Your 11.21 game day post, dawg eat dog edition

What’s going to happen tonight?  Your guess is as good as mine, but I will say that a 25-point spread seems awfully generous considering that regardless of which quarterback is called on to start, Kirby Smart’s naturally conservative instincts are likely bound to kick in.

No, I don’t expect Georgia to run the ball as much as Mississippi State will pass it, but I will be surprised if we see the total number of pass plays Todd Monken calls much north of twenty.

On the other side of the ball, how will Georgia defend the Air Raid?  My guess, based on last year’s SECCG, is that Smart and Lanning will be more pragmatic than the way Kirby talked in the presser this week and play a lot of three-man line, supplementing the linebackers in pass coverage with six defensive backs.

If Georgia can dodge the turnover problems that have plagued it of late, this should be a comfortable, if boring, win.  We’ll see how it goes.

Have at it in the comments, of course.

Zeus goes for a hundy. Total rushing will be over 200yds. JT Daniels will be a statue throwing short and a few intermediate passes that are somehow more impressive than anything we’ve seen this year, going perhaps 10-16 for 140yds or so with one pick.

Defense will get tested in coverage. We won’t cover. Boring late night game. UGA 23-Missy St 13

I’ll be disappointed if Daniels throws less than 20 passes. At some point we need to see what he can do with his arm and if our receivers are actually improving.

Time to bake a cake and pull all the ingredients out of the pantry. Year is over and we may as well just go for it. If Daniels has at least a 65% completion rate then turn him loose. Let the RB’s loose and see what happens. Time to have some fun.

  8. Watching Fields and Trask is so depressing. And I’m remembering we are wearing those “It was just 40 years ago y’all!” patches…yeesh.

So not to hijack the thread but curious…who takes the over or under that:

Kirby wins SECCG in 3 years (not including 2020)?

Kirby wins NC in 5 years (again, not including this season)?

I don’t see Bama regressing, and see aTm and the gators ascending plus LSU is always a wild card so….I’m not taking the under for either.

Bonus question. If neither happens, is Kirby our coach in 5 more years? That would be a Mark Richt mediocrity territory.

    And Florida scores again…. sighhhhhhh

Over unders don’t really work for your first two questions.

The more interesting over/under is how many little whiny bitches from 2016 and 2020 will I have to suffer with when we do win the natty?

I’ll put that number at an unfortunate and depressing 35,000. The ones who will admit it? Under 5.

I think Kirby had some bad luck this year. He’s also still evolving as a head coach. I think we’ll be back strong next season. Don’t want to pick an over/under because it still takes a little luck, but I think Kirby is our best shot and will get us there eventually.

        Russ,
I agree with you Kirby has had plenty of bad luck this year. When he fired Coley and hired Monken I was convinced he knew he had to change and had a clear plan to do so.

For some the question is do we have another Mark Richt comparing the two after five years. With a little luck and a 4 team playoff Richt could have won a NC. Kirby was a play away in year two and like early Richt was usually just outside the playoffs at seasons end. Given the amount of available talent it’s really hard to imagine UGA not winning a Natty in the last 40 years.

I believe Kirby has learned from his many mistakes. Recruiting great players is a requirement that Kirby knew when he arrived. Being able to win a shoot out is now a requirement that he knows is no longer optional.

Kirby now has five years of HC experience. Like Saban he is extremely focused on results not media attention like Cousin Eddy at FU. Mullen was really lucky Trask was on the self when needed.

Here’s my prediction for the next five years.
I expect Kirby to put it all together and win a NC.
By then Saban will probably be retiring, Ryan Day and Lincoln Riley in the NFL and Dabo takes an obscene amount of cash to coach elsewhere. FU will realize they have a HC that’s never won a championship as a HC and he never will.

It’s funny. I’ve been critical but also have a feeling Kirbs will figure it out. He didn’t have a smaller school to test drive the waters of head coaching, and got his dream job off the bat. Which I think made the pressure crazy.

But I’ve been complaining. Why? Because we’re so damn close. So damn close. I was born Feb 1980. We haven’t won one in my lifetime. 2012 and 2017 were heartbreakers. I think we will get there but it’s frustrating because I want it now, damnit.

And I’m aware of how dumb that is. But it’s still there.

Thing is, it’s as effective in running clock as a great running game. We’ve only had three possessions in this half with five minutes left. That 25 point favorite thing is looking like a cruel joke. State is wearing our defense down offense on the bench. And with all those players absent.
Thing is, we’re just getting beat. It’s not a bizarre alignment of the stars like it was against South Carolina last year. We’re just being outplayed. Maybe the second half will be better, I hope so.

Georgia will make defensive adjustments at halftime…to take away that short pass stuff. Guess what? Leach knows that and will have a completely different scheme in the second half .
Daniels looks like Bennett. He’s had a pass batted down, thrown short passes to deep open receivers and like Mathis, he panics under pressure. I’m not down on him. He’s made some good throws and done some good things, but he’s not a huge upgrade yet.

He seems to be really getting stronger as the game goes on. I think he’s going to be fine.

Injuries to key players and defection of the starting QB led to a couple of losses which seriously affected the team’s morale. Only two games played in the last month threw off their rhythm and lack of in-game adjustments allowed a motivated team to over achieve against a listless, limping D. Seeing a starting QB hit long passes accurately and halftime adjustments seemed to light a fire under the team’s ass giving the Dawgs and fans renewed hope.
But those are lame ass excuses. The most talented team in the nation almost got their ass handed to ’em at home by a depleted, 3 star squad. That’s on the coaches. Let’s hope that the emergence of Daniels and time to heal injuries will be enough to restore confidence and competence by September 4.

Is it just me or does it look like the OL are just standing around while McIntosh is trying to get around them to find running room? They got to the 2nd level and took a break.

One thing I think this shows is we have the WR talent. That has not been the problem. QB matters so much

8 total yards rushing for UGA 22 for MSU.

I’ll always take a win that was just ugly. Please burn those black jerseys.

  118. We have a QB. For you folks who thought JT was just a USC castoff, you saw the kid who was the #2 pro-style QB behind Trevor Lawrence.

I don’t think teams are going to be daring him to beat them. Guess what? Pickens, Jackson, Burton and Robinson looked really good tonight.

If JT is a bridge to Brock Vandagriff, I’ll take him all day long next year.

While the offensive line looked awful in run blocking for the entire night, I’m looking forward to seeing what this offense does the rest of the season with #18 taking snaps.

Maybe. I want to believe but remember MSU brought 49 scholarship players to Athens. And it was still a struggle. On both sides. I am cautiously optimistic.

      • I look at JT’s stat line. With as many balls as went down the field, it’s hard to complete that many down the field against air. On the last TD, he threw 3 beautiful throws into the end zone.

The Pirate had a good plan. The freshman QB played well, but after the first drive of the 2nd half, they didn’t do anything.

Daniels is the most talented QB on the roster and he proved it tonight. As I’ve said since September, the only reason Daniels wasn’t first off the bench in Fayetteville was that he wasn’t physically ready.

I agree with you. I believe Daniels wasn’t ready until last week/this week. I was just trying to point out that there is a lot of excitement around a player who has played one game in the SEC. Tape is going to get out on him fast — will he be able to continue to deliver against teams with better depth.

Admire your optimism, left kind of apt on the rest. Yeah, this game was way off the typical “charts” for us, the run game was seriously off schedule, and that was not the plan. It should have been more even and the QB throws should have been more “outside the lines”. We won a squeaker. No doubt about it. Talent won the day, but, they “the kids” did it on their own is my opinion. That was just back yard talent that won that game.

  121. I hope Matt Luke goes home to Mississippi over Thanksgiving and gets quarantined there. He sucks. That was a historically bad showing for an O-line. So bad I have to believe that they were either horribly hung over – a la Varsity Blues, – or were just out to get Luke fired.

  122. I’m not too down on the run game/blocking. MSU ran cover zero and blitzed 2 or 3 LBs almost every single snap. A successful running game just isn’t happening against that. They made the QB coming off a torn ACL and meniscus and his WRs beat them, which they did. They sold out to stop the more more than any team I remember doing against a Georgia team. I was most surprised by the fact that Monken didn’t try running outside earlier if he so was insistent on running.

Defense? Idk. Some of it was the offense they were facing and Leach had the better of Lanning and Kirby, which was obvious when we finally went man and got beat for a 50 yard TD to a RB out of the backfield. I told my dad that Leach was baiting us to go man by hitting all that underneath early and often. Sure enough.

Also, the defense seems night and day depending on whether or not Jordan Davis is out there, though, I don’t think he would have mattered against that offense. We really ran some Joe Kines bend-don’t-break shit until those last two or three possessions.

In fine Georgia can fashion, I’m really excited about the future of the offense. Big shoes to fill at both OGs. Defense- they lost a lot but still are loaded with talent. Again, Jordan Davis will be huge imo.

Thanks for that explanation on why the Dawgs couldn’t run on MSU, jaboo52. I couldn’t make such a cogent description as I was drinking, cussing and commenting like a moronic mouth breather in addition to being an ignorant fuck. ‘Wonder what the Dawg’s staff have for an excuse?

Why wasn’t Daniels made ready for the Florida game?

Kirby has some fucking explaining to do.

Kirby is too stubborn. He’s too damn stubborn. That dumbass three and out in the third quarter where we went run-run-pass has Kirby’s meddling fingerprints all over it.

There is no reason why Daniels couldn’t have been ready to play the Florida game. No, I don’t believe Kirby’s bullshit coachspeak.

The man is too arrogant and too stubborn and he has absolutely no reason to be. He has ZERO rings as a head coach. Kirby cost us a chance to play in the SEC Championship Game this season because he stuck with the play-not-to-lose option at QB because that’s the coach he is.

He better fucking learn his damn lesson this time. He didn’t learn after turtling the offense in the 2017 National Title Game. He didn’t learn after doing the same thing in 2018 against Bama AGAIN. He didn’t learn after promoting Coley. He even still didn’t learn after hiring Monken and still trying to make the offense play-not-to-lose. Next year better be better than this year. If not, the natives have every right to be restless.

    • I was more concerned about him with our defensive approach to tonight’s game. It’s clear that a coach and not a recruiter can beat Smart, who is hoping that talent outplays scheme. Even in the after game presser he still tried to make excuses for SBIV. What crap. Quit promoting the po boy Georgia player and promote the guys who can win. Stupid defense tonight and stubborn run calls. We are fortunate that Leach didn’t throw more.

Kirby REALLY has some fucking explaining to do.

All of you here who continues to believe his bullshit prepare for this JT Daniels truth bomb to ruin your day.

Kirby could’ve used the two weeks between Bama and Kentucky to get Daniels ready and instead stuck with Bennett. Daniels was ready to go. Stubborn and arrogant Kirby Smart decided to continue to play not to lose against Kentucky and Florida like it was 1985 and you don’t need a good QB to win games.

Well, we won but what a painful to watch win. WTF was going on out there? There’s a lot to unpack but at least we now have a QB that can throw!!! How exciting is that? Hey receivers – you know what to do – so do it! All the rest – wake the fuck up and play like your lives depend on it. I saw a lot of half ass effort being displayed.

This oughta piss ya’ll off!!! ““The decisions were made were on who we felt gave us the best opportunity to win, and a lot of that had to do with mobility and Stetson’s play,” Smart said. “The kid played pretty good against Florida without George Pickens until he took the shot.”

Bennett put directed a 6-play, 61-yard TD drive that gave UGA a 14-0 lead against the Gators but was injured on his scoring throw.

“Then it kind of all went downhill,” Smart said. “As Stet struggled, we had to look for other options.”

Smart said the real story is how Daniels handled things when he was relegated to third string behind Bennett and D’Wan Mathis the first six games of the season.

“Let’s make the discussion about how well JT handled it in a world where nobody handles things very well when they don’t get what they want,” Smart said. “What he did is he said, ‘Coach, I want to come down to the scouts and I want to throw and I want to be part of the game plan.’

“And he came down with me and went every day against what I think’s a pretty good defense … he made plays, he moved around in the pocket, and he started showing us that, ‘hey, I can do this thing.’ He took the bull by the horns and he took advantage of it tonight.”

Yet again our first half D looked like Lanning already has an HC job offer in hand, College D coordinators’ stocks are falling fast, so maybe hes gonna cash in before it’s too late. The last drive before the half by Monken & Daniel was absolutely incredible. By the way, game ball goes to Burtons two HANDs- he snatched a bullet out of the air I haven’t seen by a UGA WR since AJ. Overall, hard to imagine Vandagriff beats out JT, so hope he’s OK grooming 1st year.

    • The problem with the defensive scheme in the first half was that everyone seemed to dropping to the sticks or beyond and a receiver or back was just going to sit down 5 yards from the LOS. Easy pitch and catch and it was allowing MSU to play in from the chains on early downs. After the first drive of the second half, we started squatting on the five yard route. Once we did that, they struggled to do anything on early downs (it’s the Air Raid version of 8 in the box). Why we didn’t make that adjustment earlier is beyond me.
