Jesus. Sarkisian just hired away Saban’s special teams coach for the low, low price of $1 million a year.
Just imagine what these idiots might be doing if we weren’t in a pandemic.

I mean, as long as they can line-up the boosters with the Big Oil Money, why not?
It’s not like this is public money.

Oh, I don’t care about UT spending the money. Just wish schools would quit with the po’ mouthing and related stuff, like shutting down programs, because of COVID.

Yeah, that’s some bullshit. I don’t know if it would help or hurt (probably a little of both), but I’ve long thought it might be a good experiment to exclude football from Title IX scholarship restrictions because there is literally nothing else in female sports that compare, but because it’s included it’s almost always the smaller men’s sports like wrestling or men’s gymnastics that suffer. They’re pretty much only played by the large private schools or land grant schools in the midwest and West now.

I would be all for that if it meant that once excluded the schools kept women’s sports numbers at what they are now due to football and increased the amount of men’s scholarships to match that number. It will never happen but it would be a good idea.

Baseball – 11.7 scholarships can be divided between a maximum of 27 players on a 35-player roster, with all players on athletic scholarship having to receive a minimum of a 25 percent scholarship. That leaves room for eight walk-ons.
My son turned it down and went with a full academic scholarship.

It think in UT’s case it’s also a big ol’ pile of Joe “King of Torts” Jamail court settlement money (and if you’ve never seen it, I highly recommend watching Texas Style Deposition on YouTube.)

I’m just glad he didn’t pursue Scott Cochran. I wonder if Little Nicky is going to come calling him to come back to T-town.

This is my worry. Our only hope is Cochran is still pissed at Saban for telling him he couldn’t coach and a sense of loyalty to Kirby for giving him his big time shot. Another couple of years of coordinating a top-notch ST unit combined with growth in recruiting and Cochran could easily be a head coach in CFB. If Sam Pittman can do it, why not Cochran?

Coaching and loyalty … together those are 2 words that went out a long time ago. If Bama wants him and throws the money on the table, I would assume Cochran jumps (especially because he can go back to working on his Alabama state employee pension).

I’m pretty sure he and Kirby are friends and if I had to guess, Kirby is much better to work for than Saban.
That said, I don’t really know what he’d be hiring Cochran back for.

Potentially as special teams coach now that Cochran has proven he can do the job

Wouldn’t be surprised if the UGA special teams coach received a significant salary increase, along with several other UGA staff members….it’s that time-o-season….

I don’t think he will either.

Special teams coach at Alabama is almost purely a recruiting gig. Not exactly a proven area for Cochran.
It’s going to be Sumlin. AL roots, major connections in Houston and southeast Texas, former head coach in SEC and P12.

If Sark is not Mack Brown or Royal then does that mean that no one can do it at Texas? Did they try to hire Matt Campbell? He seems like he would have been very successful there.

At Texas that is belt tightening.

If I’m the Tex punter, I’d be telling my coach that dropping a punt in the 20 in a close game is gonna cost you 5 grand.

Of all Saban’s coaches this was probably the one he was ok with. Special teams have not been their strength.

He’s also a hell of a recruiter, but damn. The boosters are all in here.

If money could buy Texas playoff relevance, they’d be a fixture by now.
Likeliest outcome here is Texas rising at TAMU’s and Oklahoma’s expense. Texas fans will be happy in the short run, it will make the OU/Texas rivalry interesting again, and Jimbo will have to move quickly while LSU and Auburn try to reset and Alabama reloads.

Donor: Here’s a million to cover our football coaching expenses.
AD: Why thank you! Listen, we need $10 grand for the women’s team uniforms. Think you could….
Donor: Hahahaha! What…you think I’m made of money? Hell no.
