My completely irrelevant thoughts on this season’s CFP

First of all, please tell me that none of y’all plan on spending your entire day watching this bullshit.

This is, of course, the real reason the effing thing exists in the first place.

The sad reality is that there isn’t a need for anything more to cap this season off than Alabama and Clemson playing for all the marbles.  TAMU and Notre Dame have already gotten their asses whipped by those two and it’s unlikely the script is going to change in a rematch.  Ohio State has played six games and only faced two teams with a pulse (both games not so coincidentally being struggles for the Buckeyes).  Cincinnati and Coastal Carolina are both great stories, but does anyone really see them coming within 17 points of the top two teams?  Not gonna happen.

Which means we’re going to get a day of coaches whining about why their teams deserve a bid, pundits pushing their own bullshit narratives, Gary Barta’s inarticulate nonsense justifying the fix that was already in, and, as always, the usual anger when the choices are revealed as justification for another round of expansion that will be dismissed in the short run and embraced in the longer terms when the money’s there.

Ain’t college football great?

    A&M should be in.

We should play ND in Miami.

    Much better than Cincy.

So, of course, we’ll get fucked.

Why do we need to watch ND get seal clubbed in the playoffs again? Why?!?

      A&M in….
ND beat then #1 Clem, curbstomped UNC. Scrambled to play a full schedule (kudos). They’re deservedly in.
Fuck OhioSt & the Big10…..six games, really?

Rather see Cincinnati in there than A&M. They already got their ass whipped by Bama. We all know who the better team is, don’t want to see a replay….they lost their chance.

At least Cincy has some sort of argument, they haven’t played them …..we don’t know. It will also probably create more interest.

But I am sure they will get dat ass whipped too…..rather see a different ass whipping.

        Mmmm… we know….

A&M has pretty obviously improved. They played alabama a week after beating Vandy 17-12.

A&M lost to the best team in america, beat the east champ and has won 7 straight sec games.

An argument can be made for any of it. From my seat, A&M got their ass beat & they will get it beat again…..

As far as them improving, that is subjective….hard to say with considering who they played. Outside of Bama & UF, don’t believe they played any top 20 teams.

But for the most part, if teams stay healthy….they all improve, it’s relative.

Definitely don’t want to see A&M in there…..they will not be in there anyway imo, mute.

There’s not an available 4 seed that wouldn’t open as less than a 10 point dog. I think A&M would hold up better than the other options.

Won’t argue that, just saying a second ass kicking would not be interesting to me & probably most.

Let them play an undefeated Cincinnati. It would be more interesting….and probably shut some people up.

A&M had their chance, don’t deserve another…..nonetheless, looks like neither Cincy or A&M will not get in there.

  5. I won’t watch a second of it. We’re pretty sure we know where we’re going and whom we’re playing. I’ll look at the release of the rankings online.

This group of DGD seniors gets 3 home games, no Senior Day (sorry, Gary, honoring them at MBS isn’t the same thing as honoring them at Sanford) and a one night trip to Atlanta as a reward for their efforts.

A&M and ND losses notwithstanding, they’re still more deserving than Ohio State (note I said deserving, not better). But Mammon rules the day so ND and Ohio State are the other two teams.
Gag me but the Death Star, and the Gawdly Dabo featuring the Lovely and Talented Trevor Lawrence, are a level above.
Since Corch is gone, I wouldn’t be too upset if Ohio State bites either one in the ass. That’s about as much excitement as I can work up.

Are we gonna get “The Somewhat Big Name With Two Losses” (I guess that could be us) or “The Up And Comer Looking To Prove It Belongs”? And where?
If Kirby handles this right I’m hoping for a bitch slapping on the order of FSU in 02, Hawaii in 07, or Nebraska in 12.

  10. It’s Clemson and Alabama’s world, and for the life of me Ohio State continues to benefit from having their former signal caller as the mouthpiece for the media narrative surrounding college football. Convince me that the BIG is any better than the PAC or Big 12 and deserves the credit that they get? A flash in the pan Minnesota and always flopping Penn State does not a conference make. Their second best teams were Indians and Northwestern? Serious, the fuck is that?

Just go ahead and blend the SEC and ACC and call it semipro at this point. The likes of Duke, Vandy, and even Tech can form another P5 conference and the BCS might be relevant again, as the bigs just bash each other’s brains out trying to live in Clemson and Alabama’s world, but profiting majorly in the process.

Eh, ohio state actually hung with clemson last year and ran alabama out of the building to win the first cfp in 2014 so as a program I’d put them in the same tier as Bama and Clemson during the playoff era. This year? Who fucking knows? I could see them all of a sudden pulling their shit together just as easily as I could see the beginning of another big 10 CFP drought of not scoring ala 2015 until last year.

Is what it is… Just hoping Georgia gets a better draw than Cincinnati. Only people that will be excited about that matchup is the folks from that conference and the usual suspects that always pull for the ‘wanna be’s, we get no respect’ crowd. Georgia wins – it’s expected. Georgia loses and it will be all you hear until the kick-off against Clemson. If they win – nobody cares. They were supposed to beat Cincinnati. Hate these games…

Ideally, they draw a better match and a fun game breaks out. So I’ll be interested in that and who UF gets. Would love to see Mullen end the year with a three game losing streak… 🙂

Damn Senator. What a dreadful take…that is 100% correct. This season has thoroughly laid bare what was already known, that it’s all about the money. Honestly, I feel bad for the players. Without more rights, they’re just pawns in this whole racket. The playoff has jumped the shark less than a decade in. A lack of recruiting parity has created a world where no one cares about college football at large after mid-December outside Tuscaloosa AL and Clemson SC.

    • The only reason Clemson is where it is is the fact they play in a conference where they are rarely challenged (same damn thing Florida State had for the years of Bowden’s dominance). The Almost Competitive Conference is the Big 10 with one team that can win on big stage.

I’ll have to give props to the Clemson crowd. They stuck by Dabo when Clemson-ing was a thing, West Virginia hung 70 on them in a bowl game, and Steve Spurrier had his number in Columbia. They are reaping the benefits now, but this whole thing comes down to one event … Mark Richt’s failure to sign Deshaun Watson.

It’s a year with only two deserving teams. Too bad we can’t flex the playoff down. It reminds me of the year LSU and Bama had their rematch in the BCS – that was a one team year and LSU should have gotten the crown before any bowl games like they used to do.

This year it is difficult for any of the CFP business to have credibility. I think we can all agree BAMA and Clemson are in, but after that? Even A&M is dubious to me – good win over UF, but a beat down from Bama, and they beat Vandy 17-12? I gotta say that if there was ever a year where a Cincy or a Coastal Carolina deserves a shot it is this year. Make 4 slips of paper with Bama, Clemson, Cincy and Coastal. Put Bama and Clemson in one hat and Coastal and Cincy in another. Pull one from each hat and that is one match up; the remaining slips are the other. That way, they get 4 games, honor the records of the baby teams, and get the Alabama – Clemson final that you want. Problem solved.

Put them both in and maybe that will shut them up once and for all… 50 point difference in games, where the other team is running it’s 3rd unit in the 4th quarter can be humbling.

I agree with this. If ever there was a year to throw the Group 6 a bone, this is it. Put Cincinnati and/or Coastal Carolina in there with Bama and Clemson. It would be like a scrimmage before the big game.

These talking heads will literally talk about the act of debating a topic as though it was its own separate event which is actually the true essence of the sport of college football. “It’s all about the debate.”

I would chose anOSU over ND, but then, I wouldn’t chose ND at all.
TAM is and should be pissed.
This is reason enough for the SEC and every other conference that’s tired of getting screwed by Mickey to opt out of the CPO system and establish their own (something like the BCS) and auction off the television rights to the high bidder.

Few to zero fans in stands…leagues beginning play a month apart..big 10 and PAC have played 6 or less games… the opt outs… the random Corona rules adopted by each league…. the game cancellations leaving holes in schedules… the forward thinking big 10 cancelling season and then putting some bs together last minute when they realized they fucked up and still get a playoff spot which was obviously going to happen from the get go.. the cancellation of rivalry games if not in same conference…through it all still have to listen to these D-bags like herbstreit and numerous others opine ….

25 years ago when I quit drinking I took a year off because it was difficult to stay involved the way I had without it. Then I found out college football was something I really enjoyed even though it, like everything else, changes. For as long as I an remember people bitch about too many and meaningless bowls now there are fewer (not less) but the bitching is the same.
