I didn’t send you an email to have this as a topic, but I do think it’s hilarious that the underhanded street agent asshole Quincy Avery just cost Jamie Newman millions and millions of dollars, and he refuses to take responsibility for his terrible advice.

This is the same underhanded street agent asshole who interjected himself into the Fields situation, too. In a just world, impressionable kids and their idiot parents would avoid him after what happened to Jamie Newman.

I expected the Falcons to draft Newman. Given their history of bypassing Dawgs I thought that would be the ultimate irony.

When you know so much about both of them, why keep it to yourself?

Can anyone share the video of Fields and his longtime life partner Sasser celebrating his being selected by the bears?

The truth about Newman is that what cost him wasn’t sitting out. It was not doing well in work outs and at the senior bowl. He either was never all that or he didn’t put in the work.

There were at least three opt outs drafted in the first round. So opting out wasn’t the issue.

Barring injury, him playing couldn’t have hurt his chances to be drafted. He went undrafted! That is like me entering the draft. He literally got drafted EXACTLY like I would have.

Yes, but you didn’t sign an undrafted free agent contract this weekend that pays you like $50k. On the other hand, you don’t have to work out 24-7 for the next 3-4 months, then get your body pounded on for a couple of weeks by big dudes all day, and then hold a clipboard for 3 or 4 weeks, before having to go back to/start your real job….

  5. Does anyone know the real story about why Newman elected to opt out? No doubt it was a terrible decision by a young man educated at one of America’s finest institutions of higher learning, Wake Forest (don’t take that as bashing Wake – it is a great school). He created really no buzz at the Senior Bowl which was as close to a combine as there was. Unless Mathis was beating him out in camp, there was really no reason for him to leave and give up a season of learning with Monken unless an agent through Avery was whispering in his ear.

Thanks for leaving us high and dry 2 weeks before the season’s start, Jamie. Avery, I hope a ton of your students decide to tell you I’m better off learning from my high school coach than I am with you.

The real story? No, I doubt anyone but Jamie and his family knows the “real story”. But a betting man would say Avery gave him some really poor advice.

My issue is he got two weeks into Fall camp and decided to quit. You want to “opt out”, then do it before practice begins so you aren’t leaving your coaches scrambling to cover your ass.

      • Ja’Marr Chase officially opted out on September 1, 2020. Jamie Newman announced on September 2.

I don’t think Chase opted out because he wasn’t going to be a starter. I don’t Newman did either.

Both of them decided to cash in early with an agent … more power to them. It worked out for Chase … Newman not so much.

Yeah… I noticed two trends that really bothered me over the weekend. Those that wanted to try and poke holes in Bama’s success in the draft this year and those that took absolute glee with Newman not getting drafted. Both struck me as weak and shallow. I know some of it is the culture of the day; but classless is classless and that’s the way both came across.

I was going to reply on the other thread talking about this, but I’ll drop it here instead.

From the Senator: “Don’t understand the antipathy he’s being shown by UGA fans.”

While I don’t feel any animosity towards the kid – I think I understand the reasoning behind those that do. The more cynical nature of some people drives them to A) not take him at his word that his opt out was bc of Covid and B) feel like he used our program to raise his stature, while then leaving the team screwed and without a starting QB at the alter.

While we should take Newman at his word that he was worried about COVID in an unprecedented time, hindsight that the season was played and our QB’s struggled seems to be getting the better of some folks.

Side note – Pissing off a guy like Quincy Avery – whatever your feelings about him – is probably a dumb move by our fanbase. Especially since my twitter feed indicates he’s a pretty sensitive person (Calling all UGA fans idiots for instance) Future recruits are far more likely to remember him standing next to Trey Lance at the draft than that he was involved with a former Wake Forest QB that opted out and went undrafted.

I think former UGA great Terrance Edwards said it best
“I need someone to explain something to me. Why do “some” fans take things so personally when it comes to the team they cheer for? I love my
@GeorgiaFootball but nothing that happens to them as a team will affect my day negatively or positively. I yell at the tv and keep it moving”

    Well said sir.

To be angry you have to simultaneously believe that had he played that we do big things in 2020 and also that through seven rounds no nfl team noticed that potential. Its pretty incongruent.

      Liked by 1 person

    • Sorry, but if it was the pandemic that drove the decision 2 weeks before the season, he still made a bad decision because he was likely a late round selection if he had gone to the NFL directly from Wake. Lance arguably was a first round pick before the season started. NDSU had their season moved to the spring, so it’s a no brainer that he opted out.

As for Avery, this is the 2nd time he has screwed UGA. For a guy who lives and works in Atlanta, it’s not typically good business to alienate the people who live around you. He had to have been involved in the Fields situation with anOSU (a school Fields didn’t even consider out of high school).

      Liked by 2 people

      • Re: Avery…..the problem there is that he doesn’t claim to care about the schools. He sells himself on helping the individuals. The schools aren’t his clients so to speak.

And while screwed the pooch with Newman, he can still trade on Fields’ name does a while, and even more so if he succeeds in Chicago.

The best thing to do is to largely ignore him and make the pitch to kids that UGA as more resources, more structure, more connections, more examples of success in doing right by their players than he does.

Don’t fight with him, don’t get in bed with him, acknowledge he exists, but just go on minding your own business.

Which is frankly exactly what I expect Kirby and Co. to do.

The point is not that Lance was already a high draft pick, or that he opted out. He is just a filler for the argument that Avery works with very high profile quarterbacks. A HighSchool recruit is going to google QA and see him standing at the draft with a #3 pick – not a blog post of someone saying “QA Screwed Jaime Newman’s chances of being drafted with bad advice!”

As for your second point I don’t really care about the past, my only concern would be he steer future guys away from UGA.

What does that have to do with anything I said? I said maybe moving forward Kirby’s plan is to avoid the kind of kid and parents who put their trust in this underhanded asshole street agent.

Fool Kirby once, shame on you. Fool Kirby twice, shame on him. This is twice now that Avery has fucked Kirby over with a QB. Why in the hell would he go back to that well again?

Avery isn’t involved with every single QB out there. So avoid the ones he involved himself with, and recruit the ones smart enough to stay away from him.

You think that just bc the player has someone in his ear telling him he’s better than everyone is going to steer him away? Every freaking uncle in the world was/is already doing that.

If Kirby backs off of a kid, it’s because of fit, or character, or grades, or whatever. I feel certain it won’t be because of who is personal coach is.

Terrance doesn’t live vicariously through the players like some fans do. Those fans are the same type that bitch at coaches for not playing or developing kids in little league. The same type of fans that boo a team walking to the locker room at the half for not lighting up the scoreboard against UK in a fucking monsoon. I was frustrated too and would have choked Coley out if I could have gotten to him. I wouldn’t boo the players though. They owe me nothing.

  9. Eh, we’ll probably never know. If reports that Newman went completely AWOL last spring with no notice, no contact, no nothing, thus leading Kirby to seek out JT, then I think it’s fair to say his head just wasn’t in it.

I also doubt he knew what he was getting into with regards to the pressure cooker of UGA practices. Throw in no time with Monken except via Zoom, and it’s all just a weird situation.

Ultimately, Fromm made a bad decision, then Newman made a bad decision, then the coaches made a bad decision with Mathis (tbf, they recognized it immediately and course corrected in record time).

It was just a messy deal.

Look, I think the timing was shitty, but my point is we have absolutely zero clue what was going on with him at the time. Zero. Maybe he truly didn’t like Athens or wasn’t feeling Kirby and dipped. Maybe an agent got in his ear, fronted him some money and he dipped. Maybe he was in a desperate situation and needed money and help right away and leaving made the most sense.

All of those are equally as probable to me, and sense I don’t know, I’m not going to shit on the kid. Actions have consequences, and he is certainly paying for his. That’s enough for me right now, especially since I have a feeling that some more is about to leak out.

Possibly your tolerance for quitters is higher than mine. Every quitter I ever talked to had somehow justified letting his buddies down. Usually he was just weak minded. Occasionally the excoriation of a quitter is a terrible mistake from a failure to communicate. For instance the Jump into Panama when one Sergeant thought he heard another say, “I quit” and began to pummel the guy and then unhook him from the static line. The reality was he said, “I’m hit” from AA fire. That’s why he took the ass beating so meekly.
The point being some cultures have a low tolerance for quitters as that individual jeopardizes the group and their goals. Whatever excuse Newman had for quitting doesn’t change the fact that he fucked his buddies. You can go on and make excuses for him if you’d like. But I won’t. I won’t kick him while he’s down either. I will say again, piss on Newman. The quitter.

                B) people quit jobs every day for a better opportunity. Coaches leave all the time and no one calls them quitters. Andrew Luck retired literally hours before a game.

I’m not making excuses for anyone, in fact I specifically said he’s suffering the consequences of his actions. But you don’t have the first fucking clue as to what was going on at the time and the reason as to why he made the decision he did. And playing Tommy Tough Guy about a kid who already obtained a degree from another institution who chose to make a decision which he has to live with the consequences of doesn’t make you sound hard or rugged.

As discussed in a different blog post, if you can’t understand the difference in quitting on a team in the middle of Fall Practice two weeks before the first game and in losing your job due to injury through no fault of your own and then leaving to be given a chance to compete for the starting job (USC named Slovis as their 2020 starter, no competition), then I have nothing for you.

That analogy is crap. No one denigrates Franks for leaving Florida or Hurts for leaving Bama. It’s hilarious how some people always ignore inconvenient context when trying to buck up a bad argument.

There wasn’t another player in the first round who wouldn’t have had their draft status negatively impacted by the decision not to play … yes, that includes Ja’Marr Chase (who I don’t believe is a Julio Jones/AJ Green type of player).
