When I worked for ESPN full time, I put out a weekly article entitled the Vegas Power Ratings. I still have all the sources that I used to produce that article as it featured my plus/minus ratings which closely resemble Vegas’s numbers as well as three different casinos including the fine folks over at the Westgate Las Vegas Sportsbook @SuperBookSports.
This is not the AP poll but gives you an idea of how much teams would be favored over another team if they met on a neutral field.
And…
Yep, not the same Georgia team that lined up against Bama or UF

True… UGA would only lose to ‘Bama by 15 on a neutral field. 😉

The Dawgs, at #4, are closer to Ok State at #20 than Bama at #1.

Senator, does Florida’s success last week make you feel like Clemson can do the same? I was of the opinion that this year’s Bama team is a lot closer to 2019 LSU (but with a better defense). I think I still feel the same but Lawrence is so good and the Clemson defensive line is so good that I think they will have a competitive game within the above margin.

I already thought Clemson was going to give ‘Bama all it could handle.

What was your feelings prior to the 2019 game vs the ass kicking the bammers took afterwards….

The difference then vs now is Clemson’s defense, which was all-world then and not so much now.

I’ll be shocked if they stay within 7.

Yes, Clemson can do the same….lose.

This points to something the last two years about Kirby Smart no one really wants to admit:
We’re underachieving, and it’s his fault. First with the decision to promote Coley and then with the decision to stick with Bennett / Mathis over Daniels who could play by his own and Daniels’s admission because he wanted a mobile QB to “help the run game.”
Kirby needs to get the fuck out of the offense and let Monken do whatever it is he wants to do in 2021. It’s obvious he’ll keep making the wrong, play-not-to-lose decisions otherwise.

No, no it doesn’t.

I kind of agree with you, as you state it above.
I do think that using the current season’s QB situation is a bit harsh though. Kirby appeared to be “all in” on Newman, and based on all the hype over the summer, it was a good plan. Yes, CKS still may have stuck with Bennet too long, but the information going into that decision will never be public.

You’re one of the only people that thinks Daniels was healthy enough to play against UF.

If by “only one” you also include Kirby and Daniels, who both said he was okay to go earlier than he did. 🤷🏻♂️

Have you considered that maybe there is a difference between cleared by a doctor to play and being mobile enough to move around in the pocket?
LikeLiked by 2 people
Doug, they both said he could go. Not just cleared by a doctor, but that he could actually play. The quote is direct from Kirby. He said he stuck with Bennett and Mathis for Kentucky and Floriduh because he truly believed having a more mobile QB would be better for the run game (who cares about the WRs running open downfield, right?) and that was his priority. Jeez, some of us are just as bad as the Barners who keep insisting no one actually turned down their coaching job because no one was actually “offered” the job.
I know you’re angry about me talking about this Senator, but the denial around it among the fans and Kirby remains strong. And no one in the media has pressed him on it to make him confront it and that’s frustrating, too. If he would just admit he made a mistake, it would show growth and the ability to make better decisions moving forward. I can’t take it on faith anymore. We’re so damn talented and we keep underachieving and the last three wins are more bittersweet than sweet.
And I’m sorry, but there are plenty of things here that others “hammer,” I’m not alone in that.

I’m not angry, I’m bored.
The idea that expressing this thought over and over again is somehow going to change what you call the denial of others is itself a form of denial.

That’s a fair point. Doesn’t change the frustration, of course. 2017 was one thing, we could say, “He’s still a new coach, and yeah, his fourth quarter offensive decisions cost us a national title, but he’ll learn,” but now he’s in year five with his best team talent-wise, and his bad decisions have again cost us our best shot at a national title since 2017.
If more people were talking about that, if more people were holding Kirby accountable for that, then maybe I wouldn’t feel as frustrated as I do.

For the love of pixelated fuck please give this narrative a rest. Especially considering last I checked, JT is now the undisputed starter and Monken has opened up the offense to the tune of 500+ yards a game. Bennet is no longer playing, and Mathias has transferred. Point being, everything you’re wishing for, Kirby has done. Can’t we just be excited we have a QB now, beat the living crap out of Cincinnati, have a good spring and get pumped for 2021?

Can’t coach, can’t develop, can’t call plays, can’t win the big one, can’t hire, can’t quit interfering with coaches, can’t let them have the autonomy….I ain’t see can’t grow any taller just yet, but I bet that is coming.
Heck, these 4 and 5 star kids are better off going elsewhere.
Good thing the parents and recruits don’t read this blog…..or Ole “Corch” could do some damage.
I am sure he means well though.

Yeah, because I said ALL that. Oh, and we totally have control over recruits not going to UGA simply because we have the audacity to ask questions or question bad decision making.
Seriously, how do some of y’all even get out of bed to face the day when your realities are so filled with such grandiose hyperbole?

Is that rating premised on playing with the 11 players opting out, injured or flunked out? Will not be the same team without them playing.

Nearly 2 decades of coulda, woulda, shoulda since Terrance Edwards dropped that pass in Jacksonville.
The two decades prior were bad to average. Maybe these next 2 will bring us full circle.

jaboo52 you just had to mention that pass LOL. It was a little behind him and high from my seat. Clearly catchable by his admission. tOSU was able to complete several miracle 4th and longs to stay undefeated to get to that NC game against Miami. I’ve often wondered how things could have been different for CMR if that single pass is caught we are undefeated and playing his former team in the NCG. Just a few breaks CMR and has a couple of NC’s. Or one defended pass and Kirby has one already.
Given the coaching options we are very lucky to have Kirby who has learned a lot and I see a coach who has changed. I believe Monken has the keys to the offense and not Mudcat’s car. So all we need for Christmas now is for Kirby or Lanning to learn how to defend the wheel route and 2021 is NC#1 for Kirby.

If the ESPN Invitational 4 team show was in effect in 2002 we would have made the field of 4 as a 3rd seed. The way we were playing in November and December we could have beaten OSU and Miami.
