Gotta admit I didn’t see this one coming.

Waiting for the spin article about why Cochran wants out and how terrible it is to work for Kirby with anonymous sources close to the program……

If Vandy is going to hire someone outside the box, it should go WAY outside the box and bring Jay Cutler back home.

Dear God, Man…South Alabama I could see. But Vandy? Even though it’s Vandy, that is one hell of a leap from one- admittedly good- year of on-field coaching to head job in the SEC.

I’m just getting the sense maybe dude wants to get paid – take $10MM or so from Vandy for the next 4-5 years worth of work and then call it a career…

Have to ask why? No experience at position, OC or head coaching. One year at Special Teams(good job). Kirby gave him his shot at getting on the field and now wants to jump ship? Is there some drama going on at Butts-Mehre, or is he just taking a shot at the big bucks? He can recruit and he can certainly motivate players but what is his offensive and defensive scheme? If he’s hired I see an absolute train wreck coming. Show some loyalty!

Because the head coach at an SEC football program makes a whole lot more money than the special teams coordinator at an SEC football program and he wants to be a head coach and obviously believes in himself. I don’t think you ask the guy applying for the CEO job at Coca-Cola if things are toxic in his finance job at Pepsi and is that why he’s applying. Now, you might ask him what it is about his resume and qualifications that would make him an attractive hire at this point, but I don’t think a guy going and looking for advancement means that his current job sucks.

An SEC coaching contract is basically hitting the lottery even if you don’t last but a couple of years.

True. Say what you will ab out Chizick for instance, but stressed is not one of them. Set for life after one contract.

You made me think about the salaries ESPN pays it’s on screen talent at that level (SECNet). What’s it, like, 2mil per? Gotta be close to that.

Didn’t know Josh Pate was such an insider, or even a reporter. Give me a large break.

Smells like a play to stay put and get a pay raise.

  11. Didn’t he take a slight pay cut to be ST Coordinator? This is just angling for a big raise (and if it actually lands…well that’s still a big raise.)

  12. My Vandy sources tell me it’s down to Cochran and Sarah Fuller as the only two candidates even interested in the job.

Maybe they can steal Les Miles from Kansas.

I thought Mason did a decent – actually a step above decent – at Vanderbilt. No one is going to be hugely successful there. And even as bad as their season has been, I think it is rash to fire someone based on the results from this particular season. Besides that, who are they planning to hire? Oh yeah, Scott Cochran: Experience as a Head Coach: 0. Experience as a Coordinator: 0
At least there will be room for growth. Is Jimmy Sexton his agent?

    • In Mason’s seven years there, Vandy never had a winning record. I can’t imagine there are very many coaches who match that resume.

I did not realize he never had a winning season. For example, I think I read that they went to three bowls while he was coach. Still, it’s Vandy, and notwithstanding Franklin’s relative success there, I think most Vandy fans just want them to be competitive and get an upset or two each season. They have done that for the most part until this year. Still wonder who they think will want the job. Besides Scott Cochran.

Good for him. Would hate to lose Cochran after only one extremely altered “season”, but I wish him the best. I fully expect to hear Monken voice his interest in a new job very soon.

  16. I could see Lanning moving on and up, too. Feels like Kirby has dealt with more staff turnover than even Saban and we don’t even have one NC to show for it. I’m not going to make any wild claims but I have seen Kirby rail on his coaches and players and then wondered if it’s like that every day.

Kirby seems to use turnover amongst staff and players as a selling point but I do feel like you need some level of continuity to win championships. Kirby is getting w y years, at most, out of his coordinators. It’s really amazing that he stayed at Bama so long.

I pretty sure Vandy wants to be the first P5 program to hire a woman HC. So Cochran has a tough decision to make if he wants those big bucks.

I’m pretty sure a supercharged alpha male like Cochran and Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor for Athletics Candice Storey-Lee would get along great. I feel like they’d see eye to eye on just about everything. LOL.
