Your 4.26.21 Playpen

I’ll keep this simple:  as much as I enjoy blogging, I hate policing the comments section.  It’s a lather, rinse, repeat experience.  Folks cross a line, I complain, announce steps in response, the guilty parties promise to turn over a new leaf, but are soon back to doing the same old things.  No matter what, some of y’all won’t change.  So, I give up.  It’s time to cull the herd.

Here on out, there are no more warnings.  No more time outs.  You cross a line — if there’s one thing I can confidently say, it’s that nobody has the excuse of not knowing where the lines are — and I will stop it permanently.  Whether that means closing a comment thread, deleting a particular comment, banning a particular commenter or some combination of those, that’s what’ll happen, depending on the moment.

It’s a shame that some who don’t respect the ground rules are the same people whose comments I most enjoy reading and engaging with, but I no longer care.  I’m not going to try to coax y’all to moderate your behavior.  Life’s too short.  If you want to discuss irrelevant topics or inflame others, my advice would be to find other forums to pursue those interests.  But that’s entirely up to you.  Until it isn’t, that is.

Also, the Playpen under its current format is finished.  It’s outlived its purpose of being a heat sink to keep comment threads on other posts clean, so there’s no reason to continue with it.  There will be some sort of Playpen going forward, if only because I get some good topic suggestions from readers via email, but staying on topic in the comments will be the rule there, too.

GTP is about Georgia football and college football.  (Not to mention the occasional Musical Palate Cleanser.)  That’s not to say outside matters like politics don’t sometimes enter into the discourse; I can’t discuss player compensation outside of politics, for example.  However, that’s not an invitation to show your ass about Biden, Trump, the VA, or any other subject you feel it’s important to get off your chest, regardless of the post topic.  Nor is this a place for personally insulting others who take the time to comment, just because they have the audacity to disagree with your world view.

And with that, back to regular posting again.

Good post Senator. But what about good natured ribbing and sarcasm. You have employed both. I assume that is still ok. Also there are no limits to the viciousness with which we can attack Fu, TN and AU is there?

Sometimes I don’t go to the comments, so I guess I missed whatever kerfuffle happened recently, but I was wondering why there hadn’t been any post and was hoping you (Senator) were ok.
Thanks for doing this site. I know it’s a labor of love, but sometime more labor than love.

Sure hope my comment on the VA wasn’t a trigger – I tried to keep it simple and to the point without ANY political point.
That being said I’m on board with your suggestions and look forward to discussing football – particularly Georgia football with some snark cast towards our yearly opponents.

“However, that’s not an invitation to show your ass about Biden, Trump, the VA, or any other subject you feel it’s important to get off your chest, regardless of the post topic”- Are you saying that these topics, if pretaining to sports, can be addressed without a display of ass? Not that mine is particularly appealing, or anything….

Can’t underestimate the small guy. Hunter Renfrow was another.

I didn’t see the comment that set off the alarm, and I definitely missed reading your takes the last couple of days with my coffee.

I try my best to only write a comment I would say to someone’s face.

Thanks, Senator. I know you don’t crave adulation, but like a lot of folks, this is the first web site I visit each day. And I think you do a bang up job of running it. And much like gotthepicture, I generally don’t dive into the 150+ comment threads because I know what those can be (though occasionally, I hit Control +F and search for “#FTMF” because THERE’S a subject where I have an opinion). To those farking up this thing, please keep it in your pants. You’re not changing anyone’s mind with hyperbole.

Having been a lurker and not posting for many years. The reason for not posting is dont like other sites where its OK to attack those who dont agree with your view or take. This for the most part due Im sure to great effort by our host this has been a safe place. Its still the only public form I post on.

The reality of possibly losing my favorite Blog is extremely sad and disappointing. Hopefully the new rules will again make this site as enjoyable for our host as for the many who look forward to starting there day seeing what’s new in the Dawgnation.. While safely engaging with other readers.

Last season I did not attend a game for the first time in almost 40 years. I truly enjoyed the gameday threads following and sharing the pain and joys of fellow posters.

Last season also proved I no longer need to attend cupcake games. I can have fun watching at home. I wonder how many other longtime donors and ticket holders feel the same way now.

Agreed on all four paragraphs, Scuubby, with the possible exception of number two. I don’t believe there are so many new rules. Just the Senator plans on enforcing the existing rules.
I’m good with that. But you know man, it doesn’t matter if I’m good with it or not. It ain’t my call. As long as this place continues as a clearinghouse for UGA football and averts my having to peruse vacuous and vapid sites such as Dawgnation (I do occasionally enjoy scanning the comments on SDS for free-range Corch scorch) then I’ll continue to check in.
I can babble and prattle on elsewhere. Thanks to GTP I’ve made a couple of new friends to replace my departed or radicalized former friends. They’ll apprise me if I become guilty of collaboration.
What I’m really looking forward to is sharing in the exultation that a successful season will bring to this cohort of dirty Dawg fans. It’s about damn time.

We all need to police our own comments and everybody needs a couple of days off. I wouldn’t feel the need to be petulant about it trying to avoid hurt feelings. I would’ve told you all to kiss my fuckn ass and started banning offenders starting with giving myself six months (props to Pigmeat Markham). It’s a gotdam Dawg blog for cripes sake. I think it’s okay as it’s football related with the one friend in particular. I’ve known him for thirty-five years as fellow COs. Never met him when we were both at UGA. He was green OCS type. I could live with him changing from a right-wing Baptofacist teetotaler to drinking Newcastle and listening to Lucinda Williams as a result of his working in NW Florida for a few months. I even put up with him becoming pro-Obama and bad mouthing President Trump ( though he doesn’t smoke dope and listen to Mick Jagger). But when he started in on all that, “If Kirby doesn’t win it all this year he needs to be fired” shit? That was too much. He won’t shut up about about it. Tried getting him on here to debate with more knowledgeable folks. Nope. He’s convinced that since he was correct about the Richt firing that he’s the authority on coaching changes.
“Kirby should’ve been fired when he didn’t win it all in his second year.”
Hell, he might be right. Just shut the fuck up about it already.
Another friend said, “The Dawgs suck!” one time too many(twice). He was warned. He became deranged after W won a second time. Had enough of his raving during the Game, so he ain’t missed.
Phil and Big Steve retired and moved away. Doug stroked out screaming about Grantham in ’13.
Shiiiit man, I invented social distancing before the pandemic but not before Mr Tom McGoo.

      • This is your show, and I am a guest, but let me say that I agree with some others on here that this entire episode recently seems a bit overblown. Comments got out of hand? No shit. What do you expect when you keep persistently posting hot topics like “The Eyes of Texas?” That is a highly controversial story that is mostly forgotten in the mainstream media, but has appeared here every week for some time – and it really doesn’t have a whole lot to do with Football – TBH. Yeah, people are gonna chime in on stuff like that, and it might get ugly. Your fault in other words. Play with fire, you might get burned. Anyway, I have various theories on that other issue of the name caller.

Losing control over sensitive topics is totally understandable, expected and is the fault of the guy who chooses the topic.

Losing control over post made in response to that chosen topic, is an entirely different matter.

At least its an ethos dude.

I never have read the Play Pen because I knew it was going to go off the rails. The other problem is that most people generally want the last word on whatever topic is being discussed and that just causes a dialog between the two or three people arguing (boring to the rest of us). Great to have you back I thought you had retired with no notice.
