COFH, always

Sigh.

On whether he has Thanksgiving traditions or if that is hard as a college coach…
“It’s tough to do in coaching. We have traditions a little bit for my family and for players and things like that in terms of eating. We try to always have a good meal on Thanksgiving Day, kind of after the practice in the morning, Then we also have a meal when we come back, because traditionally we would go to Georgia Tech or Georgia Tech would come to us, and we would have a big team meal Friday upon the return of all the players. So, that’s what we’ve always done.”

This is your reminder that not playing Tech this year totally sucks.  I know some of you disagree, but that just means you’re wrong.

I’m laying a marker down now.  If it’s Georgia’s fate to play in a meaningless bowl game, rather than schedule one against the likes of Texas or Northwestern or some other program I really don’t give a damn about, how ’bout the Dawgs line up the Jackets?  Remember, there is no win eligibility requirement to go bowling this season.

Hell, at least extend them the opportunity.  At a minimum, we’d get the pleasure of them turning it down out of sheer cowardice; in a best case scenario, we’d get to watch another ass whoopin’.  It’s a win-win.

Play ’em anywhere ESPN says.  I don’t care.  But make the attempt, Greg.  That’s all I’m asking of you.  Surely you’ve banked enough good will with Sankey to get his blessing for this.

And that would be a much better viewing experience than playing a motivated Cincinnati team

    • Why? I don’t get this. Everyone (including me) said we wouldn’t be motivated against Baylor last year. We were ready to play with a significantly reduced roster. I see no reason why we wouldn’t be ready to play a bowl game in a building in our home state.

I personally would rather us go to Miami and play in the Orange Bowl, but I think the Handbags are heading back to South Florida.

Honestly, I think Cincinnati is a better team and would be more motivated. I don’t need to see the WVU bowl game all over again

        • If Cincinnati is a better team than Georgia, then the recruiting services have committed a major fraud on the buying public. They haven’t beaten anyone.

ee..cincinnati is 8 wins, they’ve played somebody…I just don’t remember, care or know who they are…

There is certainly some amount of fraud with recruiting services, but I am more taking a swipe at Georgia. What is our best win? Auburn (SP+ #22) most likely, right? Are their road wins against SMU (complete beat down) and UCF worse than that? Not significantly according to SP+ (UCF is #16 and SMU #30). We got flat out beaten by the two great teams we played. They haven’t played UF or Alabama, and they would have likely lost as well. But, they have a 3 year starter at QB who can run. They play hard and have a decent defense. We are what our record says we are – and eking out a win against MSU is not indicative of a good trajectory. So, all in all, I am not looking forward to another potential embarrassment on a big stage.

  2. I’m in favor of this, totally. I was in attendance at the Jasper Sanks game back in 1999, I remember all the AJC commenter threads after the 2008 games where the Tech trolls always commented on Georgia stories with the “45-42” b.s., and I remember the squib kick vividly. Beating the hell out of Tech is always fun.

Anytime we can beat Tech in anything is a happy day for me. This year in particular, I’d much rather play Tech than any meaningless bowl game.

If you remember the last time this game wasn’t played, say ‘hi’ to Calvin Coolidge for me…and Wyatt Earp, and Claude Monet and Rudy Valentino.

It ain’t Thanksgiving if they don’t get what’s perennially coming to them. Some turkeys are not meant to be pardoned.

Ehhh. I love playing them in the regular season every year but for some odd reason I just have no desire to see us play in a lesser bowl game just to get to play them this year.

  4. Yeah, at least this year they can’t start a fight with our star receiver, or hurt our star RB before we play the biggest game of the year.

I’d rather not wait until next year’s opener in Charlotte to play a team with a pulse.

  6. The tie-ins are still there. We would only be able to play Fech in the Gator or Belk. That assumes either of those games would be willing to extend an invitation to the nerds.

    • Until the Drought is on the ash heap of college football history and they beg to end the series because they are dropping to Group of 5/FCS, I’ll never get tired of slapping Fech around.

Parity is for the NFL. Only in selecting bowl matchups or the playoff field should parity be considered. For rivalries and non-conference games I’m all about a lopsided matchup as long as the lesser team isn’t from outside the southeast. Football should be local unless it’s a huge game. Everyone should play their neighbors, even if it goes through long cycles of beat downs, like we suffered at the hands of UF for a long time.

I don’t look forward to the next time we lose to Tech but that inevitability is a huge part of what makes CFB great. I’m glad we never quit playing UF or UT.

And while we’re at it, make Texas play A&M, Mizzou Kansas, Pitt WV, Nebraska Oklahoma, etc.

  12. Senator,
What teams would you really like to play? Not counting the probable play off teams that we won’t be eligible to play of course.

    • It’s too weird a year to seriously consider other teams, IMO. Georgia Tech or bust, assuming UGA doesn’t make it to a NY6 bowl game or better.

#9 in CFP is going to slot us in Atlanta or Miami. We’d likely have to lose one of the remaining games to fall out of a NY6 at this point – which I wouldn’t want even though like you I’d like to kick tech in the teeth in Jacksonville or something.

The only alternatives I’d consider would be a rematch with what’s left of the post-SECCG Gators in Miami, Atlanta, or Jax.

This is glorious idea! I just dont believe unless Kirby walks into McGoofys office and demands the offer be sent to Tech it has any chance. The only thing in our favor Kirby hates them too and might do it.
I`ll never tire of stomping Tech. It beats some meaningless bowl game.
This season is now about getting ready for next year. Crushing a rival is a great start.

  15. Historically, the best thing about COFH was the water cooler talk the following Monday when someone asked how your Thanksgiving went you could reply “it was great watching your Yellow Nerds get beaten like a rented mule at home in Atlanta at Richt Field!”…but now COVID has stripped us of that joy as well…I say bring Fech back…crush their spirits and their styrofoam Waffle House cups…I’d love to see it

I typed a longer comment that disappeared, so apologies if it shows up later. Net-net, I’m headed OoT for Thanksgiving. Enjoy the holiday, fellow Dawgs! As always, thanks Senator for the best CFB blog on these here internets and to all my fellow commenters for the insights, snark and general entertainment y’all provide. Go Dawgs!

    • Agreed Sir. Some of us seriously don’t know how good we have it… The great college football blogs have dwindled significantly (Albeit replaced by some pretty good podcasts). Everyone should disable the adblocker, click on some ads, and curb the politics talk outside of the playpen. We want GTP around for as long as possible!

  17. After all the shit they were popping on StingTalk (and other places I’m sure) about how Georgia was ducking the bugs by sticking to an all-SEC schedule, I would love for Kirby or McGarity or whoever to pop up on Dec. 13 like “Hey, you know what, let’s play this game after all.” And then watch the monsoon of excuses from Techies about why that just can’t be done.

I hate that the SEC which by default is on UGA end of the deal dropped the game and it further annoys me that UGA did not offer up some chicken descent to the idea like the Chickens did with Clem’s Son.

I’d be down for lighting GT up like a Christmas tree just after Christmas in a NFL stadium. I’d rather see that than Baylor or even a bigger name brand such as Texas or OU.

In my opinion the SEC and ACC should work with the Bowls to restore the in state games if the teams are not bound for the playoff. Granted UF should possibly play Miami rather than FSU. UK vs L’ville should be on the board too. I’d rather watch UK and L’ville than UK and Wake or NC St. etc.

My sources are telling me McGarity’s already working with the league office about playing a double-header against Auburn then Tech at Auburn the day after we play Mizzou. We’re just going to swing through on our way home.
