Unleash the hounds!

For those of you fretting about free agency, remember — it’s what’s on the front of the jersey that counts, right?

Crean just upgraded significantly through the portal. We had 4 under-achievers out and 4 over-achievers transfer in.

I’d bet the house that Kirby and Nick will similarly improve their rosters this way.

What is the answer for Men’s Basketball? The highwater mark seems to be Tubby’s time here in Athens and every hire since has failed for some reason or another no matter if they were established names. up and coming guys or familiar with the program.

        • Its a tough cookie. We are still hated over the past with the AAU, making recruiting more challenging. And there has been a lack of aggressiveness from our ADs – Fox was a good hire, but held onto for 3 years too long, and Crean was a good hire, but he should be on notice right now, heck, could even be fired right now. But basketball is like 75% recruiting i feel like, and natural talent. Its really on the player to put it through the hoop if you will, and a lot of the game is 1 on 1s at the point of attack. I think getting Anthony Edwards was a mistake – he was clearly not staying 2 years, became a focal point while making a lot of mistakes, then left. Bad on Crean – but then if he didnt get him, people would say Crean cant get recruits. lol

Agree about the continuing issues with Atlanta AAU coaches.
Disagree that signing and getting 1 season out of the NBA number 1 draft pick hurts.

Disagree that Edwards was a mistake. Crean should have been able to use him better, and it also should have lead to other top recruits, but he seems to have missed on both accounts.

I like Crean but I think he’s got one more year. Better win next year or we’ll be doing it again. I want a competitive UGA team and there’s no reason we can’t be.

Hugh went to the postseason 12 out of 17 seasons…this with a UGA team that had been to ZERO postseason tournaments….I say he was better than Tubby.

I will give him his due. I only vaguely remember that 1990 team so I was using my memory of the teams in 1996-1997 as the high water mark for the program. I stand corrected.

I hope you’re right but I’m not convinced. He obviously had to bring some bodies in and the guy from VA is an upgrade. I do think Crean has to win next season or he’ll be outta here.

  3. I heard something last night on XM ESPNU channel that says that very few athletes who enter the portal are getting picked up by other schools. This will definitely be interesting to monitor going forward.

So does this mean that UGA is no longer a toxic environment?

Initially there be some mistakes and horror stories but things will settled down. The super stars will be fine but the middle of the road players had better tread carefully. Bad advice will lead to lost scholarships and playing opportunities. Young QBs are not willing to wait now–what will total freedom bring.

The THING the NCCA needs to address is the backlog of scholarships. Seniors can back and not count against the 85 limit in football, basketball 13, baseball 11.7, softball 12, gymnastics 12, golf 6, soccer 14, volleyball 12, swimming and diving 14, tennis 8, equestrian 14. Did. I miss any ? There’s a bunch of kids busting there humps on 1/4, 1/3, 1/2 scholarships and although you have one pick em’ your a fan of such as football, with a limit of 85 kids a year there is at least 20 walk on holding dummy’s, practicing for nothing. With all the flow of revenue flowing s into the AD’s, Coaches and staff support even with non revenue sports you wanna be a walk on in cross country and pay your own way.
The log jam occurs with simple math you can sign up to 25 football scholarships a year with a max of 85. Now incoming freshmen are freshman with last year’s freshman. It’s not hard to see coach’s showing kids their way to meet the limit. When the NCCA could expand numbers to give kids a chance. Dawgs baseball usually has 27-28 players in the dugout. How would you like to be the lucky bb player on .7 scholarship. If they are gonna do NIL then cut the scholarships loose and give all teams a basic fair number of scholarships. Would quality of play be enhanced, perhaps ? Would UGA Athletic Department go belly up. No, that scholarship monies is on paper only not in cash $$$. Sending your kid to UGA along with athletic fee fees pay a large cost of scholarships. There is still amateur sports it’s the walk ons and 1/4 scholarship kids busting there hump and sometimes never dress out or travel. Travel squads are cut to 70, with exceptions made for bowl or playoff games. Actually the number of boosters that travel with the team out numbers the team. Just sayin.’

  9. What we really need to watch is Mullen in the post-game on-field scrums. Sumbitch will be recruiting the other team after every game. #portalmaster
