Today, in (preseason) talk is cheap

Barrett Sallee includes this nugget on his list of post-spring overreactions for each SEC team:

Florida: Third-and-Grantham is a thing of the past

Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has been a lightning rod for criticism after a lackluster season in 2020. That has changed … at least according to head coach Dan Mullen. It’s nearly impossible to have a steadfast opinion on Florida’s spring due to the lack of spring game and access. But Mullen touted Grantham’s defense after every scrimmage, which is music to the ears of Florida fans. If that translates to the fall, then look out, SEC East.

And what song will Mullen be singing after the 2021 season is over, I wonder.

If Mullen says it, it must be true.

Lack of access and no spring game so we just take Mullen’s word for it?

Nah. I’ll stick with his total body of work.

  3. With JT at QB, we would have lit up that Handbag defense.

  5. Because Third-and-Grantham can be exorcised like a demon in the spring so it doesn’t make an appearance in the fall?

I thought Sallee went to Auburn, not Florida…

Read the entire column. It’s about Spring Practice Overreactions.

He reports on the happy talk from every SEC team.

Towel boy has to much history that will over ride any happy talk coming from the FU hc, when it’s 3rd and long…you know what’s on the way…

  6. Coach Sallee was also convinced that Mathis was the best QB on UGA’s roster last August.

So maybe we can just ignore him.

I think this is saying a lot more about the “new offense” at Florida

Maybe they can return to the heady days of 2019 when they ranked 40th nationally on third down conversion rate (their best since Mullen got there).

So after 54 years the lightbulb finally came on and he changed?? I don’t think so. Just like the parable of the scorpion and the frog, it is just in Todd’s nature to 3rd and Grantham and that is never going to change. (MORAL OF THE SCORPION AND THE FROG. SOME PEOPLE CAN’T OVERCOME THEIR NATURE, EVEN WHEN IT WORKS AGAINST THEIR INTERESTS.)

So wait, all you have to do is say that it’s over and it’s over?

Several that he listed were not over reactions, but just plain old facts
Auburn: Bo Nix + average receivers = disaster
South Carolina: Luke Doty needs some help

Others were more like a page out of the Onion. They were hard to read and keep a straight face as the went from over reaction into probably satire?
Tennessee: Vols have the best QB situation in the SEC

OK, that Tennessee bit was good enough for me to actually click the article and read. His justification there is that Hendon Hooker and Harrison Bailey both looked “pretty darn good” in UT’s scrimmage. Also, some kid I’ve never heard of from Michigan is transferring in.

Welp, guess we’re screwed, folks. LOL

Dude… this is not Barrett Sallee’s opinion of what Tennessee is this year… this is his reporting of the happy talk from coaches and fans… what he very clearly says are the OVERREACTIONS to Spring Practice.

It’s not like he was subtle about it, it’s right in the title.

I’m just embarrassed for so many of y’all right now. Did y’all not have any coffee this morning or something???

Well Jdawg, as the great Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens is fond of saying:

“You run into an asshole in the morning, you ran into an asshole. You run into assholes all day? You’re the asshole.”

Dude, it was a joke about reading comprehension. Perhaps it missed. I appreciate your in depth novel on the subject.

Well, if you liken a single paragraph to an in-depth novel, you really do have problems.

                  I’ll leave you to them.

Over reactions are made to be ridiculed and laughed at, otherwise why bother to point them out. Some are just more hilarious than others and deserve additional ridicule.

Yes they are. Which is partially what Sallee is doing.

What doesn’t make a lick of sense is trying to clown on Sallee here, as it just is a burn on yourself for not being able to read.

I’ve only seen a couple of people on here that took a shot personally at Sallee. Lots of us making fun of the over reactions or in some cases shaking our heads at the absurdities that he pointed out. Some fan bases are pie in the sky optimistic. Some are unfortunately so spot on and so Debbie Downer that if that is your team (ex SC and Auburn), you need to start drinking heavily BEFORE the season even starts

  14. I like how he stated his overreaction to UGA’s offense isn’t really an overreaction. I hope Grandthumb keeps choking and stays at FU forever…I also hope that Barrette is right about the Dawg’s prolific offense and JT and Monken dissect defenses all season long…that would be a glorious thing.

Logical next step is for Mullen to put CTG up for a raise and contract extension. Heck, I’ll write a recommendation letter.

Guess I missed that UF didn’t have a spring game. Based on UF’s performance without Pitts and the bevy of receivers in the bowl game, the defense should absolutely have looked lights out all spring in practice.

The sound of silence…after the clock hits zero in Jax and we’ve locked up the East…that and the sound of Grantham’s car radio driving north on I-75 Tuscaloosa to start his 1st day on the job as little Nicky’s car waxer & shoe shiner.
