Two bold predictions…

… from 247Sports’ Brad Crawford:

Georgia Bulldogs

Bold prediction: JT Daniels sets single-season record for passing yards. Georgia’s current program high is 3,893, set by Aaron Murray during the 2012 season. If Daniels stays healthy and the Bulldogs play 14 games (regular season, SEC Championship, bowl) this season, he only needs 279 yards per game average to eclipse that mark. Daniels as the Heisman winner could be another bold prediction as long as Georgia’s other top-end wideouts produce in the wake of George Pickens’ absence. Given his success last season in short order down the stretch, Daniels should be one of college football’s most prolific quarterbacks in 2021.

Florida Gators

Bold prediction: Dan Mullen’s team is 4-3, outside of the Top 25 going into the Georgia game. Don’t shoot the messenger, Florida fans — this is a bold prediction after all. The Gators won’t be favored at home vs. Alabama or on the road against LSU prior to the open week pre-Georgia and we’ve already mentioned previously that Kentucky may take out two SEC titans in Lexington this season. But even if this doomsday scenario happens for the defending SEC East champions, the backend of the slate is soft enough for a strong finish after the rivalry showdown in Jacksonville.

Let me go out on a limb here and say that if he’s right, I’m gonna have one big ol’ shit eating grin on my face in Jacksonville this year.

PAWWWLLL!!!, a master at work

There’s amateur trolling, and then there’s Finebaum, a pro’s pro.

“I don’t want to say anything blasphemous a week and a day after Easter Sunday, but Alabama-Auburn is no longer really the driving rivalry, I think, in the Southeastern Conference,” Finebaum said on the show. “Because everyone understands the reality of it. Nick Saban is going to win, maybe 92.3% of the games or whatever.”

If that’s your rivalry barometer, then Georgia-Florida stopped being a rivalry around 2000.  But I digress.

Finebaum added that his show provides him a good barometer of how heated a rivalry can currently be based on his callers’ reactions.

“I don’t want to speak for you because you live there and I don’t anymore but, on my program, which you know, is a more of an SEC-centric show — if I want to just drop some blood into the water and see sharks circling, it’s about Georgia or Florida. And it’s vicious,” Finebaum added.

“They love nothing more than to remind Georgia fans they haven’t won a national championship in 40 years. It doesn’t matter what Kirby Smart has done, so yeah, I think this is a continuum of the SEC’s current-day great rivalry. And it is vicious.”

If reminding Georgia fans they haven’t won a national championship in 40 years is his definition of a heated rivalry, then we’ve got a heated rivalry with just about every fan base in the SEC, plus Georgia Tech, because that tired line is trotted out by plenty of folks other than Gators on a daily basis.

But that’s not whom Finebaum is really targeting with that, anyway.

The ESPN host went a step further and got in a dig at Auburn’s place in the Iron Bowl rivalry and its former coach.

“Even the most ardent Auburn fan has almost just waved the white flag when it comes to (Nick) Saban now,” he concluded. “Yeah, you know (Gus) Malzahn won three times, which is extraordinary, still got him fired, didn’t he?”

Glad we could be of service, Paul.  By the way, if you’re looking for intense SEC rivalries, you might want to check out Ole Miss – Mississippi State.  Talk about vicious…

What a difference a year makes

From no spring practice at all to this ($$):

Overall, the fact there are 16 early enrollees has been huge. Georgia is only waiting on four signees, plus Tykee Smith and anyone else that’s added via the transfer portal. Otherwise, the Bulldogs are wrapping up five weeks of practice and scrimmages with what will basically be their 2021 team.

If you want to know why I’m decidedly optimistic about this team’s chances, that’s it in a nutshell.

Delusions of grandeur

C’mon, Gus.  Have you really thought this through?

I’m not sure “fun” means what he thinks it means.

Musical palate cleanser, life ain’t fair edition

If a band ever deserved a better fate than it got, Badfinger surely qualifies.  Their history is one of rock’s saddest, especially because they created some brilliant music.  Here’s one of my favorites, their second big hit, “No Matter What”.

Amazingly enough, “the hierarchy at Apple reportedly was not inclined to release it in any format.”  Go figure.
