Your G-Day game thread

And there was much rejoicing.

One last “things to watch for at G-Day” link, this one, with what probably will be the most watched aspect of today’s scrimmage, from Jake Rowe:

Quarterbacks and banged-up receivers: When this whole thing got started back in mid March, we all expected JT Daniels to be throwing to the same guys he threw to in his four starts to end last season. That won’t be the case. George Pickens is out. Jermaine Burton is questionable at best. Arian Smith should be good to go with Kearis Jackson and Demetris Robertson presumably fully healthy.

There’s a good chance Daniels is going to complete a pass or two to a guy we haven’t seen him throw to very much in a real game. Whether it’s with Daniels and the first team or with the other quarterbacks, there’ll be plenty of opportunities for receivers that we haven’t seen play in a real game. Guys like Ladd McConkey, Adonai Mitchell, and Jackson Meeks are going to get a chance to show what they can do. Justin Robinson might have that opportunity but he’s dealing with an achilles/ankle injury.

It’ll also be a chance to see Carson Beck and Brock Vandagriff in action for the first time. Beck has turned in a strong spring and will get his first action at UGA in front of fans. Vandagriff, a freshman early enrollee, has been impressive at times and it’ll be a feet-wetting experience for him.

I’ll be there, after consuming beer and fried chicken (for medicinal purposes only, you understand).  I may even try to tweet a few things as I see them unfold.  In the meantime, feel free to add observations of your own in the comments.

Post game: Covering 0 won’t be a fun thing for dbs this year…after he catches the ball, then the fun begins! Mitchell was impressive and Jackson and Robinson were also…the veterans! Beck and Vandergriff looked good and I won’t worry about backup at QB…Bennett was a cool, competent #2 and we won’t worry about Daniels coming out for a rest. DBs were about what I expected at this point…Cine looked cool on the interception. Lines on both sides appeared competent and defense will come thru big time! Don’t know about Clemson but I feel like the Dawgs will own the rest of the schedule. GATA!!!

I keep my home bar pretty simple. Makers Mark for my bourbon. Auchentoshan for my scotch. Captain Morgans for my rum. Bombay Sapphire for my gin. 1800 or Patron for my tequila. Titos for my vodka. Add in a bottle of Kahlua, Grand Marnier, Vermouth, and Bitters, and I’m golden. If you always have fresh citrus in the fridge and a bottle of real maraschino cherries, there’s not many drinks you can’t make.

I get the KISS policy (you’re a Marine and know what I’m talking aboot) and I’m a big Five Bourbons movement(mixer, daily, weekly, monthly, impress the company) but by five it turns into ten (because two is one and one is none) and it gets crazy. Then you need a scotch, then a peaty scotch, then an Irish, then a finished spirit. Next thing you know, the wives want Vodka drinks. Then somebody wants to front and demand some Gin (cue Oasis Supersonic). Then the globe bar from old school James Bond movies can’t hold all the bottles, so you got to build a wall. It’s the life we chose, lol

That’s’s why you keep it simple, man. There’s absolutely no reason to have five bourbons, let alone ten. Makers Mark is smooth enough to drink straight, and yet not so expensive that you feel like an asshole if you mix it into a cocktail. For $35 I get exactly what I need from one bourbon instead of spending $20 on Jim Beam for mixing and $50+ on Woodford for sipping. That’s half the money, man.

And you can keep your scotches that taste like burnt wood and dirt. I’ll take my lowland Auchentoshan which is super-smooth any day of the week.

The one bottle I’m missing right now is Jamesons, I’ll give you that.

Everything else, I’m good. And while I’m not the biggest gin guy, I nice Tom Collins made with fresh lemonade hits the spot on a hot summer day.

After New Year 2003 in Jamaica we went to the Cockpit Country for Maroon Christmas. Et some dirt road jerk chicken with a bit of heat and a lot of flavor and then went in the one bar for a Red Stripe. The locals tried playing games with their 180 Proof Appleton rum. Yeah, I bit. Had a few shots and made them quit first so they had to pay the tab. It was smooth considering it was 90% alcohol.
Later that day I was interviewed by the Jamaican version of 60 Minutes wearing my Georgia hat and a big smile. We were some of the first outsiders welcomed to Accompong.

Can’t knock your choice of bourbon…I just go with Buffalo Trace along with ur MM and a good half dozen others…there’s so many good ones out there. However, prefer Absolute or Gray Goose for vodka, ur tequilas are fine, ur rum sucks…Bacardi all the way in Golden, 151, and regular…no gin under any circustances..bad memories of tours in Greece and Nam…ur backup liquers are fine, need Bushmills or Jameson for Irish, McCallan for Scotch or Glen Livit, Glen Morangie are fine, too. Calvados, Couvoisier, Metaxas and a good rye…Wild Turkey’s or Overholt will do. No loud music, my comfortable chair, a warm fire, and one of the good tenors singing the aria Nessun Dorme….or Willie, Waylon, or Vince….and the Dawgs on TV.

I usually have Jamesons, but I’ve been out for awhile. I do need to make a trip to Total Wine soon. I’m out of my favorite Italian Red… it’s Montepulcciano that is without a doubt the most delicious table wine I’ve ever had. So good.

But seriously, I know even some very experienced drinkers who hate single malt scotch because of the aforementioned generalization that comes from the Highland scotches like McCallans that they taste of burnt wood and dirt because of so much peat… Auchentoshan is actually triple distilled lowland scotch made in a way that’s similar to Irish and American whiskeys, and it’s very good. I like the the bottle that’s aged in bourbon barrels. It’s smooth as all get out, with these caramel and orange notes. Look for it the next time you’re at Total Wine or wherever.

Here’s some other news after a relatively blah G-Day Game:

Chuck Dowdle is calling it quits. Apparently his daughter is getting married the same weekend as the Kentucky game (she’s obviously not a Dawg or sports fan) and he thought it would be a good time to semi-retire since he’s also going to be 72 years old.

Also, he’s moving to Maine full time, so, I guess he’s not only tired of Atlanta summers and early falls, but he likes freezing his ass off in the winter?

    Thoughts on G-Day:

Matt Luke will have a chance to earn every penny of his paycheck between now and the first game of the season, because our o-line is easily the worst position group on the field. You’d think coming into the season it’d be the corners. Nope.

Beck and BVG are not likely unseat Bennett this season as QB2 unless they put in a shit-ton of work the next few months.

D-Rob looked good, and if Monken puts him in the slot he could actually do a lot of damage.

There is no way in hell Fitzpatrick should be starting over Washington right now, and yet he is.

I know this is G-Day, I know the offense is vanilla… but why even with Monken does our offense look so start-and-stop, herky-jerky, with a lot of short passes and shit? You look at highlights from Bama’s A-Day and they have guys running open downfield all day. ALL DAY. Why can’t we do more of that? What was up with all the bunch formation shit? Spread the damn field, sideline to sideline.

We need to see way more James Cook on the wheel route and way less of James Cook trying to run between the tackles this year.

The defense is going to be really good, y’all. Wyatt and Davis are fucking monsters in the middle. Our defensive line will make our secondary looks so much better. You add in Smith at the Star, and our corners will not be a weakness. Cine and Smith are patrolling the middle of the secondary like bosses.

No more need to see Camarda kick FGs. Today was enough.

Do you really think teams for this are set up as 1s vs 2s? Kirby didn’t call me and ask how I would set things up, but I would be trying to challenge some people. Seems to me putting 0 up against some defenders might be a good way to judge the best. Regardless, I just don’t think you can make any assumptions about starters based on G-Day rosters.
