Musical palate cleanser, readers’ choice, part five

I knew I’d wind up finishing this week’s theme with something inspired by this comment.  That Modern Lovers album is one of the greatest ever American rock albums ever recorded.  I’ve played the crap out of it over the forty-plus years I’ve owned it. Just a straight out classic.

From it, here’s the one and only “Pablo Picasso”.

(More Modern Lovers here.)

This has been fun.  Thanks for all your suggestions.

Cool video, great tune. Until a quick search I always thought it was Modern Lovers doing this in Repo Man. It was Burning Sensations covering it. Repo Man was another movie elevated by the presence of Harry Dean Stanton.

I had no idea this was a Modern Lovers song: I’d only heard the Burning Sensations version from the Repo Man soundtrack. One of my favorite movies from my high school years. That’s a soundtrack that still holds up well. Didn’t know there were different lyrics to TV Party until the last couple of years.

And truly, HDS does make everything better. Also, the guy who was the drug kingpin in Clear and Present Danger was one of the punks in that movie.

“No movie featuring either Harry Dean Stanton or M. Emmet Walsh in a supporting role can be altogether bad.”

Wow. Just dove into their self-titled album on Spotify. This one is going into purchase mode…..

  5. I love the Modern Lovers! A friend of mine turned me on to them about 12-15 years ago, and man, what a great album. I know Roadrunner was sort of their bigger hit, but Pablo Picasso is definitely my favorite.

The band, of course, featured Jerry Harrison, later of the Talking Heads.

    Try these:

“A Place In The Sun” – Pablo Cruise
Picasso’s Last Words (Drink To Me) – Paul McCartney and Wings

    The Modern Lovers are excellent.

I came across the website for Radio Garden last week and figured some of the music lovers here might like it. It uses a Google Earth style interface to allow you to quickly connect to streaming radio stations all over the world. I like using it on a computer because you have a bigger screen which is easier for a map interface, but they have android and ios apps too. Just google radio garden and you’re ready to go when you click on their link. Free and fun like I like it.

Digging this album as we speak, Friday night date night at home…
My wife just did a little hip shuffle to “Pablo Picasso” across the living room. I think I love her….
