn’t win every game by 50 when they had never won anything before.

So think about the first drive in 2007 against Florida vs the first drive against Kentucky yesterday. All runs leading to a score.

But after that in 2007 we threw the ball all over the yard and outscored Florida. Does anyone think we can do that next Saturday? And I fear we’re going to have to score 35+ points next Saturday even if all our injured defenders return for the game.

Then bless us with the secret knowledge.

All we can go on is what we see, what we hear, and use past performance as the predictor of future events. Everything we’ve seen from Kirby Smart paints the picture of a play not to lose coach wedded to a brand of football that cannot win in today’s day and age.

If you have something that dissuade that, by all means, please let us all know. And I’m not being sarcastic. Longtime lurker, class of 92. Seems like a good time/year to jump in. Saw Dooleys Dawgs for one season. 1988. Then Ray Gump made my remaining falls in Athens the things of nightmares. So many Jack and coke, blackout drunk Saturday night post-game hangovers (yeah, the hangovers usually started sometime in the 4th quarter as we funneled out of the stadium).

After just saying that, some of my fondest memories in life come form my time in Athens. The smell of bourbon and coke, fried chicken, boiled peanuts, doing 3 or 4 game college game parlays for $10, (rarely winning), and seeing Widespread Panic play, dozens of times, when they were just a house band. Culminating with seeing this new up and coming band called ‘Pearl Jam’ , front row, at Legion field, in April of 1992. So many great memories in Athens, but so many disappointing gameday Saturday nights. So bittersweet. Wouldn’t trade it for anything though. Damn, that was soooo long ago!

Hugely loyal dawg here, but the last 33 football seasons have been a repeating ‘Lucy pulls the football away from Charlie Browns foot’ scenario. I just want to win a freaking title (kick the ball). Just one. Not being greedy here! Like all of us, I am surrounded daily by Auburn fans, Fla fans, Clemson fans, Bama fans, OSU fans, and all the others. It is freaking painful guys, it really is. Every fall I think that this is the year. I really thought we’d turned the page with Kirby. I now have my doubts.

I will contribute from time to time, because I think it will be therapeutic. I read and appreciate the passion from all the current commenters, no matter which color glasses you wear. Seems the emotions run a little high here, but that happens in life with things people are uber passionate about. Doubt you get that on a cake-making blog, but maybe you do. I won’t get snarky or engage in back and forth personal insults, or try to compare wordsmithing prowess, world history knowledge, music knowledge, or penis size. But I would like to participate. Sorry so long, thanks for reading and I hope I am able contribute to the dialogue in some small way.

I’ll post this in a few article comments to get the ball rolling. Thanks again and ……

Jam the WR’s and put 8 in the box and if SBIV even so much as looks like he is passing Blitz the farm. Run blitzs work too.

I enjoyed yesterday’s game as much as I have enjoyed a Georgia game in a long, long time. Not because of the game itself (Which was about as exciting as drying paint, even Scott Howard sounded bored) but I was doing some tractor work, listening to the radio broadcast. After the first half I took a break and my Dad and I drank beer on the tailgate, listening to Scott Howard. It felt like I had stepped back in time. We rarely went to games when I was a kid, and there was too much work to be done to watch one when it came on TV so we listened to Munson while we bucked bales or cut wood, whatever. He and I haven’t enjoyed a game together since we let the tickets go in 2014. He had a sixer bet with one of his cronies that UGA wouldn’t cover 12 points in a win and he was yelling at the radio “Don’t you kick that gotdam field goal Kirby!” like it was life or death. The weather was beautiful, the leaves and fall colors spectacular, the beer was ice cold and delicious. Great day to be alive.
I figured after the first quarter the commentariat here would be in full voice and y’all truly did not disappoint. Sorry I couldn’t join in the fun but was away from my laptop and I’m too ham handed to type on a phone. I swear yesterday felt like a “Vince took the second half kickoff and ran out the clock” throwback to 1978.
UGA needs a QB. Got Sr. and I agree, if he (Kirby) keeps this shit up no QB recruit looking to showcase for the NFL is going anywhere near UGA.
