Funny you would mention that as I can’t find a great video card that is reasonably priced. I’ll finish the computer and add the video card when they are not in such demand. The motherboard has adequate video capabilities with out a great card.
Video cards are like current lumber prices – ridiculously priced.

Nope. I’ve thought about it as well as joining VHPA. One of our scout observers has a great website dedicated to our old unit that I frequently visit. I’ve been able to contact some of my old buddies through the site which was good and bad if that makes sense.

I84, my old buddy Phil volunteered for the Navy in ’66. He said when he got off the bus at Great Lakes, MI a Chief came down the line pointing one, two, one, two, one, two. All the twos got back on the bus and headed to Parris Island. Phil was fortunate to spend his time as a Navy Airedale in Florida.
That’s odd to me as I was under the impression the Marines were an all volunteer force.

He may have “volunteered” for the draft. You could do that, list a preference and only have to do two years. The corps took draftees when they didn’t have enough enlistee’s to fill their quota’s. Do you know about Project 100,000 (they also called it MacNamara’s Moron Corps)? To make up for draft deferments the military tool ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND troopers who could not pass basic mental and physical standards. It started right before I went in, Oct 66 and lasted a couple of years.

Just talked to ol Phil. He told me his mom received his draft notice and he went directly to enlist without even opening it.
I became familiar with McNamara’s 100,000 in ’86 as a Company Commander. Had an E-6 KP Pusher that big Army was going to put out with 18 years. 1SGT said that wasn’t right. Yes he was a shithead, but he had been a shithead for 18 years. If they were gonna put him out they should’ve done it long before. The soldier came to duty every day no matter how much he’d had to drink and did his job to the best of his ability. With the help of a friendly JAG OFFicer we were able to keep him in until he hit 20.
Man, I knew Sergeants Major that fit the time frame and intellectual disability to be one of Mac’s Morons. Quite a few officers that fit also if only they’d had enlisted time.

For the record I think deferments are chickenshit. If you want to go to college in lieu of being drafted? Great. You’re in ROTC. Everyone does their time in service. Got bones spurs you say? That’s fine. We have something you can do. As Social Security told my late buddy Doug after he was retired from CSX with full disability, “There are 337 jobs you can do at a desk.”
Turn some of these congressmen’s children into IED magnets and see how eager they are to feed their true constituents at KBR and Halliburton my tax money.

I volunteered for the draft after taking all the test to qualify for flight school. I figured if I flunked out of flight school I would only have 2 years and most of that would be eaten up with basic and half of flight school. After flight school I was discharged as a US and reenlisted as a RA for a 3 year commitment. When I came home for that paradise known as Vietnam I was given the choice – Ft. Hood – Ft Rucker (I was an IP) or go home. I took home. I then joined the reserve unit at Dobbins AFB so I could fly. Spent 7 years flying medivac with the reserve unit.

All Americans should be given the gift of service. Best way going forward for us to learn how to work together. No exemptions for the child of politicians would stop many future wars.

Really depends on what you want to accomplish with the system. My current build is very high end and it will cost $1800 – $2000 when completed. I did source some stuff from a buddy that had brand new stuff he wasn’t using which saved me a ton of $$$. I got a monitor for $350 he paid nearly $1000 for it. He is one of those gotta have the latest greatest gizmo and $$ is not his main concern. My CPU cooling fan was donated by him – he paid a kings ransom for it. I was going to go liquid cooling before he gave me his extra Noctua fan.
If you don’t have very high demands you can build for way less.

Voted Gary Johnson in ’16, but got myself to vote for Biden this time.
I don’t think all those Libertarian votes this year would have gone to Trump. I think many people, if they’d had only 2 choices, would’ve voted Biden. I think Trump really pissed off a lot of voters when he tweeted–October of 2019–that “Never Trumpers” were “human scum.”

Query how the libertarian vote totals compare in those states to previous presidential elections? If the same, nobody should complain. If considerably higher than previous elections, then Trump may have pissed off and pissed away his victory margin.

Jorgensen got a lot less than Johnson did in 2016. It’s not so much that people left Trump and voted for the LP. It’s that they either left the LP and voted Biden or they left Trump and voted Biden because they were so fed up. Personally, I went from McMullin in 2016 to Biden this year. Four years of the BS finally pushed me to the point of voting for a candidate that I really don’t want to be President (and a VP that frankly terrifies me) just to try to end the circus.
These people that berate third party voters for not making the “correct” binary choice don’t really understand third party voters very well. Once you make that leap, you’re acknowledging that you’re abandoning the ability to help a lesser evil…because you’re trying to influence the choices you hope to have in the future in the hope that maybe one of them isn’t so terrible. They’re also highly presumptive in thinking that any party somehow “owns” those votes. The moment that the Republican Party nominated Trump in 2016 was the moment that they lost my vote at the top of the ticket. There was nothing they could do about it or no caterwauling about socialism or defund the police or whatever flaw the D side had that would change that short of nominating someone else at the top of their own ticket.

If you analyze how politics works both sides are trying to get to 50 percent and a little more. You may think they have principles. Other than power, they don’t. Its just cobbled together policy positions poll tested to achieve a desired result: winning.
Those who opt out are ignored. You can either be a constituent or be irrelevant.

Like fisheriesdawg above, I didn’t consider my vote for Johnson in 2016 a throwaway. I hoped more people would vote Libertarian that year, and send a message to both major parties that we-the-people weren’t happy with either of their nominations. Of course that’s not the way it worked out; looking back I wish I’d voted for Hillary. And the one thing I was sure of before this election: no way in hell was I voting for Trump. I’m glad the Dems put up someone who might not be all that terrible (can’t say I’m unhappy that there’s no clear majority for either party in Congress).

Based on the numbers, the Libertarian vote swung it to Trump 4 years ago & now it’s looking like the opposite is true. It’s a pretty small coalition (3% in 2016; a little over 1% this year), but one that seems to be becoming more & more vital.

On Veterans Day, we’ve got some Americans try to throw out ballots because they have USAF post office boxes as “out of state and hence illegal” voters. That’s some thanks for their service.
I grew up in a town filled with veterans (very large military base), and you see the scars they bear, physically and emotionally. They pay a steep price.

Third parties need a parliamentary system to have a real impact. The way our democracy is constructed it will always be a two party system. One party can die and be replaced. Thats happened (at least?) twice but you’re not going to see large participation in a party that has no chance to elect a president IMHO.

Interestingly, it’s mostly for the same reason that I typically don’t vote Democrat. I don’t like being browbeaten by politicians, and the Democrats have cornered the market on that.
Other reasons:
-“It’s the economy, stupid”. The people that switched to Trump want the economy open and want to work, Brown, White, Black, whatever and felt Trump would do that.
-BLM, Defund the Police and the riots all played a part too.
The Democrats can ruin the GOP if they’d just learn to leave people alone, just a little. The GOP can win back everything if they’d figure out how to get rid of the lunatics, learn to have some compassion, and evolve as a party instead of trying to keep their platform the same as it was in 1987.

I wish there was some other option. Of course if I could change just one thing in our system it would be term limits. One term and your done for life. Political ruling class IMO was not what our founding fathers had in mind.
It’s not possible to avoid corruption when you stay in office for 20-50 years. You lose all context what it’s like for a regular family or small business person. For my generation not a single Senators son was KIA in Nam. They just believe they are above us.

I believe you are correct. In fact, term limits was the issue that ushered in the ‘Republican Revolution’ headed up by our very own Newt Gingrich. Surprisingly (not!) once elected, term limits didn’t seem so attractive anymore. The issue died. Republicans conveniently came up with competing term limit plans and decided they couldn’t agree which was best. So, no term limits turned out to be best.

How Newt avoided the issue was most Americans support term limits. They just won’t vote their person out office. They support everyone else doing it.

He told his voters to vote in person. The way it was set up mail in votes were counted last if they had counted them all together it would not seem off. As someone who voted absentee both as a military wife and in this election this assertion of illegal votes is ridiculous and scary. The process to get an absentee ballot isn’t easy. The voters spoke. Grafton, I’m always amazed when a governor or big city mayor goes to prison upon completion of his term. But this is what occurs in states such as Illinois and cities such as ATL and New Orleans on a regular basis. Why would they do that and what makes them think they can get away with it?
What concerns me is the amount of corruption that’s never prosecuted. It’s been my experience that the majority of criminal activity goes undiscovered. Brazen stupidity and arrogance is what busts most criminals.

Also, you may like low gas prices (I do too) but it’s not a good thing for the economy. They are only low because demand has gone way down during the pandemic. And thousands of people have lost their jobs in that industry and related industries as a result. The only way the gas prices are going to stay this low is if the pandemic continues. I don’t know why people give Trump credit for low gas prices.

But if Trump made a similar claim, I certainly wouldn’t support it. For now, I’ve seen accusations of fraud in cities like Philadelphia, which is famously corrupt. I don’t put much stock in appeals to authority. I’m more interested in truth than in the government’s official position. For the record, even if the fraud which occurred was enough to swing the election, I think it’s unlikely Trump will prevail. So you’re probably going to get your most fervent wish of Orange Man leaving office.
I just hope we can use the election as an excuse to move to something more secure, transparent, and quicker like blockchain voting.

I served 6 years in the U.S. Navy. I’m not gonna pretend that I enjoyed every minute of it, but I made some life long friendships and I wouldn’t be where I’m at in my career if I hadn’t served. I’ll always be grateful that my dad encouraged me to join. Happy Veteran’s Day everyone!

I wish I had a cool patriotic story as to why I joined the Navy. In all honesty it was my last ditch effort to get the fuck out of the small town where I was bound and determined to end up a total failure like many of the people around me. Best decision I could have made at the time. I encourage any wayward youth that has no direction to join the service. Getting paid to learn a trade, build work ethic and get addition money for more college is a hell of a deal.

armydawg here. Some may remember me as J-Dawg. After the senator changed things and we had to sign up and in I had to change the handle because I couldn’t sign up as J-Dawg. Now I’m armydawg and it’s a more appropriate name because I am a retired Sergeant First Class, US Army, and served two tours in Viet Nam. Fiercely proud of that. My 21 years in the Army allowed me to go places and experience things other people never will. I took my final re-enlistment oath aboard the USS Arizona memorial when I was stationed in Hawaii. That was emotional. I am a fierce DAWG fan and have been all my life and am proud to say that my oldest son has his degree from UGA, class of 04. Now, let’s beat those shit-kickers from Misery.

Thanks for lacing up the jungle boots, armydawg. I was very fortunate to be snatched up by the stacking swivel as a young enlisted man and officer by some combat hardened ‘Nam vet NCO’s. Thankfully I was taught early to listen my elders and those who had BTDT.

Mustang huh? My old man was enlisted in WW2 on a 4 stack APD in the Pacific. He got out, went to college and took a commission after he graduated.

Rare breed, the Mustang. Never served, but coming up I liked the leaders whom I knew had been in the ditch before, rather than an office weenie trying to straw us field guys from the office. Now that I drive the desk, I try to remember that, it makes me a better leader.

Three years enlisted certainly helped me as an officer. But my upbringing really helped me as a soldier and Infantry Officer. Things that I took for granted were foreign to most of my buddies. Sleeping on the ground, movement through the woods at night, building a fire instantly using pine lighter knot, swinging a sledge hammer and axe, basic vehicle maintenance and tool use, digging a damn hole and most importantly how to shit in the woods without falling back into it. Keeping clean in a rugged environment and how to warm canned food without burning it or myself. Skinning and dressing an animal was absolutely traumatic for most. One thing they could all do was shoot. Firing expert was a requirement for Infantry officers I always assumed.
Most of the junior officers never had a real job or worked with their hands. That’s the reason they looked like idiots upon reaching their first assignment and many throughout their career. I’ll never forget reccing a new training area with my Battalion Commander in a jeep and having to drive as he couldn’t handle a stick shift. Tennessee native, Ga tech grad. Whatdya expect, right?
I was blessed with a rigid primary education, parents with natural intelligence, social graces from my aunts (that’s where the love starts, bless their little hearts) and grandmothers and a fine time at UGA. Most of the boys weren’t so fortunate.

I was fortunate to spend my formative years with a bunch of tough, capable men, my Grandfathers and Grand-uncles (they would be to me). I remember one shooting carpenter bees out of the air at the corner of his chicken coop with a .22. I walked it with my cousin once and it was about 50 feet. I never saw him miss. He was infantry, wounded, taken prisoner in Germany, then was wounded again when the train they were being transported in was strafed by Allied planes. He passed away at 96 a few years ago. One (My Grandfather) was a “Bowhook” on an LST. His job, as he put it, was to stand to with an axe and if the ramp didn’t go down he was to bust the bow cable. He made Saipan, Tarawa, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and one other that I don’t recall off the top of my head. There is a picture of his ship on his living room wall, with a gold star for each landing. There is also a blue star that marks the downing of an enemy plane he shot down as the gunner of a 20mm battery.
One was a tailgunner on a B-29, another a navigator on a B-17. My maternal Grandfather was with the 42nd across France, Belgium, and into Germany.
They’re all gone now, but what I learned from them will never leave me. That’s why I toast tonight all Veterans.
Apologies for being maudlin but they don’t make them like that anymore and I’m thankful to have been able to spend as much time time with them as I did.

My old man was a signalman on his 4 piper and was in one of the gun buckets on a LCPR (they only had a one-man wide ramp unlike the LCVP) on 28 landings in the Pacific. When he got a commission he went to Amhpib School at Coronado and I always wonder what they could have taught him about that topic.

I think Pompeo is a bully and a dipshit, but I also think his comments are being misconstrued a bit. In my opinion, he told a dumb joke about a second Trump administration, and then he went on to say that the State department would continue functioning through whatever transition happens, pointing out that he’s been part of a transition in the past as well. I think it’s fair to say that his joke was in incredibly poor taste, but I don’t think his comments are as big of a deal that it’s being made out to be. And I hate that I even have to say something that could be considered defending Pompeo.

I believe that they’re attempting to run out the clock so that states cannot certify results in time for their constitutionally required deadlines. If that’s the case, then apparently the state legislatures could appoint a slate of electors themselves, giving Trump the hope of winning an electoral college vote with electors appointed by republican lead state legislatures instead of apportioned to their state’s voting results.
I believe that it may have been Ben Ginsburg, one of George W.’s leading attorneys in his election fight, who I heard explaining this on a podcast recently.

Well, Happy Vets day to my fellow vets – my old girl the tanker is still freaking flying. She wasnt sexy or comfortable, but if you need to fly 17 hrs straight and circle the globe, still the best. And doing a lightweight time to climb demo back in the day even dropped my jaw, and i was the one flying! I hear my property in Iraq has been repurposed, just as well, it was a hole, never made a cent on it.
Lot more vets here than you would think, much love to all.

Uncle Cowdog (Retired a Lt. Col., played for Vince) flew the KC-135 over Vietnam. One of my earliest memories was him taking my cousin and I to the base and letting us climb all over the plane. He was such a cool cat. His family didn’t see him the way I did (Think Bull Meecham) but I love the guy. When I was getting my private license he went up with me, showed me how to fly the pattern with just the trim.

Only thing I say as a vet is that I’m glad we are a volunteer service. I sure as shit didn’t want someone beside me that didn’t want to be there in Iraq.
