A Peach of a game day post

Think I’m just going to present this as a bunch of random thoughts and points…

  • The line shifted again this morning.  It’s now Georgia -9.5.  How much of that is due to the Dawgs’ strength and how much to the AAC’s, um… perceived lack thereof, I can’t say.
  • For what it’s worth, PFF says we’re looking at its two best defenses in this game.
  • 247Sports’ Cinci’s staff have all picked their team to win today.  That isn’t as interesting as some of the reasons why:  “If the Blackcat defense can contain the Georgia run game, they will limit JT Daniels through the air…” “Sounds like a hell of a lot has to go right for UC but that’s usually the case in these types of games.” “Cincinnati has every chance to beat Georgia on Friday and history has shown it is not that far fetched. UCF beat favorite Auburn 34-27 three years ago and Houston defeated favorite Florida State 38-24 just two years before that both in the Peach Bowl.” “Georgia, on the other hand, is kind of your typical top-tier SEC team that has plenty of eye-candy talent, but for whom the chemistry has never quite fit up to expectations.” “If Cincinnati can hold Georgia under 20, this game should be well in hand. That said, I don’t expect them to finish under 20.”
  • Back in the real world, I thought Tulsa’s success running the ball against Cincinnati’s 3-3-5 defense in their championship game raised a red flag.  So, apparently, did the Bearcats’ defensive coordinator … Marcus Freeman said Tulsa “kind of pounded on us a little bit. I think our guys understand in order to have success versus the University of Georgia, we’re going to have to stop the run. We’re going to have to do some different things. We’re going to have to put some different people in different place, make sure we have a chance to stop the run. They have an extremely good offensive line. Good stable of running backs. … We have to understand we have to stop the run, do everything in our power to stop the run, or it can be a long day.”
  • Along those lines, this from The Athletic’s Cinci beat writer:
  • Screenshot_2021-01-01 Live Q A with Georgia writer Seth Emerson and Cincinnati writer Justin Williams
  • I do think we’re going to see something of a chess match between Freeman and Monken, but I’ve gotta say I like Georgia’s chances between the two, based on what I’ve seen over the past three games especially.
  • On the other side, how well can Georgia’s defense contain Ridder?  Per Jake Rowe, “Georgia has the athletes to spy him in big situations but it’s the early-down designed runs that the Bulldogs will have to guard against. The good thing for Lanning is that he has guys like Jordan Davis at his disposal to eat up space and control gaps. If the Bulldogs are sound on the edge, they are capable of making life tough on Ridder. When it comes to third down, a guy like Adam Anderson could have a big day.”
  • As big a deal as the opt-outs might be, Ojulari opting in might be even bigger.
  • I’m starting to worry more about how Ridder fares throwing the ball.  He has a deep receiving corps and a good tight end to work with.  And Georgia will be shifting bodies around all day in the defensive backfield.  Is it too much to ask that this becomes the day Lanning figures out how to defend the wheel route?
  • There hasn’t been much talk about it, but when you talk about roster depth, an area where Georgia has the edge, that should mean an advantage in special teams for the Dawgs, amirite?

My initial thought on the game when it was announced was that it would be a tough one for Georgia.  I think Smart has learned how to approach games like this.  I also think the relatively low number of opt-outs is an indication that the team has responded well to that.  In other words, I think the Dawgs show up and cover the original 6.5-point line, getting 2021 off to a good start.

Have at it in the comments, peeps.

I think this Cincinnati team will hang around for a while. But I do think they are going to have trouble moving the ball over-all and believe that Georgia’s physicality will take its toll. Add to it, that this isn’t the offense it was a month ago. Georgia’s receiver group is very-very good and if the running game is effective, it is going to put Cincinnati in some tough positions all day long.

Looking for Cinci to blitz when they can (see Missouri’s success) and I think they will try and use misdirection, wheel routes, etc. to keep the defense off balance. If they try to play straight up with the Dawgs – they are in for a long day.

Offense is different – defense starting to look like it’s old self. Jordan back in the middle…

I think this game is over by the time we get to the 4th quarter.

    Three key matchups

    1) show me a Cincy LB that can both get off Washington’s blocks AND get into coverage with him and I’ll eat my hat. Not saying Big 0 is going or have a huge day, but he illustrates a pretty tough matchup for Cincy. Particularly as he shifts in and out of the formation.

    2) same story with Davis. He’s a different animal and one that Cincy hasn’t had to game plan for all year. I like our D against mobile QBs when the outside LBs play contain and Davis clogs the middle.

    3) Burton, Jackson, name other UGA WR not named Pickens against whoever is covering them. Pickens vs Gardner will be entertaining. But the passing game won’t be determined by that matchup. If whomever is covering our second, third, fourth option in the passing game has a good day, we better be running the ball well.

I am confident that after an early score by Cincinnati we will adjust and then stuff their offense for most of the game. We score 30 and win by at least two TD’s when we take over the game for good in the 3rd quarter.

Your analysis as always is spot on. You had to mention the wheel route….maybe Lanning decided he’s had enough too.

The running game is really gone today. We could really use Cooks speed.
Cinci has a good interior defense though.
The refs are assholes, but what else is new?
The announcers are annoying assholes too.
Cincinnati is probably the best team from Ohio…which is to say the best team north of a line running from Tuscaloosa, through Athens and over to Clemson.
Dawgs have under performed. Hope they come out a little more determined in the second half.

Our D has been “just a little wide”. Gotta let the kids learn. The O has still not figured out who they are. The dumps to the RB’s will prob save the game, if they commit to them. Eventually, our line’s will take over. Might take a while though. Hand it to Cincy. They are “leaving it on the field”.

Coaching malpractice as usual. Waste a timeout before a punt. No counter to the blitz all day long. No excuse against 2&3 stars other than coaching. The players are playing hard. Not a motivation issue

I wonder if our awesome defense can keep a two yard gain. And then our revamped offense can score to win.

I’m sure there is some bullshit advanced metric that doesn’t mean shit says we do.

How long was the kick? And you could hear the “Aw fuck” in that dickhead announcers voice.
No shit, Cincy showed up to play and they are a good team. Let’s see what happens to the Rudy’s before we start talking playoffs for a Go5, but I have to think they’d give ND a run for their money…

    Happy for the players.

Daniels was cool on the last drive, 6 was clutch. and Pods finished it.

If wearing a OAN t-shirt is reason for Grundy to give back a million, Kirby Smart owes the University of Georgia about $3 million for his coaching malpractice.

Inclined to say won one we shouldn’t have, but nothing fluky about our D against their O in the 2nd half. I think dumping the ball off to McIntosh should find a permanent place in the playbook.

If Kirby is to remain head coach, can we at least get him a little jacket and hat to wear in the fourth quarter and pay for a little Organ Grinder to stand behind him and play music instead of a man holding onto his belt?

It would be more comical than his clock management skills, but only slightly.

Now there may be a place for you driving a clown car later on now that McGarity is gone.

I think the narrative should be reversed, georgia was the plucky underdog that pulled off an upset over a superior opponent as evidenced by the fact that this was our ONLY win over a ranked opponent and it came on a last second field goal.

It certainly showed that despite having a decent game overall, the idea of Daniels going pro is pretty comical. Lot’s of things to work on for next year.

Like your enthusiasm, but we beat many ranked teams this year. At least 3, more if you include this game today.

      • charlottedawg

Uh no, the only opponents that are ranked now are alabama, florida and cincinnati. We didn’t score more than 30 points against any of them, won one squeaker today and got absolutely exposed against the other two. I’d go as far as to say florida isn’t even that good, we just sucked more.

I have knocked a lot of golf balls to the wind. Never seen a double move, and that last kick was absolutely perfect. Hard drive at first, slow drift to center, then high float for distance. That was a PERFECT kick. The ball drifted and flew just like they draw it up. The safety was awesom for the D that hung in there the whole game.

Me thinks we are ready for next year. Gotta get Daniels more serviceable.

Speaking of “Bad Beats” that safety on the last play of the game cost a bunch of people some big bucks. Line was Dawgs giving 2.5 points.

  183. We made mistakes, but we kept playing. Other than the long run in the 3rd quarter, the defense possibly played its best half of the season in the 2nd half. The offense was constipated most of the day, but JT made plays in that final drive. Pod hammered that kick, and then Camarda made up for the shank with an incredible kick-off.

Also cincinnati is exhibit A for people who said don’t get overly excited about the JT Daniels offense until they actually play somebody, a whopping 21 points is not impressive

Daniels completed about 2/3rds off his passes and went for almost 400, in spite of the fact that his clown coach kept trying to run it up the middle most of the 2nd half and his Ole Miss wash-out line coach couldn’t keep him from taking a beating.

JT, Pickens, 13 and 17 basically kept us from being a laughing stock for the entire off season.

This one really belongs to the D and to Pod Rod. The offense had one foot in the grave all day. I think (hope) it was a hic cup from all of the sit outs and players missing for other reasons.
I’ll say that Cincinnati has a very good team. They were playing at a highly tuned up, undefeated level and Georgia looked awkward. Not making excuses for the weak offensive play..just looking for reasons. In the end the right team won. It would be fun to be Pod Rod at a sorority thrown party tonight!
Congratulations to the whole team. You didn’t quit. Auburn has.

I’m watching with great interest in how ‘Bama’s defense looks.
Florida, (the team on a three game losing streak) exposed them pretty strongly. If they play defense that poorly again, it might be an exposition of a crack in their armor.

Bama’s pass defense isn’t top tier. If Clemson beats anOSU, I think they’ll roll ‘Bama. But who knows.
