Musical palate cleanser, moar cover battle edition

Enjoyed reading all the suggestions in the comments yesterday, though I’d already put together a week’s worth of MPC posts.  Still, this one’s kind of funny, in that it’s close, but no cigar close, to a couple of things that were mentioned.

So, here goes.  In this corner, the original:

The Isleys’ version is fantastic, but Lennon’s vocals are iconic.  Gotta go with the Beatles here.  Plus, it was Ferris Bueller’s choice.

And you?

There’s a Covers Channel on Sirius XM radio, channel 302 I think. I was driving home the other day and heard an acoustic cover of Sandstorm and I immediately thought of this blog. I can’t for the life of me remember who performed it though. It was interesting that it sounded so different yet immediately recognizable at the same time, which is probably true of a lot of cover songs.

    Other covers I’ve enjoyed:

The Disturbed cover was the one I referenced yesterday. Simply astounding.

I also heard a version of Bill Withers’ “Use Me” by Mick Jagger (featuring Lenny Kravitz). I liked Kravitz’ voice better than Jagger’s, but I’d still take the original over the cover.

I really like the Beatles version live. Prefer the Isley Brothers album cut. Lennon’s vocals are iconic but the Isley’s rhythm section makes it swing.

Second half of the Isley Brothers gets good, for any celebration Ferris Buellers day off….The Beatles causes me to tap toes, fingers pretending i can sing a tune and walk at the same time….

  3. Both are great, but I will go with the Beatles version too. Iconic, joyous, perfect.

    Great topic!

  4. Salty Dawg

My vote goes to the Isley Bros. It has soul and the Beatles did a good job emulating that, but give me the original.

  5. Covers Better Than Originals:

    Hendrix All Along the Watchtower
    Byrds My Back Pages
Manfred Mann The Mighty Quinn (see a pattern here?)
Mamas and Papas Dedicated to the One I Love
Beatles Twist & Shout (but just barely)

  6. Michael Cera: These Eyes – the awesomeness starts at 1:12 but the whole clip is worthy (NSFW though)
