Five guys walk into a town…

Good piece from Seth Emerson ($$) today about how Georgia’s last five head football coaches still call Athens their home.  (At least a couple of ’em presumably call Michael Adams something else.)  Here’s the part I found a little intriguing:

They don’t get together for breakfast or anything. Two of them – Richt and Smart – do text and call each other sometimes. Two of them – Donnan and Dooley – have had lunch on occasion.

Fly on the wall, and all that.

  1. Based on your header, I thought this was going to be about burgers.

I admire Jim Donnan for not having a chip on the shoulder, which would be justified.
FYI when Donnan was QB at NC State mid 60’s, he was cutting edge wearing (wait for it) white shoes! And, of course, beat Georgia in the Liberty Bowl.

ACC Player of the year isn’t too shabby. Also played tennis at NCST and I thought I remembered, a Yo-Yo aficionado!

Played alot with Coach Magill as well as NCst, had a funny moment with Coach Donnan at a North Ga. Bulldog Club meeting his first year talking over BBQ and the shirt i was wearing….went straight into the liberty bowl and his tennis days with him getting a ride from some members of the UGA tennis team at a juniors event he played in when his mother was late picking him up….

  4. The fact that every one of those guys says “we” when he talks about Georgia football is a testament to how that place gets into your blood and never leaves. How every one of them has a relationship with Kirby is also pretty damn cool.

I remember JD speaking at an Atlanta BD club gathering one summer after his firing. The first time he said We referring to the football team he stopped and asked I hope that was OK? He was given a very loud round of applause. It was easy to tell he was very happy and proud to be a Georgia Bulldawg.

As for Micheal Adams it can never be said enough FTMF!

Honestly over the years I’ve run into all of them here are one time or another. It’s a town where people mostly leave you alone if you have notoriety. Had Dooley in front of me recently running off landscape layouts at fedex. He is just a sweet little fella now. The people there you can tell love the guy. Must be in there all the time.

Kind of interesting that “Ray Goof” is the odd man out.

I know this is popular, but Goff is a damn good dawg, who was a little in over his head as head coach.

Damn right. He will always be a DGD to me. 21-0 over Bama in 1976 should be enough that he never has to buy a drink in Athens.

That game is probably the most awesome memory of my entire life. ( don’t tell my wife and kids). Ray sure as hell won’t have to buy a drink if I am at the bar.

Watching him lead us back from down 14 at the half v FL to a 14 point win in the 76 game (4th and dumb) was a highlight. I didn’t exactly know RG, but I had friends who did; everyone raved about what a good dude he was. He is 100% a DGD.

We should all strive to attain Coach Goff’s humility. DGD too

In the mid 90s I was a teenager working on a golf course in south GA where Goff and other coaches were playing in a charity tournament one summer. After the round I remember sitting on the club porch in rocking chairs with him and other guys talking football. One of the highlights of my childhood. He was well respected and fascinating to listen to.

As I remember it, check my handle, his south Georgia friends pushed his candidacy. They had to have him. He simply wasn’t ready for the big chair.

Why insult Ray..? Damn Good Dawg in my book.

    • Ray is a DGD for what he did between the white lines in the 70s. He also brought the offense into the modern era when he brought Wayne McDuffie to Athens. Eric Zeier and Andre Hastings never come to Athens if George Haffner had still been on the sidelines. He inherited a program that had an emptying cupboard, rebuilt the roster and brought us 5 points from a berth in the first SEC championship game. Who knows what happens in 1995 if Bobo and Edwards both didn’t have season ending injuries?

There’s a reason he’ll always be One Play Away Ray as a head coach.

Nice to read that Richt and Kirby are on what appears to be good terms.

    • They appear to be on very good terms. Richt wanted him to come home to replace Two Thumbs and also hired him to be a RB coach who had literally no experience playing or coaching offense. Kirby gives Richt a lot of credit for building the program amd giving him a chance.

I hope he does. All the shade he’s thrown at UGA over the years, he deserves a solid booing every time he goes out. His traitor ass can retire to Gainesville.

If my wife hadn’t been a Florida girl I would have loved to retire in Athens. As an Alumnus I understand you can actually audit some classes etc.

I was gifted one of Coach Dooley’s hydrangeas via Babs to my wife. Deer ate it even with hog wire protection. Bastages.

Off topic, but dang y’all, does the FCS championship move the needle at all? Not for me. I am just UGA, and then SEC, and then who wins the battle at the end. It’s a damn fun ride but the spring FCS stuff never caught my ear. Probably “hedge” on the senator’s radar”.. this is our world.

Nice. Hope the Devon graduates and then works for the university for 30 years in any capacity. Then retires and lives a great life in retirement. He deserves it and so does our university.
