You know, I wasn’t going to mention the Rush Propst tape that popped up this weekend, in which he claims detailed knowledge about how Alabama and Georgia are paying recruits and players — for one thing, to observe that Propst has monumental credibility issues is almost an understatement, and for another, not being able to pronounce Nick Chubb’s name correctly just adds to that — but I can’t let this bit of unintentional comedy slide without saying something.
WHAT? NO WAY! I know this is going to come as a complete shock to all of you, but it looks like Georgia and Alabama are allegedly (this word was inserted at my lawyer’s request) swinging bags of cash to secure the talents of the nation’s top teens.
Do I believe pretty much every word of that without even blinking? Absolutely. Do I think Georgia and Alabama are the only schools doing that? Absolutely not. But I do know that Georgia is especially egregious.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen some out-of-state kid with absolutely no previous connection Georgia trend towards another school for months with the Bulldogs seemingly not even in the conversation only to suddenly commit to Georgia – sometimes even before stepping foot on campus. It could not be more obvious, and anyone who follows recruiting even a little bit could tell you. It ain’t exactly a secret.
Does my beloved alma mater do this, too? I genuinely don’t know. At the very least, they aren’t doing it in broad daylight and daring anybody to say something like Kirby’s been doing in Athens for years. So they’re either clean or much better at hiding it.
“I genuinely don’t know.” Dude. Ohio State hired Urban Meyer with the express purpose of bringing OSU’s recruiting up to SEC standards. What exactly did y’all think that entailed? But, sure, your program is as clean as the driven snow. I’ll try to stop giggling now.
And he manages to praise the shot selection of their basketball team after we whipped their ass and are headed toward a #1 seed!

I’m confused by all of this? Who secretly recorded who? Who is making the allegations? And what is the point of leaking the audio? Is someone trying to protect themselves or is the point to injure UGA and/or Bama? And who secretly records a HS coach? Must be some background to this story I am not understanding

Haven’t heard this audio but there is currently tons of bad blood going down with Probst and a lot of airing of dirty laundry. I saw a transcript from a pending law suit that made the entire bunch in Valdosta look like clowns all based on the hiring of Probst.
Interesting side note Hall Mumme was mentioned as interviewing for the job.

There have been several, but for the record I don’t care and never have cared that this goes on. Riley Ridley is probably the most prominent example.

My understanding is that Ridley came for a visit and just didn’t leave – was suddenly an early enrollee
LikeLiked by 1 person
That’s true, I forgot Riley actually had unofficial visits. He did enroll and start school before he actually committed, but he had seen the campus. That may be a distinction without a difference, though.

I had technically “seen” the campus in the 3 minutes it took to drive from college state road to downtown, but I committed (“mom, i’m going here”) before the transmission was shifted to park.
Point being, somebody of JT Daniels’s ability and aspirations has about 3 or 4 transfer options, max, considering roster depth plays a role. With a relatively open chance at a place like Georgia, about all it would take is “yeah, Athens is cool.”

We recruit at the same level of Georgia and Alabama, but they’re only at our level because they cheat.”

So of course rival fan bases of the two (especially Auburn) is jumping all over this. Auburn! They group that invented ‘dropping bags’ is out-raged. You cannot make this stuff up…
He’ll play this up until it quits drawing attention and move on to something else to draw attention.
One thing I am sure of; any shot of him getting a coaching job anywhere in the states of Georgia or Alabama just went down the tubes once and for all. To be fair, he had worked very had to guarantee no school would touch him, so this is just the cherry on top.

Rush Propst is an angry, bitter man. He’s angry that his secret family was exposed; he’s angry that he lost out on his chance to coach at Bama when Saban found out about that secret family. He’s bitter that he had to go to the state of Georgia to work. He’s just bitter all the way around. So of course he is going to make unfounded claims against the school he hates and the school he loved that spurned his ass.
And the OSU guy latching on to these claims? Reminds me of elephants and donkeys screaming that the other party plays partisan politics.

Considering that UGA (and Bama, who also was implicated) have lost out on quite a few recruiting battles to OSU in recent years for top recruits, either the writer believes that: 1. OSU is also paying recruits. Or, 2. That recruits turned down lucrative sums of money to play for UGA or Bama, and instead chose to play at OSU for free.
If the answer is #1, then the entire topic is a non-starter. If the answer is #2, then the OSU blogger so delusional for his fanboy support for OSU that it’s pointless to discuss it further.

Y’all would be shocked at the number of people that will jump on this though. It wasnt that long ago UF fans here will telling me how much georgia cheated and paid players. I had no idea what they were talking about but its junk like this. Now AU is stated in this thread of jumping on it. I absolutely guarantee the OU guy I know here, who tells me every year how “stacked” OU is and this is the year, believes it. If the same dude said UF was cheating, a ton of Georgia fans would jump on it.

” But I do know that Georgia is especially egregious”… ???
Georgia is egregious.
Not Georgia’s behavior or actions, but Georgia is egregious.
We’re dealing with one dumbass of a bunny here.
(I hope he gets a friendly letter from UGA’s lawyers inviting him to publicly retract these statements and apologize to Georgia).
Then he follows that up with this illiterate attempt at a statement:
” but it looks like Georgia and Alabama are allegedly (this word was inserted at my lawyer’s request) swinging bags of cash to secure the talents of the nation’s top teens.”.
This is a dumb coward’s way of slandering two institutions and being stupid enough to think his responsibility for the accusation is nullified by a false disclaimer. “Allegedly” isn’t a magic word. Besides, it’s misused here.
If using “alleged” (or some form of it) will insulate one from the responsibility of making any dishonest slander or rumor, then everyone’s reputation is in unfounded jeopardy.
So Propst consulted his lawyer before saying all of this? (Sure he did. Any lawyer worth his salt would kick him in the ass for even hinting that he was going to put this shit out)
I can’t imagine any lawyer accepting him as a client unless he was under a court order to do so.

Honestly not trying to get political here, and not pointing fingers at any group, but this is the era of alternative facts and doublespeak. Truth is negotiable, and not the point of editorializing-posing-as-journalism anyways. He can absolutely get away with using “allegedly” as a CYA catch-all.

Because winning is more important than your reputation at some places. Urban proved that. Say what you want about Propst but he gets results (like Urban) even if the stench around the program becomes almost unbearable. The question is are you willing to pay the extremely steep price (and I’m not talking dollars here) to get that result that he brings. Very much like selling your soul to the devil (or maybe it is actually selling your soul to the devil).

From what I read was that Probst back doored every (or almost every) other coach that applied by having someone go to them and poor mouth the Valdosta touchdown club or board of education so they all backed out and he was able to step in and save the day.

That’s not a surprise as that would be right in character for him. What is a surprise is that ANY team would give him a job knowing all the baggage that comes with him. That just goes to show that in some places winning HS football games is not life or death. It’s much more important than that. Important enough to sell your soul to the devil.

An OSU has a commit from the top QB in Texas. Maybe the kid made a lot of trips to Columbus during a pandemic on his own, but the “commit without setting foot on campus” charge is a pretty dumb one to throw when the NCAA is restricting visits.
Or his just bitter that Bama beat them so soundly they can’t even claim “well if Justin Fields’s shoulder had been 100%…” would have made much of a difference.

I still don’t understand how Valdosta was able to hire this man. I remember reading that they had to have a couple votes over it. I guess the school board usurps the the vast majority of a community. I have no dog in the fight but found it fascinating that most(fans, families, former players, teachers and a couple former VHS and UGA) down there opposed it and very publicly in some cases.
As for the allegations- I assume the usual top recruiters pay. I’m only concerned with which Georgia Way surfaces should actual evidence surface. Reading that blog and it’s comments just reminded me of how delusional some hard-core fans are.

Valdosta was a he gold standard for Georgia High School football beginning with Bazemore and continuing on through Hyder. As Atlanta grew larger and the high schools in metro Atlanta got better at football Valdosta fell from it’s perch.
Herron at Camden County made them the class of South Georgia and Lowndes as the county school attracted more money and many of the better players. For some reason the powers that be at Valdosta decided it would be worth it to take Rush after he lost the Colquitt job and now it looks like he’ll take whatever they have left with him as he implodes again. I was never a VHS fan until recently due to them beating us in the 1992 state Championship game. This incident will probably relegate the Wildcats to some more lean years. If only they could have seen it coming.
