It’s business decision time, Dawg fans.

Three key members of the Georgia football team have decided to opt-out of the Bulldogs’ upcoming bowl game to focus on their impending appearance in the Reeses’ Senior Bowl and upcoming NFL Draft, UGASports has learned.

Tight end Tre McKitty, linebacker Monty Rice and cornerback D.J. Daniel have all decided that they will not take part in the UGA bowl game, which will be announced Sunday afternoon.

  1. Honestly, I love those guys, but after the last years, I dont think people that opt out should travel. The travel and fun and activities and swag are for people that play. I didnt think that way a few years ago. I am sure people here will proceed to beat on me and tell me Im wrong. Just how I feel currently. Our lack of focus was a major part of losing to Texas.

I think you and Kirby are on the same page. After Baker traveled with the team, he put the kabosh on it. On top of that, there’s no travel, really this year – no week of Disneyland or what have you – just in and out for the game. Bowls are going to be more like road games in 2020 than anything else.

      • oh yea, that is true. I am sure there will be something, but not nearly the same.

        • If it’s the Peach Bowl, it’s not like there’s any really travel or anything most of the team hasn’t seen before
(Though maybe some nice motivation for everyone coming back to get back to play in the Dome before bowl season for 2021)

When you pitch yourself as an NFL developmental program, you just don’t do that. It’s that simple.

    • In hindsite, thinking on Rice’s health, and reading various comments, i get it with him. Probably better PR to have him “not play due to recovery” than opt out. Baker left a bad taste in my mouth about this whole thing.

Good luck to those guys. I hope they make it to the second contract.

Can someone help me understand why one would play in the Senior Bowl instead of the team’s bowl game?

Money. They get paid for the Senior Bowl, I believe.

The Senior Bowl is coached by NFL coaching staffs and every NFL team has coaches and scouts at the practices. Outside of the NFL combine and pro days, it’s the best chance to work out for scouts and coaches and get noticed. In fact, it’s probably better than the combine or pro days because you’re actually playing football and the coaches can actually work with you.

        What he said.

Even just showing up, being professional the entire week, and being “coach-able” will improve a player’s draft profile. It’s away from college and college structure, so even little things like getting yourself to places early or late, that sort of thing, checks a bix one way or the other.

Show out in drills or game reps? You’re making serious money.

None of these guys are sure-fire first rounders. A good Senior Bowl week could have a huge impact on their NFL career arc.

I think this allows them to go to a place and train once the Holidays are over and not have to reenter the Covid protocol for the Bowl Game. This makes me think that much like we have expected that the team is going to the Peach Bowl.

  4. Welp, just read that Peach Bowl will give Georgia a chance to honor seniors pregame, if selected. Nice bit of grace there.

Think of the bowl game as a spring game vs another team like high school. If a player isn’t going to be on the roster and wants to focus on the NFL Godspeed.

  6. I expect all of CFB to see less and less players finish seasons. Or at least those players with shots at the NFL and who play for programs that aren’t playing for any kind of championship. That will continue to reduce the appeal of bowls so hopefully the playoffs for be expanded into something more proper.

Doesn’t really matter of if we like it -it’s just business and the student athlete has more power.

Honestly, with the new rules allowing red shirts for guys with 4 or less game appearances (and no restrictions at all this year), it’s a long-term win-win when seniors opt out of exhibition bowls, on a lot of levels.

Those extra Dec practice reps go to next year’s 2 deep. And then the game reps.

3 guys opting out opens up 3 more mid-year roster spots, which Kirby has indicated will be tight.

The players hopefully get to improve draft position, which in turn boosts recruiting.

    Versus one more game?

The cost-benefit ratio seems pretty clear to me.

Older NFL players are looking at this huge influx of young and very good talent and thinking “uh-oh”. It’s going to cut some careers short. This is good for the league and bad for the agents. Buyers market.

I’m happy for all of them and wish nothing but the best with their business decisions. The more successful they become the easier recruiting is for the Brand Kirby is selling. Most elite players can’t wait to get to the league.

Saban has done a great job educating his players regarding the life changing money they leave on the table when go in the third or fourth round versus coming back another year and maybe being a first or second round pick.
Hopefully we’ll soon be able to do that. Nick Chubb announcing he was coming back his senior year totally changed the 2017 roster. There were other players NFL bound that changed their mind to play one more year IMO.

Yep, all those great players following Chubb and coming back was huge and it put Georgia in the position it’s in now…being seen as a legit contender for the playoffs every year now…regardless of what know it all Herbie thinks or says.

Being honest, there are more talented players at all three of those players respective positions that need game reps. Good dawgs all of them, but I’m not lamenting this decision.

Daniel basically opted out mid season. He’s barely played the second half and there’s been rumblings on other boards that he just shut it down internally to get ready for the draft, without actually opting out on the season. I don’t think he goes above late fifth round, if he even gets drafted. If there was one case of a senior that would benefit from coming back, he’s it.

Want to the coaches heads explode wait for the change to the rules that the player can come back to college if he is not drafted. Talk about scholly limits getting screwed up big time.

Or you and your whole team could boycott the playoffs

“Since the Thanksgiving holiday, California has faced a surge of Covid-19 infections unparalleled across the United States, leading to continued daily record highs in hospitalizations and deaths.

ICU bed capacity has plunged to nearly zero in vast portions of the state as patients rush into hospitals, which are struggling to manage strains on resources and personnel.
“We’re experiencing an explosive and very deadly surge,” Los Angeles County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said.’
But hey, fuck it, let’s make and exception because it’s so goddam important, right. It’s only the flu and blog posters know way more than the people responsible for public safety. Someone is stupid that’s for sure.
