Getting ahead

Hey, with regard to that whole “Georgia’s offense is ahead of Georgia’s defense” vibe, weren’t we saying the exact same thing in 2019?  As I recall, that take didn’t age well.

I’m not saying history is doomed to repeat itself.  For one thing, Todd Monken is no James Coley.  But I’m not taking it for granted, either, at least until I see it on the playing field.

I think the surrounding cast beyond Pickens is better than what was around Holloman. Not to mention difference in playcallers

James Coley is gone. I take comfort if that.

The last time UGA scored more than 30 points against a ranked opponent was 2018 against Kentucky. JT padded his stats against the 105th (msu), 96th (usc) and 84th (missouri) ranked pass defenses in the country. Against the one competent pass defense they faced (#39, Cincinnati) jt and the offense managed a grand total of 22 points. I would definitely pump the brakes on the “OMG, offense is gonna be awesome!!!!” narrative until they like, actually do something on the field.

    • There is some truth to this. That said, I watched receivers run wide open all season. Monken is a visible, obvious upgrade from Coley.

    • I’ve been wondering about this, too, but then I go back to the Cincy game and think about how many times we had WRs 5+ yards behind their man and we underthrew it. We should have scored 30+ on them but, once again, we lacked the precision at QB to make it happen. That has to change this year. We have to hit WRs in stride.

      I don’t understand the pessimism.
You don’t get to pick the schedule. JT was awesome in those games, which were all WINS. Let’s not forget a lot of our players opted out of the Cincy game too.
Year two with a competent OC and a strong armed, accurate QB that is also taller than 6’? Sign my ass up.

Plus the OL was apparently drawn out of a hat the week before the game. I’m hoping for a little consistency with OL assignments going into fall camp.

Of course, in 2019 it was because of what was supposed to be a set of very obvious gifts on the offensive side of the football including a returning two-year starter who had played in a national title game. This year, we have offensive gifts, but we also had a defensive backfield that’s just the shrug emoji on your phone. I’m much more willing to believe that the offense is going to lead the way this season.

Also, in 2019 we were just taking it on faith that Coley was going to be able to scheme and call a creative passing offense at least as well as Chaney could, and looking back we had zero justification for that hope. We’ve seen Monken coach for a year and we at least know that he can get receivers open and find room for running backs to work. So we’ve at least got some proof of concept there.

      • my only faith was that Kirby made a really bad decision as HC to promote and unproven guy internally instead of shopping, primarily based on being a good recruiter. With zilch OC experience. We are supposed to be better than that now.

You guys keep trashing smash mouth football derisively calling it manball. Frankly Georgia had gotten too soft under CMR. Kirby instilled toughness in Georgia football and it showed. I remember 2017 when we came within a blown ref’s call of winning the national championship using that style of play. Football is about beating the man in front of you and it always will be.

Well, as far as we can tell Daniels doesn’t key into one receiver like Fromm did (holloman, Cager, and I’d even include Ridley on that).
